  (#1) Tony Stark (AKA Iron Man)

  "And I... am... Iron Man."

  Not only is this an epic-as-hell line before Tony Stark sacrifices himself to destroy Thanos and his army, but it also makes you realize just how far these characters have come since Stark kickstarted the MCU in Iron Man by revealing himself to the world with the exact same words. It's only fitting that Iron Man leaves our lives the same way he came in.

  And if that wasn’t enough to get you going, the absolute swine decided to get another last word in from beyond the grave. Having left a pre-recorded heartfelt message for his daughter, he signs off (for good) with the beyond emotional “I love you 3000.”

  (#2) Yondu Udonta

  "He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy. I'm sorry I didn't do none of it right... I'm damn lucky you's my boy." 

  Having been somewhat of a menace in the first Guardians, it isn’t until the sequel that we learn more about the “soft side” of Yondu.

  After receiving orders from Ego, Quill's biological father, to pick up and deliver Peter when he was just a boy, it was always thought that Yondu bailed on the plan so he could use the boy’s small frame to nab loot in small spaces. However, it is revealed that once Yondu learned what was to become of young Peter (his father, Ego, was likely to eradicate him just like his many, many half-siblings before him), the space pirate never handed him over.

  It isn’t until the very end that Yondu reveals how he truly feels about Peter, right before he sacrifices himself for the person he is proud to call his son.

  (#3) Groot

  "We are Groot." 

  Groot is a hyper-intelligent, tree-like organism with a very limited vocabulary. When he is first introduced, he’s mainly painted as the muscle in a two-man (well, one-raccoon, one-tree) operation. Throughout the film, it is only his partner in crime, Rocket, who can decipher and translate his language, which is made up of the three words, “I am Groot.”

  His last words strike an emotional blow, as they’re not just uttered by a teary-eyed Groot that we’ve grown to adore - and who is now sacrificing himself to save his friends. With this simple variation, he is able to communicate love, unity, compassion, and hope to the audience without any translation required.

  "You will never be a god."

  When meeting his maker (for real this time, honest), Loki tells Thanos (the most powerful being in the universe) the one thing his executor will never be. Loki, forever reveling in his own godly mischief, is charmingly smug until his very last breath.

  (#5) Natasha Romanoff (AKA Black Widow)

  "Let me go. It's okay." 

  According to the Red Skull, in order to obtain the Soul Stone, “You must lose what you love.” Black Widow and Hawkeye then battle it out for who will be the one to sacrifice themselves, as the relationship they have with each other goes beyond words.

  Natasha eventually bests Clint, and assures him “it’s okay” before falling to her doom. She’s always tried to repay her debt to Clint and strike out the red in her ledger, so perhaps by doing this, she feels they're finally even.

  (#6) Peter Parker (AKA Spider-Man)

  "Mister Stark? I don't feel so good... I-I don't know what's happening. I don't wanna go. I don't wanna go. Mister Stark, please! Please, I don't wanna go! I don't wanna go... I'm sorry..."

  Not only is it traumatic watching a teenage boy perish into dust, but to hear him plea for his life at the same time is just messed up in general.

  However, these last words spoken by Peter Parker are a lot deeper than one might initially think. Why did he seem to be in a great deal of discomfort compared to the other victims of the Snap? Well, it is later revealed that due to his “Spidey-sense,” Peter could actually feel it happening. This adds a much darker dimension to the demise of a young Spider-Man.

  (#7) Odin

  "Asgard is not a place. It never was. This could be Asgard. Asgard is where our people stand. Even now... right now, those people need your help. [Thor: I'm not as strong as you.] No. You're stronger." 

  In a Mufasa-like fashion, Odin, the father/mentor that molded Thor from a glory-seeking jock into the hero he is today, gives him these last words of wisdom.

  The last words he speaks assure us that the responsibility of Asgard is in good hands before his spirit passes on entirely.

  (#8) Agent Phil Coulson

   "It's okay, boss. This was never going to work if they didn't have something to..."

  Next to Tony Stark, Agent Coulson is the guy that's been there from the beginning. He made his debut along with the very first Avenger in 2008's Iron Man.

  After suffering a fatal blow at the hands of Loki, Coulson utters an unfinished sentence of motivation to his boss, Nick Fury. The last word that he never got to say is presumed to be “avenge,” proving he was committed until the very end. (Don’t worry, though, he's later resurrected in TV’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)

  "Death is what gives life meaning. To know your days are limited, your time short. You'd think after all this time I'd be ready. But look at me, stretching one moment out into a thousand just so I can watch the snow."

  Unlike other MCU characters, the Ancient One knows exactly when her expiration date is, and has known this for quite some time.

  She really does practice what she preaches to Doctor Strange when stating, “It’s not about you.” Rather than putting things in place to avoid her fate, she defends death as the reason to make the most of life.

  In her final act, she elongates the passing of time to appreciate something as simple as snow during her last few seconds on Earth, signifying the good soul we always knew she had.

  "Oh no... motherfu-"

  Samuel L. Jackson isn’t Nick Fury. Nick Fury is Samuel L. Jackson!

  Audiences are more than familiar with Samuel L. Jackson’s vocabulary in his other, more mature features. And although fans love how he is still able to be his usual badass self in this role without any profanity, it's nice to get a little nod (even if it's just a teaser) to the Sam Jackson we know and love.

  (#11) Erik 'Killmonger' Stevens (AKA N'Jadaka)

  "Why, so you can just lock me up? Nah. Just bury me in the ocean... with my ancestors that jumped from the ships, 'cause they knew death... was better than bondage."

  Killmonger serves as a mirror version of T’Challa, as they both share the same values, only with different upbringings. His actions, although slightly deluded, are justified, and this really hits home when his last words echo the horrendous, emotional events from actual history.

  (#12) Pietro Maximoff

  "You didn't see that coming."

  Pietro Maximoff’s last words are both catchy and have a double meaning. Initially holding a grudge against the Avengers, along with his sister Wanda, Pietro first speaks these words while taunting Hawkeye with his super speed.

  When he says these words a second time, it’s after using his powers to take a barrage of bullets in Hawkeye's place. He isn’t just referring to the timely manner in which it was done, but also the surprise of his heroic sacrifice itself.

  "I love you." 

  AI butler turned android Avenger, Vision has always spoken in logical terms or rational statistics. When he begins a relationship with Wanda Maximoff, however, he slowly starts transitioning to more human emotions.

  Before the Mind Stone is shattered - ending the synthezoid's life - he manages to mouth the words “I love you” to Wanda. It's a big moment for an otherwise supremely rational being. Unfortunately, Thanos rewinds time, steals the Mind Stone, and eliminates Vision again.

  (#14) Steve Rogers (AKA Captain America)

  "No. No, I don't think I will."

  Rogers doesn't kick the bucket, but he certainly kicks the... shield? Though still alive, this is the last time we will see Steve Rogers as Captain America.

  Now an old man, he reveals that after going back in time and returning the Stones to their individual timeline, he chose not to come back to the present. The ring on his finger alludes to the fact that he met someone, and - although it's all but certain this person is Peggy Carter, the love of Rogers' life from his own time - the gentleman that Cap is, he chooses not to disclose her identity.

  (#15) Thanos

  "I am... inevitable."

  Thanos, the puppet master in the shadows for a good portion of the MCU, finally makes his move. It's immediately clear he is, without a doubt, the strongest foe our heroes have ever encountered. 

  "Inevitable" pretty much sums up how Thanos views his end goal, wiping out 50% of existence to create, in his eyes, perfect balance. What makes it even more annoying is that, by the end of Infinity War and even the majority of Endgame, we aren’t really in a position to argue with him.

  Thanos being defeated would have been satisfying enough, but his last cocksure statement makes it all the sweeter, as the smug smile is wiped from his face when he and his army are snapped out of existence.

  (#16) Quentin Beck (AKA Mysterio)

  "You'll see, Peter. People... they need to believe... and nowadays... they'll believe anything..."

  Not only is this statement referring to how Mysterio/Quentin Beck actually got everyone to believe he was a superhero from another dimension, but it also foreshadows his last words from beyond the grave when he frames Spider-Man - before revealing his true identity to the world.

  Funnily enough, Peter Parker constantly compares Quentin Beck to Tony Stark, and they both go out in a similar fashion. They both have last words in the flesh and last words from beyond the grave - in the form of a pre-recorded message.

  • The Avengers: Age of Ultron

  "You're unbearably naïve." 

  Now standing in a form more similar to that of his comic book counterpart, Ultron goes out with the same ideology he came in with.

  Although he was created to help facilitate world peace, like many interpretations of AI before him, Ultron comes to the conclusion that the best way to do that is to eradicate the planet's greatest threat: humanity itself.

  In his eyes, humans have caused more trouble than they’ve prevented - especially the Avengers. His last words are a bit unsettling, as they’re aimed at Vision's compassion for humanity. With quite the conflict of opinion, Vision is inevitably forced to punch Ultron's ticket.

  "The first of many. Cut off one head, two more shall take its place. Heil... HYDRA..."

  Heinz’s surname isn’t the only thing that’s a bit frightening about him. Initially, what he says sounds like the bitter lasts words of a fallen enemy of the new and improved Steve Rogers. However, this sinister metaphor actually foreshadows HYDRA infiltrating SHIELD in later years and, indeed, becoming even more powerful.

  (#19) Alexander Pierce

  "Hail... HYDRA..."

  Alexander Pierce is the smug snake who uses a different kind of power when it comes to sabotaging the Avengers: influence. As a secret senior member of HYDRA, he uses his status on the World Security Council to gain the trust of various leaders of the world.

  Given his deluded views, it’s no surprise he goes out supporting his evil organization, defiant until the very end.

  (#20) Malekith

  "Do you think that this can be stopped? The Aether cannot be destroyed."

  These last words carry a lot of weight due to how factual they are. The Aether is later revealed to be the Reality Stone, and reality - as far as we're aware - indeed cannot be destroyed.

  Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Malekith, who is crushed by one of his own ships.
