About This Tool

In 1982, the Queen signed the Canadian Constitution Act and the Canadian parliament was given full power to establish and amend the constitution. In the second half of the 20th century, a number of french-speaking provinces in Quebec demanded independence, but the independent side of the two referendums (1980 and 1995) narrowly escaped with 40% and 49.4% of the vote. Since then, Canada has amended its legislation to make it clear that when the issues raised in the referendum in Quebec are sufficiently clear and supported by a clear majority, quebec may enter into a consultative process with the government of Canada for secession.
