About This Tool

The total area of Newaygo County is 3.90 square miles (10.10 km 2), with 3.74 square miles (9.69 km 2) of land and 0.16 square miles (0.41 km 2) of water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. including the Muskegon River through town, often used for canoeing, tubing, and fishing. The county is considered part of Western Michigan. Newaygo is part of the Roman diocese of Great Falls.

Newaygo’s record dates back to the 17th century and to the French coureur DES Bois (independent Catcher), and to the later fur company boatmen who traveled by canoe on the Muskegon River. Its ostensible name was given to Nuwagon, the leader of Ojibwe, who signed the Treaty of Saginaw in 1819, or “plenty of water” in Algonquian. Because of its long history, many historical sites have been built here, and many tourists have come here to admire them.
