About This Tool

During the Carthaginian, Roman Republic era, the post Arab empire flourished because of the Mediterranean trade. The Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a special political entity now based in Rome, got its name because it occupied Malta for centuries. Phoenicia settled here in the 10th and 8th CENTURIES BC. 1523, the Knights Hospitaller, was settled from Rhode Island, and 1798 was occupied by the French. 1814 became a British colony, declaring independence in September 1964 and establishing the Republic of Malta in 1974. Joined the EU in 2004.
