About This Tool

In 535, Francis I of France King France ordered the navigator Jacques Kartier to explore the “new world” in order to find a passage to India. Cartier made his first expedition to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He didn’t know what he would find there, but he hoped it was a branch of the ocean that would lead him to the Far East. So he swam up the Saint Lawrence River. Instead of arriving in Asia as he had hoped, he went to Québec, where the Indians called it “Stadakona”. Two young Indians told Jacques Cartier’s route to “KANATA”, referring to Canada, a name that remained in use until the early 17th century.
