  • Cleopatra on Random Movies That Totally Shattered Celebrity Marriages

    (#1) Cleopatra

    • Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Martin Landau, Rex Harrison, Roddy McDowall, Carroll O'Connor, Hume Cronyn, Francesca Annis, Pamela Brown, Robert Stephens, Grégoire Aslan, Andrew Keir, Martin Benson, George Cole, Cesare Danova, Kenneth Haigh, Herbert Berghof

Destroyed Marriage #1: Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher (1959-1964)

Destroyed Marriage #2: Richard Burton and Sybil Williams (1949-1963)

When Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton started filming Cleopatra in 1961, they hated each other. She called him "brutish and boorish;" he called her "Miss Tits." When it was time for their first on-scene kiss, however, all of that seemed to go out the window. The director called cut, then cut again, then again... but they couldn't stop kissing.

There was one catch, however: they were both married at the time. Taylor was with her fourth husband, Eddie Fisher, and Burton was married to Sybil Williams. Once word of their scandalous kiss got out, their marriages went up in flames. The two eventually divorced their respective spouses and married each other from 1964 to 1974, divorced, and then remarried each other from 1975 to 1976.

Destroyed Marriage: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston (2000-2005)

It seems safe to name production of Mr. & Mrs. Smith as the moment when Brad Pitt's marriage to Jennifer Aniston imploded. Although Aniston cited "irreconcilable differences" in her divorce filing just months before the movie's premiere, Pitt later went on record as saying he "fell in love" while shooting the film with Angelina Jolie. Suddenly, the rumors of an on-set dalliance seemed to be true. Jolie also confirmed that sparks flew while filming, despite her hesitance to pursue a married man.

"It took until, really, the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realize that it might mean something more than we’d earlier allowed ourselves to believe," she said. "And both knowing that the reality of that was a big thing, something that was going to take a lot of serious consideration."

One month after Aniston's filing, a paparazzo spotted Jolie and Pitt vacationing with Jolie's adoptive son, Maddox, in Africa. Just like that, Brangelina was born.

Destroyed Marriage: Humphrey Bogart and Mayo Methot (1938-1945)

Before becoming one of the most famous couples in movie history, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were just friends - friends who happened to kiss and hold hands on set. After shooting a pivotal scene in 1944's To Have and Have Not, people started to notice playful behavior between 19-year-old Bacall and 44-year-old Bogart. According to costar Dan Seymour, despite the 25 year age difference, "We knew things were happening. He had that sort of smile you can still see on the screen.”

Unfortunately, Bogart was married to mentally unstable actress Mayo Methot, who wasn't thrilled to hear news of their flirtation. Bogart saw this as an opportunity to get out of a loveless marriage, and to avoid being stabbed by Methot again (really). The two divorced soon after the movie, and Bogey married Bacall. The couple stayed together until his death in 1957.

  • The Outlaw Josey Wales on Random Movies That Totally Shattered Celebrity Marriages

    (#4) The Outlaw Josey Wales

    • Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, John Vernon, Royal Dano, Sam Bottoms, Bill McKinney, Chief Dan George, Will Sampson, Woodrow Parfrey, Joyce Jameson, Paula Trueman, Geraldine Keams

Destroyed Marriage: Clint Eastwood and Maggie Johnson (1953-1984, separated in 1975)

Clint Eastwood had his share of flings, but his most notorious was likely on the set of The Outlaw Josey Wales. Though he was married to Maggie Johnson at the time, Eastwood began a not-so-secret affair with costar Sondra Locke that eventually led to the two cohabitating. The relationship, like his past extramarital dalliances, ended in failure and resentment, but it did lead to his divorce from Johnson.

Locke later described their tempestuous relationship in her memoir, The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly.

Henson, Toni Pilgreen, Jim Crowther, Daniel D. Greenwood, Mike Slattery, Shari Ellis

Destroyed Marriage: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers (1987-1990)

When Days of Thunder began filming in early 1990, Tom Cruise was already in hot water with then-wife Mimi Rogers due to his past philandering. His on-set whirlwind love affair with costar Nicole Kidman turned out to be the nail in the coffin, as Cruise and Rogers divorced just one month into the production process.

A former Scientology executive has said that Scientology leader David Miscavige also played a part in the divorce; he had an ongoing feud with Rogers's father. Regardless of the details, Cruise and Kidman married less than one year after meeting.

  • By The Sea: Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie on Random Movies That Totally Shattered Celebrity Marriages

(#6) By The Sea: Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie

Destroyed Marriage: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (2014-2016)

What goes up must come down, and Brangelina came down hard after 2015's By the Sea. At the time of the film's release, Jolie told press that the movie - which chronicles the disintegration of a marriage - was a "test" of her marriage to Brad, but in hindsight it seems more like a documentary. Rumors flew during production about Jolie's "dark side" poisoning her relationship during filming, while Jolie herself confirmed that she butted heads with her husband on set.

One year after the movie's release, Jolie filed for divorce.

  • The Misfits on Random Movies That Totally Shattered Celebrity Marriages

    (#7) The Misfits

    • Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Eli Wallach, Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter, Kevin McCarthy, James Barton, Philip Mitchell, Dennis Shaw

Destroyed Marriage: Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller (1956-1961)

Marilyn Monroe and playwright Arthur Miller had been married four years when they united professionally on the set of The Misfits, but the movie's pressures proved too much for the mismatched couple. Miller wrote the movie as a dramatic starring vehicle for Monroe, but annoyed her with his constant rewrites and blatant sexism. According to Monroe's biography, The Passion and the Paradox, Monroe, who had dubbed Miller a "peaceful monster" at the beginning of their marriage, claimed that the movie's most interesting roles had gone to its male stars. Add to that the fact that the pair were confined to the Nevada desert for months and Monroe's declining health, and it wasn't long before the couple divorced.

The Misfits turned out to be the last movie that Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable ever filmed before their respective deaths. Gable died 12 days after filming completed; Monroe died one year after the film was released. Some critics say the actress' performance in the film was the finest of her career.

Destroyed Marriage: Jennifer Garner and Scott Foley (2000-2004)

Destroyed Engagement: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez (2002-2004)

When Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner began filming Daredevil in 2002, they were both in committed relationships. Affleck was one half of the mythic, doomed power couple Bennifer (with Jennifer Lopez), while Garner was married to Scott Foley. Despite neither party admitting to any actual on-set liaisons, Affleck did confirm that he and Garner fell in love while filming the superhero flick.

"That’s where I found my wife," he said. "We met on Pearl Harbor, which people hate, but we fell in love on Daredevil."

One year after Daredevil premiered in February 2003, Affleck ended his engagement to Lopez. Two months later, Garner divorced Foley. The two made their first public appearance at a Red Sox game in October 2004.

Destroyed Marriage: Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson (1989-1995)

While Kenneth Branagh directed and starred in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, he was one half of the reigning couple of early '90s British cinema. Branagh had been married to Emma Thompson for five years before production started, but apparently couldn't overcome his attraction to his Frankenstein costar Helena Bonham Carter. Thompson divorced Branagh shortly after news broke of his affair with Bonham Carter, and has since made peace with the actress:

"As Mike Nicholls [the film and theatre director] once said, and I’ve picked it up because I think it’s such a wonderful phrase - all blood under the bridge. You can’t hold on to anything like that. I just think… pfft... It’s pointless. I haven’t got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago."

Destroyed Marriage: Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson (2008-2011)

Destroyed Relationship: Blake Lively and Penn Badgely (2007-2010)

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are coy about when they fell in love, but all signs point to them getting close on the set of Green Lantern. The two were spotted getting cozy in New York City during filming, and their friendship seemed to blow up their respective relationships at the time.

Shortly after filming ended, Lively broke up with Gossip Girl costar Penn Badgley and Scarlett Johannson divorced Reynolds. The two lovebirds married in 2012.

Destroyed Relationship #1: Rachel Weisz and Darren Aronofsky (2001-2010)

Destroyed Relationship #2: Daniel Craig and Satsuki Mitchell (2005-2010)

Rachel Weisz had been partnered with Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky for almost ten years when she began production on Dream House with Daniel Craig. The actor was engaged at the time of filming, but their attraction seemed undeniable.

Neither party claims that Dream House is the reason their respective relationships ended, but Weisz is candid about where she was going wrong before meeting Craig: "I worried about so many things and it was hard for me to feel happy or understand what made me happy. Once you reach your forties, you know where to look."

Weisz and Craig went public shortly after filming ended, and married only seven months later.

Billy Crudup was never married to Mary Louise Parker, but the pair had been partners for eight years. She was also seven months pregnant when he left her for his younger Stage Beauty co-star Claire Danes in 2005.

Parker opened up about her subsequent devastation in her 2015 memoir Dear Mr. You, while Danes has been candid about her part in the affair: "I was just in love with [Crudup], and needed to explore that and I was 24... I didn’t quite know what those consequences would be."

Destroyed Marriage: Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush (2005-2006)

Destroyed Relationship: Paris Hilton and Nick Carter

Teenaged jaws dropped across the country in 2006 when Nick Carter went on Ryan Seacrest's radio show and claimed that then-girlfriend Paris Hilton had hooked up with Chad Michael Murray while filming House of Wax in 2005. Even more scandalous was the fact that Murray was married to One Tree Hill co-star Sophia Bush at the time. Murray and Bush, who had been married for all of five months when the news broke, quickly separated and then divorced a few months later. In 2014, Bush defended her divorce from Murray while still circumventing the Paris Hilton rumors:

"We were two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place. To all the other co-stars who've worked it out, more power to you."

Viewers of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills know Northern Lights all too well. The Lifetime movie created plenty of drama on the reality TV series: on set, Brandi Glanville's ex-husband Eddie Cibrian cheated on her with LeAnn Rimes

Shortly after news broke of Cibrian and Rimes hooking up during filming, the two divorced their respective spouses. Cibrian and Rimes tied the knot in 2011.

Destroyed Marriage: James Cameron and Linda Hamilton (1997-1999)

Titanic director James Cameron and his fourth wife, actress Linda Hamilton, were not married for more than nine months before the famed director fell for actress Suzy Amis. Though the pair stayed together for about two years, Hamilton recalls having a hard time reconciling the relationship. She told The Telegraph, "The parading around, the lunches, the stress of being with Jim during the Titanic days - for years I could barely get make-up on, I was shaking so hard, because every award show we had was terrible."

Though Hamilton says she was very much in love with her husband at the time, she recalls a lot of behind the scenes stress. Shortly after their divorce, Cameron married Amis, his fifth wife, and they are still together as of 2019.

Destroyed Marriage: Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid (1991-2001)

While filming the kidnapping thriller Proof of Life, Meg Ryan and Russel Crowe were caught cuddling up to one another, consequently ending Ryan's marriage with Dennis Quaid. Ryan filed for shared custody of their son, Jack, and pair went their separate ways.

Years later, Jack, who was 8 year old at the time, opened up about the incident. He told Us Weekly, "It's kind of hard to ignore when you're at a grocery store and you're like, checking out and those magazines on the side [feature] a photo of [Ryan and Quaid] with a little paper rip thing. If they hadn't told me about the divorce, I would've been like 'What's that?' as a kid."

Jack remains close with both of his parents and Ryan and Crowe's romance appears to have been be short lived.
