Radio télévision Marocque is a national radio and television institution run by the Moroccan government. It is based in Rabat and currently hosts three nationally broadcast programmes. The first programme is broadcast 24 hours a day in Arabic, the official language. The second programme is broadcast 19 hours a day in French, English and Spanish. The third programme is broadcast in Berber languages and Arabic for 19 hours a day. Television was launched in 1954, before independence, by a commercial company and was the first television station in Africa to go off the air. In March 1962, the state-run television station was set up, broadcasting in Arabic and French for six hours a day and in colour on the SAAKON system.
