About This Tool

Since its founding on May 4, 1910, the Royal Canadian Navy has relied on Britain for its naval power and has been unable to keep up with it. During the depression of the 1930s, the navy was so greatly reduced that when the war was declared against Germany in September 1939, the Royal Canadian Navy had only six destroyers, five minesweepers and two training boats, with only 2,000 men. But soon after, Canada began to expand its navy, which to date has 184 principal ships, recorded in a random tool.

Most of these Royal Navy vessels were purchased during the Cold War, and some have been purchased from other countries in recent years. After World War II, RCN returned and refitted its reserve fleet, launched new warships, and improved its aviation capabilities.
