Keweenaw County (Keweenaw County, Michigan) is a county in the northern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and is adjacent to Lake Superior to the north. The area is 15,452 square kilometers (of which 14,051 square kilometers, 90.93% is water surface area). According to the 2000 U.S. Census, there are a total of 2,301 people, making it the least populous county in the state. The county seat is Eagle River. Established on March 11, 1861, the county government was established on August 1. The county's name comes from the Keweenaw Peninsula (in Indian language it means "bypass").
