Using Those Wall-Crawling Hands For A Sinister New Purpose

Using Those Wall-Crawling Hands For A Sinister New Purpose

    [ranking: 1]
Kaine Parker was once a ??corrupted?? clone of the original Spider-Man, and he came with a matching set of spider-powers - including an acidic touch derived from Spidey??s wall-crawling abilities. During the events of the Spider-Man: Grim Hunt, Kaine ends up sacrificing his life to save Peter from the family of Kraven the Hunter. An enraged Spidey ironically hunts Kravinoff and his family down and dispatches some savage vengeance - a rampage that includes ripping the skin off of Kraven??s daughter??s face in a twisted tribute to the late Kaine.
This is Peter Parker at his most vicious, so much so that it borders on ??out of character?? territory.

    Zombie Spidey Does The Unthinkable

    Zombie Spidey Does The Unthinkable

    [ranking: 2]
The concept of the Marvel Zombies series is rather simple - a classic zombie virus infects an alternate version of the Marvel Universe - but the results are gruesome. The bad behavior spreads as more and more super-powered people get transformed into the walking dead, including the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
In a scene too difficult for most to read, the zombified Peter Parker turns on his wife, Mary Jane, and his beloved Aunt May, and devours them. To make matters worse, the Marvel Zombies version of the undead retain their memories, so Zombie Spidey has to live with what he??s done.

Breaking Wolverine??s Heart In The Literal Sense

Breaking Wolverine??s Heart In The Literal Sense

    [ranking: 3]
The story of Kaine Parker is a lot more complicated than that of the previous Spider-Man, Peter Parker. Kaine is a clone of Parker from the much-maligned Clone Saga. Once corrupted and evil, he eventually gets cured - and becomes slightly less evil.
As the Scarlet Spider, Kaine does his best to give Houston the hero it needs, but he isn??t afraid to bend the rules in the name of justice. This can occasionally run him afoul of other superheroes, like Wolverine - who Kaine gruesomely stabs in the heart with his stinger, rather than engage in a drawn-out battle with the quick-healing mutant.

With Great Power Comes Great Bloodshed

With Great Power Comes Great Bloodshed

    [ranking: 4]
The Superior Spider-Man - Otto Octavius - does a wonderful job of making Spider-Man look like a corrupt and maniacal villain. Technically, he??s still a superhero of sorts - albeit, an incredibly violent one. Whereas the original Spidey would never use his super-strength against non-powered individuals, Doc Ock has no issue dealing out horrific injuries to even the lowliest of villains. He even installs claws on his fingertips and uses them to vicious effect against Jester and Screwball, a couple of costume-wearing YouTube pranksters.
It??s not exactly a sign of restraint on the part of Octavius, and it??s a far cry from the typical behavior of the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

An Entirely Different Kind Of Slinging

An Entirely Different Kind Of Slinging

    [ranking: 5]
Spider-Man accidentally killed a KGB spy named Charlie during an adventure with Wolverine, and he didn??t take it very well. One issue of What If? Spider-Man Versus Wolverine, though, explores what might happen if he mishandled the situation entirely. This version of Spidey leans into his newfound lethality, as he cuts a bloody swath across Europe, killing those responsible for Charlie??s persecution - including terrorists and supervillains, like the Crimson Dynamo.
This dark alternate Spidey even hides guns in his web-shooters and uses one of them to dispatch the Swordsman coldly.

    What Would Uncle Ben Think?

    What Would Uncle Ben Think?

    [ranking: 6]
Many of Spider-Man??s most violent moments can be explained away as the work of the Superior Spider-Man, whose eponymous series sees Otto Octavius in possession of Peter Parker??s body and memories. The former Doctor Octopus tries being a better superhero than Parker, but his definition of heroics includes the occasional lethal dose of justice. The Superior Spider-Man??s most shocking act comes as he shoots the mass-murdering Massacre square in the face, in cold blood, and in front of a large crowd.
It becomes difficult for the people of New York to see Spidey in the same light after this incident, and Parker ends up in need of serious image rehabilitation when he finally regains control of his body.

Orange Is The New Black-Suit Spider-Man

Orange Is The New Black-Suit Spider-Man

    [ranking: 7]
Few realize just how strong Spider-Man really is, as he's known for pulling his punches. At the very least, Spidey's strong enough to slap the gargantuan Wilson Fisk around like a rag doll in what must be considered one of the more embarrassing beatdowns in comics. This incident occurs when the Kingpin puts a hit on a recently unmasked Peter Parker - and Aunt May ends up taking a bullet.
In Spider-Man: Back in Black, an enraged Spidey shows up at the institution where Fisk is incarcerated and beats him within an inch of his life, letting Kingpin know he could easily kill him if he ever decided to -  if not for that whole ??great responsibility?? thing.

    Spidey Slays The Spider-Slayer

    Spidey Slays The Spider-Slayer

    [ranking: 8]
Alistair Smythe is a member of Spider-Man??s rogues gallery with a long and terrible history. Frequently known as the Spider-Slayer, Smythe murders countless individuals - including J. Jonah Jameson??s wife, Marla - and he ends up sentenced to death for his crimes. When he inevitably escapes imprisonment, Smythe is confronted by Doctor Octopus, yet again in control of Peter Parker??s body.
The Spider-Slayer has the honor of being one of the first to learn the true identity of the Superior Spider-Man, but Otto Octavius only lets him in on the secret a few seconds before fatally stabbing him in the chest.

Beating Up The Debilitated Is Not A Great Look

Beating Up The Debilitated Is Not A Great Look

    [ranking: 9]
Doctor Octopus has committed plenty of monstrous crimes in his lengthy career as a supervillain, but it??s still difficult to watch Spider-Man beat down such an aged and debilitated version of Otto Octavius. There??s more to this scene than meets the eye, though. The battle in question is actually between Peter Parker - occupying the dying body of Octavius - and the soon-to-be Superior Spider-Man - Doc Ock in control of Parker??s body.
Facing a terminal diagnosis, Octavius switches his consciousness with Parker's before viciously pummeling him, and Peter Parker dies stuck in the body of a supervillain - until he inevitably returns, of course. This is comics, after all.

Spider-Man Steps Up A Weight Class And Lays Down A Beating

Spider-Man Steps Up A Weight Class And Lays Down A Beating

    [ranking: 10]
One of Spider-Man??s most impressive victories ever comes against Firelord, a Herald of Galactus. This clash comes during the period when Peter Parker is wearing the Symbiote suit, and he channels the alien??s power and rage to lay a serious whooping on a villain several weight classes above him.
Spidey beats Firelord so relentlessly that Captain America has to step in and pull the wall-crawler back - a dark and early portent of the violent potential of the Venom Symbiote.

    Spidey??s First Accidental Murder

    Spidey??s First Accidental Murder

    [ranking: 11]
The mainstream 616 continuity version of Peter Parker has kept his hands cleaner than most superheroes over his decades of publishing history. He has killed at least one person directly, though - albeit, by accident. In the Spider-Man Versus Wolverine miniseries, the duo encounter Charlie, former lover of Logan and a KGB spy on the outs with her government. When it becomes apparent Charlie will be hunted by the Soviets until the end of her days, she asks Wolverine to mercy-kill her, but Spidey won??t let it happen.
Spidey tussles with Wolverine, but during their battle, Charlie purposefully walks in front of a powerful haymaker from Spider-Man - and gets her fatal wish.

    Unfortunate Shades Of ??Spider-Man 3??

    Unfortunate Shades Of ??Spider-Man 3??

    [ranking: 12]
Of all the regrettable scenes that fill Sam Raimi??s Spider-Man 3, the most uncomfortable to watch is Peter Parker smacking Mary Jane. Unfortunately, it??s also a scene borrowed from the comics. This time around, Parker doesn??t have a Symbiote to blame - he??s just incredibly stressed by the ongoing Clone Saga and loses track of his actions. When Mary Jane tries to break up a fight between Peter and Ben Reilly, Peter ends up hurting Mary Jane.
It??s entirely accidental, but still not a great look for the star of a Saturday morning cartoon, explaining why writers wisely choose to ignore this particular bit of continuity.

Punching A Hole In The Iron Man Of The Future

Punching A Hole In The Iron Man Of The Future

    [ranking: 13]
Arno Stark, the Iron Man of 2020, is a descendant of Tony Stark who travels back in time to interfere with the modern world. While on his timeline-manipulating journey, Arno has a run-in with Spider-Man during the period when Spidey is wearing the Symbiote suit - and it doesn??t go well for Iron Man 2020.
A stronger and angrier wall-crawler lays a whooping on the Stark legacy and does some serious damage to his futuristic armor - including what appears like fistic impalement in one panel.
Fortunately, it??s just a case of ambiguous art, and Spidey isn??t actually ripping out Iron Man??s internal organs.

What makes Spider-Man a good hero? The answer is a multi-faceted one, but can best be boiled down to Uncle Ben’s famous words of wisdom - "With great power, there must also come great responsibility." That’s why the physically and mentally superior Spider-Man can’t just go about beating bad guys into paste - he’s honor-bound to use his amazing abilities responsibly.

So, why do so many images exist on the internet of Spidey committing horrific acts of violence? The answer, as with comic books themselves, can get a bit complicated. It can best be summed up as a blend of bad decisions, alternate realities, and body-swapping villains. Just another day in the life of your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
