Twin sister of Luke Skywalker and daughter of Darth Vader, Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) more than holds her own in the male-dominated galaxy of the Star Wars films. Leia was the youngest senator ever elected to the Imperial Senate.
When she was kidnapped by Vader, the princess was severely tortured. However, she never gave in, and vehemently refused to give the enemy the location of the Rebel base.

Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) appears in all eight Harry Potter films and is the glue that holds Ron and Harry together throughout the seven-book series. She is hyper-intelligent and some would - in fact, often do - call her a know-it-all.

Sure, Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) was the skeptic scientist and her FBI partner Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) was the conspiracy theorist, who always happened to be right. However, that doesn't take away from Scully's contribution to solving the unsolvable cases on The X-Files.
Audiences watched Scully try to talk some sense into Mulder for nine seasons on television and in two feature length films. However, the scientist always had her partner's back, even through alien invasions and mythological monsters.

Fans never could have guessed when they meet Carol that she would evolve into the unstoppable badass who slathered herself in zombie guts and rampaged through walkers, bad guys, and anything else between her and her friends.

Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons, from the HBO series Game of Thrones and George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series, is just as smart as she is beautiful. Targaryen believes that she is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, and will not stop until her family's claim is made.
What separates Targaryen from the many characters on the show who want to rule, is that she is actually kind, and desires to be a just and fair leader of her people.

Katniss somehow always manages to do the morally right thing in a futuristic dystopian world that is nearly devoid of morality.

The classic Jane Austen heroine and protagonist of Pride and Prejudice, has been depicted on screen numerous times, most notably by Keira Knightley in the 2005 film adaptation and by Jennifer Ehle in the 1995 BBC miniseries.

Lisbeth Salander (played by Rooney Mara in the American film) is an anti-social computer hacker with a bad attitude from Stieg Larsson's book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and David Fincher's thriller of the same name. Salander is covered in tattoos, dresses in a goth style, and has multiple body piercings. She certainly looks like a badass, and is even considered by some to be a sociopath.
But Salander is a fighter with a straight moral compass, and even though she's had a traumatic life filled with abuse, she is able to help uncover a murder mystery, using her expert computer skills.

Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) from Lost made a lot of mistakes before she boarded Oceanic Flight 815. When the plane crashed, Kate left her past behind, and became one of the show's few true heroes. She never turned down an opportunity to help the group.
Kate was smart, determined, and willing to sacrifice everything for the greater good.
