  (#12) Mia And Michael Are Suddenly Just Friends In 'The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement'

  In The Princess Diaries book series, Michael Moscovitz is the main love interest for Mia Thermopolis. At the end of the first film, we get to see the kiss between them that we'd all been waiting for. Yet, in The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement, Mia and Michael are back to being just friends. In fact, Michael doesn't make an appearance at all in the sequel.

  Actor Robert Schwartzman was touring with his rock band, Rooney, while the sequel was filmed. Coincidentally, the excuse for Michael not being present is that his band was also on tour.

  (#9) In ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon,’ Sam Witwicky Is Dating A New, Unrelated Supermodel

  At the start of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Sam Witwicky is in a serious relationship with Carly, who was never seen in the previous films. Up until that point, Sam was in a relationship with Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox), who is never mentioned in the third film. Carly appears to be little more than a substitute for Mikaela.

  Megan Fox said some harsh things about director Michael Bay in an interview, even comparing him to a *particular* German Reich leader. This led to her getting fired, which explains why her character ceases to exist. According to Bay, "[Fox] was in a different world, on her BlackBerry. You gotta stay focused. And you know, the Hitler thing. Steven [Spielberg] said, 'Fire her right now.'"

  (#1) Grant And Ellie Are No Longer Together In ‘Jurassic Park III’

  While there's some speculation about whether or not Ellie Sattler and Alan Grant were a couple in the first Jurassic Park, it's clear that they had a connection. The first film spent time building up their relationship, which led fans to hope that the two would commit to each other and have a family by the third film. 

  Instead, Jurassic Park III reveals that Ellie left Alan when he didn't want to settle down. So, she married a State Department employee and had two children with him instead. It's an unsatisfying subplot that many fans could've done without.

  (#8) 'The Bourne Ultimatum' Suggests That Jason And Nicky Had A Romantic Relationship, Then Bumps Her Off In The Sequel

  Jason Bourne's amnesia is one of the key points of the film, but there are some unanswered questions. In The Bourne Ultimatum, Nicky Parsons implies that the two of them had romantic connections before his memory loss (though this topic isn't even hinted at in the previous two films). Then, in the fifth film, Jason Bourne, Nicky returns to seek Jason's help, but she meets her demise before any romance takes place.

  This seems to be a running theme with Jason. His love interest from the first film, Marie Kreutz (Franka Potente), is unceremoniously dispatched in the sequel, The Bourne Supremacy.

  (#11) Newt And Tina's Relationship In 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' Seems Nonexistent

  Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ended with Newt Scamander and Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein being in love. So, fans expected their romance to blossom in the sequel. Instead, there was very little focus on their relationship. “It’s desperate because they’re sort of pining for each other, but things have gone awry. Part of this film is about them refinding each other,” actor Eddie Redmayne explained.

  In the 2001 book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, it is noted that Porpentina is indeed Scamander's wife, so fans know this love story isn't over yet.

  (#2) Vicki Vale Suddenly Isn’t Around Anymore In ‘Batman Returns’

  Vicki Vale, Batman's love interest from the 1989 Batman film, is gone without a trace in Batman Returns. According to the first draft of the script from Batman Returns, the film was supposed to be a direct sequel of the first film, with Vicki included in it. However, Tim Burton wasn't a fan of sequels, so he rewrote the script with a new Gotham City in mind. It no longer made sense for Vicki to appear in the universe.

  There are only two scenes in Batman Returns in which Bruce Wayne acknowledges Vicki's existence. He briefly chastises Alfred Pennyworth for letting her into his Batcave in the first film, then later mentions to Selina Kyle (Catwoman) that Vicki ended things because she could not accept his two lives.
