About This Tool
In 1926, Britain recognized Canada’s sovereignty in international negotiations and affairs and gained diplomatic independence. After being added to the Commonwealth in 1931, its parliament also gained equal legislative power with the British parliament. In March 1982, the Canadian Constitution Act was passed by the House of Lords and the House of Commons, and the Canadian parliament gained full power to legislate and amend the constitution. The House of Commons is the main nucleus of parliamentary power in Canada. The role of the Monarchy of Canada is symbolic, and the House of Lords does not usually reject bills that have passed the House of Commons. Moreover, the Prime Minister and Cabinet of Canada require the confidence of the House of Commons (that is, half or more of the members of the House of Commons), but not the House of Lords.
