Members of Parliament are elected by popular vote. Under Canada’s Electoral Act, every citizen over the age of 18 has the right to stand for election to the House of Representatives. But Senators, judges, and provincial and municipal councilors can not run. The House of Representatives is elected by the candidate who wins the most votes in a constituency, following the “simple majority” system established in the UK. Candidates should be nominated by at least 100 voters, and all candidates should be screened in the constituency, with the eventual winner representing the political parties in the election. A deposit of $1,000 is required for each candidate and 60 per cent of the deposit is refundable if the candidate receives more than 10 percent of the valid votes cast in the constituency. The amount of each campaign contribution received by a candidate shall not exceed 1,100 yuan.
