After a brief reenactment of an actual witch trial, visitors retreat down a narrow staircase and witness the living conditions of the many accused witches who lived - and died - in jail. As the previous home of Rebecca Nurse, one of the 19 people hanged in Salem Village, this colonial farm exhibits a creepy sort of beauty. Not only do visitors learn of Nurse’s fate, but they see the grave of fellow victim George Jacobs. With a farmhouse, a replica of the Salem Village Meeting House, and the burial grounds, the Nurse Homestead is a Salem Witch Trial landmark that should not be missed.

This site was not built until the 19th century, but this list would not be complete without it. During the warmer half of the year, this is the site for Salem’s beloved play, Cry Innocent: The People vs Bridget Bishop. Not only does the audience see an amazing reenactment of Bishop’s trial, but they get to be part of the jury. After the show, there is still plenty to see in this historical hot spot! -
(#5) Salem Village Parsonage Site

Why to Go:
This is the spot where it all began and time may never rob it of its creepy appeal. As the former home of accused witches and witchcraft accusers, this site is at the heart of Salem Witch Trial history. Here, visitors can walk through the foundation of the old Parris estate and feel the chilling aura that still fills the air.

Why to Go:
Imagine the worst human living conditions possible, then dig deeper to the evils you wouldn’t even want to imagine. The result could be reminiscent of what it was like in the Salem Witch Jail and Dungeon during the hysteria. Some prisoners were tortured. Others were carted to Gallows Hill. Even more became sick or even died within their confines. Though the building is long gone, the site where hundreds of innocent men, women, and children were imprisoned will never be forgotten.

There’s something downright creepy about visiting the spot where 19 people were hanged. Even creepier is the fact that this Salem Witch Trials landmark was turned into a beautiful park where people bring their pets and children to play.

Why to Go:
Though it is technically part of Gallows Hill, this particular spot was recently revealed as the precise location where the gallows stood. Found in the lower region of Gallows Hill Park, it is easy to see how condemned “witches” were carted to their demise without toppling off the path as they likely would have atop the main hill.

As the oldest burial ground in Salem, this cemetery is rightfully one of the top Salem Witch Trials tourist sites. Locals and visitors peruse the rows of ancient headstones and marvel at the tokens people still leave for Salem Village’s lost souls. The solemnity in the air is amplified by the adjacent Witch Memorial that nearly merges with the burial ground.

Directly next to the Burying Point is the Salem Witch Trial Memorial. The old cobblestones of downtown Salem merge with much newer benches in a lovely tribute to those who were killed during the hysteria. Each of the 20 benches bears a name, cause of death, and date of execution. Locals and visitors often leave flowers and trinkets atop the benches, making the tribute seem newly fascinating no matter how many times you visit.

Why to Go:
Appropriately located across the street from where many accused witches were condemned, the Witchcraft Victims’ Memorial was created to clear some of those names. The monument is etched with some of the most infamous names in Salem Witch Trials history, along with several quotes from the accused, making it arguably one of the most beautiful memorials in New England.
