(#1) Lois Griffin
- Family Guy
Despite the name of the show, Peter is far from being a family guy. His behavior often puts his wife and children in peril. He spends a lot of time getting wasted with his drinking buddies and acting like an idiot. He takes his wife for granted, disrespects her, and pulls deadly pranks.
Oh, and he doesn’t shy away from admitting to being attracted to other women. Why does Lois stay with him? It’s a mystery.
-
(#2) Marge Simpson
- The Simpsons
Seeing Marge get frustrated with Homer’s many annoying habits can be amusing, but it certainly doesn’t win him any husband of the year awards. He often puts the entire family in danger, which is not a solid foundation for a long-lasting marriage. Remember when he buys a gun and proceeds to carry it everywhere, in spite of Marge’s pleas to get rid of the weapon?
Or when he gets into an accident while driving drunk and makes it look like his wife was behind the wheel? Yeah, Marge can definitely do better.
-
(#3) Alice Kramden
- The Honeymooners
While seeing Alice and Ralph constantly bicker was considered fun back in the '50s, it was clear to everybody that Alice was much better than her husband. Add in the fact that he often uses space travel as a metaphor for hitting her and you’ve got yourself the perfect recipe for an unsuccessful marriage.
The fact that, "One of these days, Alice - pow! Straight to the Moon!" remains a classic sitcom line speaks volumes. Thankfully, threatening your wife with domestic violence isn’t sitcom material anymore.
-
(#5) Alicia Florrick
- The Good Wife
Yes, if Alicia left Peter early on, there would have been no series. But seriously, this woman stands by her man so many times during the show’s run that even fans grow tired of her benevolence. He repeatedly cheats on her, abuses his power in the office, and disrespects their marriage.
The fact that he’s a decent father doesn’t cut him too much slack. Despite the political advantages the marriage brings them both, Alicia would have been better off saying good-bye for good in Season 1.
-
(#6) Lynette Scavo
- Desperate Housewives
Tom Scavo may seem like a nice husband from the outside. But the more you think about it, the more you realize that he’s actually a selfish prick. He guilts Lynette into having children and putting her career on hold, while he’s pretty content following his own dreams.
Not to mention the fact that he’s always suffering through a midlife crisis, has serious communications issues, and often keeps things from his wife. Lynette would probably thrive on her own.
-
(#7) Carmela Soprano
- The Sopranos
Carmela is a strong woman, so her decision to put up with Tony in the long run is baffling. He’s a ruthless mobster who doesn’t shy away from cheating or, you know, murder. While his money provides a comfortable lifestyle for Carmela, the emotional damage she suffers at his hands would push any sane woman to file for a divorce.
-
(#8) Carrie Heffernan
- The King of Queens
Doug may seem all nice and sweet at first glance, but he is far from a good husband. In contrast, Carrie is pretty cool, which makes them probably the most unrealistic couple in sitcom history. He once makes her shave her head for cash and then complains that she looks ugly. Another episode sees him getting her drunk night after night, so that she would be nicer to him.
And at one point, he basically buys an apartment to get away from her. To say this is an unhealthy relationship would be an understatement.
-
(#9) Debra Barone
- Everybody Loves Raymond
Raymond’s big flaw is that family values aren’t high on his list of priorities. He focuses on work and golf more than on helping with the kids, which causes a strain on his marriage with Debra. No wonder she’s always in a bad mood, which is mostly played for laughs. In real life, she would have probably asked for a divorce quite early in the series.
-
(#10) Peggy Bundy
- Married... with Children
Al Bundy is the poster boy for bad husbands. He’s disrespectful and a complete jerk. At one point, he starts an anti-feminist group called No Ma’am. He clearly doesn’t care one bit about Peggy’s needs. And while she’s not the best wife in the world, at least she wouldn’t have to endure his crass comments all the time if they’d get a divorce.
-
(#11) Claire Underwood
- House of Cards
Frank is as ruthless as they come. Even if Claire doesn’t shy away from doing bad things, Frank takes the crown for being the more power-hungry sociopath of the couple and a horrible influence on his wife. He murders a reporter, constantly abuses his power, and manipulates everyone in sight.
It’s pretty clear that Claire would benefit from getting a divorce - if not on a professional level, at least on a personal one.
-
(#12) Ari Gold
- Entourage
Ari Gold is a great agent, but he's a less than great as a husband. Melissa often suffers from his neglect, as he chooses to focus more on his clients than on his marriage. Although it’s clear he loves her, he does a poor job of showing it. Girl would be better off on her own.
-
(#13) Jill Taylor
The main problem with Tim? He is crude and selfish. He never admits he’s wrong and prevents his wife from having an actual, fulfilling career. Even worse, he only does the right thing when his faceless neighbor convinces him he needs to cut Jill some slack if he wants to stay married. Jill, sweetie, you would be better off alone.
-
(#14) Penny
- The Big Bang Theory
Look, to say that Penny and Leonard’s relationship is dysfunctional would be an understatement. He’s jealous, bitter, and has mommy issues. They would never work together in real life because, well, they have nothing in common. They get married only because Leonard pursues Penny relentlessly.
Once they tie the knot, things don’t get any better. When Raj moves in, Penny ends up spending more time with him than with Leonard. She doesn’t seem happy. In reality, she would have left her husband by now. And if she plans on living her best life, she needs to get those divorce papers out soon.
