  • Grant And Ellie Are No Longer Together In ‘Jurassic Park III’ on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#1) Grant And Ellie Are No Longer Together In ‘Jurassic Park III’

While there's some speculation about whether or not Ellie Sattler and Alan Grant were a couple in the first Jurassic Park, it's clear that they had a connection. The first film spent time building up their relationship, which led fans to hope that the two would commit to each other and have a family by the third film.

Instead, Jurassic Park III reveals that Ellie left Alan when he didn't want to settle down. So, she married a State Department employee and had two children with him instead. It's an unsatisfying subplot that many fans could've done without.

  • Vicki Vale Suddenly Isn’t Around Anymore In ‘Batman Returns’ on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#2) Vicki Vale Suddenly Isn’t Around Anymore In ‘Batman Returns’

Vicki Vale, Batman's love interest from the 1989 Batman film, is gone without a trace in Batman Returns. According to the first draft of the script from Batman Returns, the film was supposed to be a direct sequel of the first film, with Vicki included in it. However, Tim Burton wasn't a fan of sequels, so he rewrote the script with a new Gotham City in mind. It no longer made sense for Vicki to appear in the universe.

There are only two scenes in Batman Returns in which Bruce Wayne acknowledges Vicki's existence. He briefly chastises Alfred Pennyworth for letting her into his Batcave in the first film, then later mentions to Selina Kyle (Catwoman) that Vicki ended things because she could not accept his two lives.

  • John McClane Saves His Wife’s Life Twice Then They’re Separated In ‘Die Hard With a Vengeance’ on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#3) John McClane Saves His Wife’s Life Twice Then They’re Separated In ‘Die Hard With a Vengeance’

John McClane went through so much to keep his wife, Holly Gennaro McClane, safe. He fends off terrorists while trying to fix their deteriorating marriage, and he turns down the advances of other beautiful women. He's committed to his wife throughout the first two films, but she still leaves him in the end.

In Die Hard with a Vengeance, they're separated, and Holly is never even seen in the film (though her voice is heard on the phone). Finally, in Live Free or Die Hard, it's revealed that the couple just couldn't make it work, so they're now divorced. It seemed there was no longer a need for her character in the later films, but actor Bonnie Bedelia says that she thinks her character is doing just fine on her own.

In fact, the actor has her own idea on what happened after Holly's disappearance: "Holly got remarried. There have been other Die Hards since then, and she's not there. And the daughter's there. So if she was still in the picture, it would be different. And, you know, she's too lovely to be alone for long."

  • ‘Speed 2: Cruise Control’ Immediately Dispenses With The Annie And Jack Relationship on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#4) ‘Speed 2: Cruise Control’ Immediately Dispenses With The Annie And Jack Relationship

The relationship that Jack (Keanu Reeves) and Annie (Sandra Bullock) built up in Speed doesn't matter in Speed 2: Cruise Control because Jack is nowhere to be seen. In the sequel, it's said they broke up because Jack's risky involvement with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) was too much for Annie, so she ended things. Yet, she gets together with a different member of the LAPD in Speed 2 without a second thought.

As it turns out, actor Reeves actually chose for his character to not be present in the second film. "I decided not to be in that," Reeves said. "It was about a cruise ship and I was like okay, speed cruise ship... not so fast. A cruise ship is even slower than a bus." He knew from the start that the sequel was a bad idea, and he wasn't wrong.

  • Jane Foster Stops Being Important In Thor’s Life After His First Two Movies on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#5) Jane Foster Stops Being Important In Thor’s Life After His First Two Movies

Despite Jane Foster's large role in the first two Thor films, she no longer appears in Thor: Ragnarok. At the start of the third film, it reveals that they have broken up, but it also makes more sense logically. Thor: Ragnarok takes place away from Earth, which is where Natalie Portman's character resides.

Yet, despite Jane's absence in the third film, it has been revealed that she will return for Thor: Love and Thunder. Portman explained:

They came to me. Obviously I wasn't written into the third Thor because of where it took place. It wasn't really on Earth and my character was on Earth. And then they came to me with the fourth idea and said, you know, "We have this idea, that was a storyline in some of the comics, where Jane becomes Lady Thor." And I was like, this is very exciting.

  • Marion Suddenly Isn’t In Indy’s Life In ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ (But Returns For ‘Crystal Skull’) on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#6) Marion Suddenly Isn’t In Indy’s Life In ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ (But Returns For ‘Crystal Skull’)

Indiana Jones is known for his incredible adventures, but many people seem to forget that he's not great at holding a relationship. Marion Ravenwood disappears from Indy's life without a trace in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Other love interests like Willie Scott and Elsa Schneider have vanished without an explanation, too.

Marion later returns for Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. Actor Karen Allen said she chose to step away from the film series for a while because she just wanted a break. "I spent a few years trying to shake Marion off of me. I played that role, and now I’d like to play something completely different," she explains.

  • Ali Suddenly Changes Personalities In 'The Karate Kid Part II' on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#7) Ali Suddenly Changes Personalities In 'The Karate Kid Part II'

Ali Mills seems like a sweet girl in the original Karate Kid, but in the sequel she's anything but sweet. Apparently, she wrecked Daniel LaRusso's car, which caused them to split. It seemed very out of character for her, but she has since returned for the spinoff, Cobra Kai. Actor Elisabeth Shue, who played Ali, explained:

In Karate Kid 2, my character was kind of pushed aside in a way that didn't feel so great. So it's funny how the idea of Ali coming back [started]. [...] At first, I thought, "Well, her character really left the world of The Karate Kid in a way that wasn't so great... would people care about her coming back?"

In The Karate Kid Part II, Daniel ended up with a girl named Kumiko instead. Coincidentally, she disappears in The Karate Kid Part III, and Daniel has a new girlfriend yet again.

  • 'The Bourne Ultimatum' Suggests That Jason And Nicky Had A Romantic Relationship, Then Bumps Her Off In The Sequel on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#8) 'The Bourne Ultimatum' Suggests That Jason And Nicky Had A Romantic Relationship, Then Bumps Her Off In The Sequel

Jason Bourne's amnesia is one of the key points of the film, but there are some unanswered questions. In The Bourne Ultimatum, Nicky Parsons implies that the two of them had romantic connections before his memory loss (though this topic isn't even hinted at in the previous two films). Then, in the fifth film, Jason Bourne, Nicky returns to seek Jason's help, but she meets her demise before any romance takes place.

This seems to be a running theme with Jason. His love interest from the first film, Marie Kreutz (Franka Potente), is unceremoniously dispatched in the sequel, The Bourne Supremacy

  • In ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon,’ Sam Witwicky Is Dating A New, Unrelated Supermodel on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#9) In ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon,’ Sam Witwicky Is Dating A New, Unrelated Supermodel

At the start of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Sam Witwicky is in a serious relationship with Carly, who was never seen in the previous films. Up until that point, Sam was in a relationship with Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox), who is never mentioned in the third film. Carly appears to be little more than a substitute for Mikaela.

Megan Fox said some harsh things about director Michael Bay in an interview, even comparing him to a *particular* German Reich leader. This led to her getting fired, which explains why her character ceases to exist. According to Bay, "[Fox] was in a different world, on her BlackBerry. You gotta stay focused. And you know, the Hitler thing. Steven [Spielberg] said, 'Fire her right now.'"

  • Larry Is No Longer Interested In Rebecca During 'Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian' on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#10) Larry Is No Longer Interested In Rebecca During 'Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian'

Despite starting a relationship with Rebecca Hutman at the end of Night at the Museum, Larry Daley seems to be single again in the sequel. Rebecca is never mentioned or shown in Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, so it's inferred that they broke up off screen.

Instead, Larry seems to be interested in Amelia Earhart in the sequel. However, Earhart isn't present in the third film because she's no longer in action. She chose to fly during daylight, causing her to turn to dust.

  • Newt And Tina's Relationship In 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' Seems Nonexistent on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#11) Newt And Tina's Relationship In 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' Seems Nonexistent

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ended with Newt Scamander and Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein being in love. So, fans expected their romance to blossom in the sequel. Instead, there was very little focus on their relationship. “It’s desperate because they’re sort of pining for each other, but things have gone awry. Part of this film is about them refinding each other,” actor Eddie Redmayne explained.

In the 2001 book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, it is noted that Porpentina is indeed Scamander's wife, so fans know this love story isn't over yet.

  • Mia And Michael Are Suddenly Just Friends In 'The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement' on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#12) Mia And Michael Are Suddenly Just Friends In 'The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement'

In The Princess Diaries book series, Michael Moscovitz is the main love interest for Mia Thermopolis. At the end of the first film, we get to see the kiss between them that we'd all been waiting for. Yet, in The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement, Mia and Michael are back to being just friends. In fact, Michael doesn't make an appearance at all in the sequel.

Actor Robert Schwartzman was touring with his rock band, Rooney, while the sequel was filmed. Coincidentally, the excuse for Michael not being present is that his band was also on tour.

  • The ‘Entourage’ Movie Immediately Undoes The Relationship That The Series Finale Is Based Around on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#13) The ‘Entourage’ Movie Immediately Undoes The Relationship That The Series Finale Is Based Around

The Entourage series ended with Vincent Chase boarding a plane to Paris to marry Sophia Lear. Since the movie takes place only a few months after the series ended, it makes sense that the newlyweds' romance would be front and center. Instead, it's nonexistent.

Apparently, Sophia divorced Vince on their honeymoon, only nine days after their marriage. This explains why she is no longer present in the film, but it makes the series finale seem insignificant. Yet, actor Adrian Grenier thinks that the divorce made perfect sense for his character: "Come on, it's Entourage - did you really think it would last?"

  • Charley And Amy Split At The Start Of 'Fright Night 2' on Random Sequels That Totally Blew Up Relationships For No Reason

(#14) Charley And Amy Split At The Start Of 'Fright Night 2'

Fright Night concludes with a happy ending for both Charley and Amy. They're both safe and very much in love. Yet, at the start of Fright Night 2, Amy is gone with no real closure. She's briefly mentioned in the beginning of the sequel, but it's unclear what happened to her.

Instead, Charley has a new girlfriend named Alex. Charley is now in college instead of high school, so it can only be inferred that he and Amy drifted apart as they started new stages of their lives.
