In 1901, following the adoption by the British Parliament of the Commonwealth Constitution of Australia of 1900 and the British Dominions Ordinance, Australia was formally established as a Commonwealth constitutional state. As part of the Member State of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Australian legal system is structured and its legal traditions are largely based on English common law traditions and principles.
