Hulk Has Inbred Cannibal Babies in "Old Man Logan"

Hulk Has Inbred Cannibal Babies in "Old Man Logan"

    [ranking: 1]
Old Man Logan is considered by fans to be one of the best alternate future storylines, and it serves as the inspiration to 2017??s movie Logan. Much of what is seen in the dystopian world of Old Man Logan is dark and disturbing, but nothing beats what has become of the Incredible Hulk.
In a world ruled by villains, with most of the heroes long since dead, the Hulk has broken bad, forcibly married his cousin, She-Hulk, and sired a number of inbred, hillbilly Hulklings. These little monsters wreak havoc on those around them, including Logan, and even stoop to cannibalism.

Spider-Man's Radioactive Sperm Killed Mary Jane In "Spider-Man: Reign"

Spider-Man's Radioactive Sperm Killed Mary Jane In "Spider-Man: Reign"

    [ranking: 2]
Few comic book romances are as beloved as that of Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson. The gorgeous redhead was the webslinger??s rock for several decades, sending him off to battle the evils of the world with a ??Go get ??em, tiger!?? and dutifully waiting for his return. M.J. put up with her husband??s constant disappearances and frequent brushes with death, but one thing she probably didn??t bargain for was radioactive sperm.
That??s what she gets in Spider-Man: Reign, a classic miniseries that depicts an aging and broken Peter Parker. One of the reasons he is so messed up is that, unbeknownst to him, his own semen had been irradiating M.J. all those years, and eventually killed her. That??s a pretty on-the-nose metaphor for a destructive relationship.

Deadpool Ate Himself In "Messiah War"

Deadpool Ate Himself In "Messiah War"

    [ranking: 3]
The major X-crossover Messiah War saw Cable and a version of X-Force head several years into the future to stop a Sentinel-related plot. Along the way, they opened up a storage facility and found a centuries-old Deadpool inside of it.
This Deadpool was now considerably more crazy after only having himself as company for the better part of a century. He had subsisted on eating his own flesh, which would always grow back due to his healing factor. No word on what he drank, although you likely have some unpleasant guesses.

Martian Manhunter Serves As Fuel In "Rock Of Ages"

Martian Manhunter Serves As Fuel In "Rock Of Ages"

    [ranking: 4]
As far as crossovers go, one with a title like Rock of Ages sounds like a good time. However, this major Justice League event was anything but fun for the heroes of Earth. The series featured Darkseid making one of his most serious runs at taking over the planet, killing many of his defenders along the way.
The cruelest fate was left for the Martian Manhunter, who is notable for his famous aversion to fire. Of course, this inspired Darkseid to use him as fuel in his gigantic, destructive boiler, literally burning J??onn J??onzz away one molecule at a time.

Namor Is Constantly Half On Fire In "Earth X"

Namor Is Constantly Half On Fire In "Earth X"

    [ranking: 5]
In Earth X, Namor has an especially unpleasant future. The proud prince of the seas is revealed to have teamed up with Doctor Doom in the past, in a plot that left both the Human Torch and the Invisible Woman dead. This enraged young Franklin Richards, who used his near-omnipotent powers to punish Namor.
Richards made it so that exactly half of Namor's body was on fire at all times. This was an incredibly specific way to keep Namor in the ocean at all times, and it left the vain royal horribly scarred.

Cable Became A Puddle In "Earth X"

Cable Became A Puddle In "Earth X"

    [ranking: 6]
Countless heroes meet gruesome fates in the future-gazing series Earth X. Other than the characters that are outright dead, one of the worst set of circumstances belongs to Cable. He is discovered hidden far from human civilization, with his techno-organic virus having taken complete control and reducing his body to an immobile, metallic puddle.
Not a very dignified end for the son of Cyclops.

Bruce Wayne Impregnated Batgirl In "Batman Beyond"

Bruce Wayne Impregnated Batgirl In "Batman Beyond"

    [ranking: 7]
Terry McGinnis, better known as Batman Beyond, might just be the most successful futuristic legacy hero of all. Terry uses all sorts of future Waynetech to do what the Batman used to do and then taking things, well, beyond. However, that doesn??t mean that Bruce Wayne is out of the picture. Wayne still figures heavily into the series, as an aged and retired mentor of his young successor.
The original Robin, Dick Grayson, is also around, but he and Bruce are not on speaking terms. It is later revealed that this is because Bruce had impregnated Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl and the daughter of his good friend Jim Gordon, while she had been dating his young sidekick, Dick. Beware the Batman indeed.

Captain America Turns Into A HYDRA Overlord In "Civil War II"

Captain America Turns Into A HYDRA Overlord In "Civil War II"

    [ranking: 8]
In Marvel's crossover event Civil War II, the Inhuman Ulysses gained the ability to not only see the future, but to share his visions with others as well. This led to all sorts of superheroic drama, but one premonition was particularly chilling.
Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America and recently revealed to be a HYDRA agent after some reality meddling, foresaw a future not far off in which HYDRA had taken complete control of America.

Superman Is A Full-Blown Tyrant In "Injustice"

Superman Is A Full-Blown Tyrant In "Injustice"

    [ranking: 9]
Injustice, based on the popular video game of the same name, features a despotic Superman determined to eliminate crime and human suffering worldwide, at any cost. This Superman has been ruling Earth with a steel fist for five years, and slips further and further into tyranny as he kills countless former allies.

Beast Became A Mad Scientist In "The Age Of Apocalypse"

Beast Became A Mad Scientist In "The Age Of Apocalypse"

    [ranking: 10]
When Legion traveled back in time and accidentally killed his father, Professor X, the result was the massively successful Age of Apocalypse crossover. This grim version of the future saw the villain Apocalypse rising unimpeded without the X-Men around to stop him. Twisted versions of most mutants appeared in the series, but no character was more changed than Hank McCoy.
The normally effervescent and eloquent Beast was transformed into Dark Beast, an ethically-impaired genetic scientist in the mold of Josef Mengele. Even his familiar blue coat was rendered a sinister gray instead.

Vision Is Cut In Half And Stuck In A Server In "Age Of Ultron"

Vision Is Cut In Half And Stuck In A Server In "Age Of Ultron"

    [ranking: 11]
The film adaptation of Age of Ultron borrowed almost nothing from the comic book except for the name. The printed version featured a future where Ultron had taken over almost completely, leaving several heroes dead and the rest on the run as underground fugitives.
A few of the remaining good guys mount a mission to assault Ultron??s central facility, where they find the secret centerpiece of his operations: a half-vivisected Vision, plugged into Ultron??s servers and forced to obey the whim of the creator he once rebelled against.

The Hulk Rocks A Beard As The Maestro In "Future Imperfect"

The Hulk Rocks A Beard As The Maestro In "Future Imperfect"

    [ranking: 12]
When it comes to sheer damage dealt, it is tough to beat the Maestro. The white-beard-rocking future version of the Hulk was first seen in the aptly named miniseries Future Imperfect. In the story, a time-traveling Rick Jones pulls the modern day Hulk into the future to battle against his more experienced self.
It turned out that Maestro had already killed all of the other heroes and villains in the world in his eternal quest to be alone. He had also hoarded himself a pretty rad trophy room, to boot.

Hawkeye Has A Much Younger Wife In "Old Man Logan"

Hawkeye Has A Much Younger Wife In "Old Man Logan"

    [ranking: 13]
There's nothing overtly unsettling about future Hawkeye in Old Man Logan. Clint Barton is now blind and sporting a classic old guy ponytail - oh, and a questionable choice of wife. It??s eventually revealed that Hawkeye had a child with the daughter of Spider-Man.
Given that the avenging archer is generally portrayed as far older than Spidey, this is a very skeevy relationship on Hawkeye??s part.

Groot Is An Actual Tree In "Avengers"

Groot Is An Actual Tree In "Avengers"

    [ranking: 14]
The alien Groot, best known as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, is undeniably tree-like. He??s tall like a tree, covered in what appears to be bark, and even sprouts leaves every now and then. However, the thought of Groot spending the rest of eternity as an actual tree is still sad.
That??s apparently what happens in one future that the Avengers visit, which is thousands of years beyond theirs. The only recognizable characters left around are the nigh-omnipotent Franklin Richards and Groot, now fully transformed into a mighty oak. He can still say ??I am Groot,?? at least.

Captain American Becomes Bruce Willis In "Earth X"

Captain American Becomes Bruce Willis In "Earth X"

    [ranking: 15]
Marvel??s answer to DC??s groundbreaking Kingdom Come was Earth X, a series set in the future of the Marvel Universe and beautifully illustrated by Alex Ross. Ross??s depictions of superheroes several decades past their prime was one of the most distinguishing aspects of the event, but some of his design choices left readers a bit disturbed.
A few, like the pudgy Spider-Man or balding Cyclops, were just tough to look at. Others, like a Captain America who eerily resembles Bruce Willis, just made everyone feel weird.

Wiccan Becomes The Demiurge In "Young Avengers"

Wiccan Becomes The Demiurge In "Young Avengers"

    [ranking: 16]
Wiccan is one of the more notable heroes still around from the original run of Young Avengers, known both for his status as a child of the Scarlet Witch and his presence as one of the first openly gay superheroes. Wiccan also appears to be incredibly important to the future of the Marvel universe, as a few different storylines have revealed that he becomes a menacing figure known as the Demiurge.
In some glimpses of the future, the Demiurge is a Sorcerer Supreme, but in others he??s a genocidal maniac.

There's something inherently intriguing about weird alternate versions of superheroes. Fans of other entertainment genres may not understand the fascination that comic book fans have with alternate futures and future versions of superheroes. TV shows and movies may offer brief flash forwards to increase tension and generate suspense, but rarely do they spend more than a moment in the future. Comic books, on the other hand, devote entire issues, story arcs, and major crossover events to dozens of possible futures and characterizations. The X-Men started the trend with their highly successful Days of Future Past arc, and since then nearly every major superhero has grabbed a piece of the prognostication pie.

Sometimes, these visions of the future and its heroes are pleasant and utopian. But more often, they’re the exact opposite of that. Most comic book futures run the gamut between dystopia and outright apocalypse. In fact, some of them literally feature a giant blue menace named Apocalypse raining terror down upon humanity with his Four Horseman. Yes, alternate futures are mostly meant to be foreboding and dreadful, but some take that extra step to become more disturbing than anything. Read on to discover what upsetting versions of superheroes populate the pages of comics, and cast your vote for the creepiest of all.
