(#1) Chandler Bing
- Friends
It’s hard to remember a time when Chandler and Monica aren’t a couple. But this pairing basically comes out of nowhere. One episode of the show even features Monica joking that she could never date Chandler. Moreover, the two hook up in London, at Ross and Emily’s wedding. So while viewers are eager to see if Rachel stops the wedding, this fresh romance catches them totally by surprise. Could it be any more unexpected?
-
(#2) Mark Sloan
- Grey's Anatomy
Who would think that Little Grey and Sloan would become such a beloved couple in the Grey’s Anatomy universe? Especially since their relationship comes seemingly out of the blue. Lexie asks Mark to teach her about medical stuff. He resists, because she’s Meredith’s little sister and too young for him. But by then end of the episode, Lexie goes up to his hotel room, takes off her clothes, and says “Teach me.”
And then there's the whole tragic ending. We’re not crying, you’re crying.
-
(#3) April Ludgate
- Parks and Recreation
Andy and April's relationship is so obviously #goals. But at first, goofy man-child Andy and the perpetually sarcastic April feel like a weird pairing. She has a crush on him, and he's oblivious.
Then, they start dating – and get married within a month, which feels like a recipe for disaster. But it's not. Their love story ends up being an integral part of what makes Parks and Recreation so heartwarming.
-
(#4) Barney Stinson
- How I Met Your Mother
OK, so maybe you saw this coming, but probably not from episode 1. Barney's a player who seems unlikely to settle down, and Robin is all over Ted for a hot minute. It seems insane that these two could ever go beyond just hooking up and actually commit to each other. But commit they do – for a while. Too bad the writers really mess up the final season.
-
(#5) Camille Saroyan
- bones
While Bones occasionally gives fans a glimpse into Cam’s romantic life, it never really commits to the idea of having her in a serious relationship – until Season 8. That's when viewers unexpectedly find out she’s dating Arastoo Vaziri, one of Brennan's squinterns.
The relationship is surprising because it has basically no build-up. Also, it seems out of character for Cam to date someone who works for her. But love conquers all. Although these two have their fair share of hardship, they get their happily ever after.
-
(#6) James Wilson
- House
House’s main relationship throughout the show’s eight seasons revolves around House and Cuddy. But at one point another pairing happens that takes viewers completely by surprise. Amber joins House’s team in Season 4, hoping to score a permanent position. But since she and House are so alike, they develop sort of a love/hate dynamic. She gets fired, House hires some new fellows, the show moves on.
So it's unexpected to see her pop up again later in the season, this time as Wilson’s girlfriend. The two are extremely different, but somehow make it work. And by the end, they even provide one of the most compelling storylines in House’s history.
-
(#7) James "Sawyer" Ford
- Lost
It’s no secret that Lost has viewers confused for most of its run. But they probably don't expect to be blindsided by a romance – and a pretty compelling one at that.
For the first few seasons, it looks like Jack, Sawyer, and Kate will forever be trapped in a love triangle. Juliet is introduced, and the triangle became a quadrangle. Then, after a time jump, it's revealed that Sawyer and Juliet are happily together and loving every moment of it. It's an surprise pairing that works; the couple’s memorable kiss from Season 5 is still being talked about in select corners of the Internet.
-
(#8) Rick Grimes
- The Walking Dead
All these seasons in, The Walking Dead still finds ways to surprise its audience. And while that often involves some sort of gruesome death, in Season 6 it's romance that gets everyone talking.
Turns out, not even the Zombie Apocalypse can keep people apart. Rick and Michonne have chemistry from the moment they meet, but their relationship is a massive departure from the comics. And an inspired one, you could argue.
-
(#9) Clarke Walters
- The 100
During the first seasons of the show, viewers likely expect Clarke and Bellamy to become a thing. When she has to team up with Lexa, it looks like the two will have to work hard to overcome their differences.
But who would have thought these two would actually get together? They share a passionate kiss before Lexa’s betrayal, then eventually reunite and stay together right until Lexa’s tragic (and controversial) end.
-
(#10) Peggy Olson
- Mad Men
While Mad Men mostly focuses on Don Draper’s relationships, Peggy goes through her fair share of romantic entanglements during the show’s run as well. But who could have predicted that her work husband Stan would turn out to be her soulmate?
The creator of the show sure didn't, so don’t be too hard on yourself. While some argue that these two have been meant for each other from early days, other are still scratching their heads about how this happened. Whatever the case, we’re happy it did.
-
(#11) Blair Waldorf
- Gossip Girl
At the very beginning of Gossip Girl, it looks like Serena and Dan are endgame. Then there are Blair and Chuck, whose chemistry is the stuff of fairytales. That’s mainly why it was so unexpected to see Queen B paired up with Lonely Boy.
Granted, by that point in the series, Blair and Dan's relationship isn’t even close to the most far-fetched thing going on (remember the whole dowry nonsense?). They spend ages as enemies before eventually becoming friends and more, so it kind of makes sense. That’s probably why some fans are still mourning their untimely split.
-
(#12) Samantha Jones
Fans expect Samantha to hook up with all kinds of men during Sex and the City’s run. But a woman? That's new. And it's not just a hookup, either – Samantha embarks on a passionate, yet short-lived relationship with Maria. Leave it to Samantha to perpetually surprise the audience.
-
(#13) Rachel Berry
- Glee
Glee has a habit of surprising viewers with unexpected relationships. But the pairing of Puck and Rachel might be the most surprising of them all. At the beginning of the series, Rachel is the quintessential good girl, while Puck is a bit of a bully. They bond over being Jewish, and just like that, Puckleberry happens. Though their relationship is brief, they remain friends in the long-run.
-
(#14) Fez
- That '70s Show
By the time Season 8 of That ‘70s Show comes around, maybe you're rooting for Hyde and Jackie to figure things out. Or maybe you're still hoping for her to get back with Kelso. But you probably aren't expecting her to hook up with Fez.
The main problem? Jackie goes from looking down on Fez to realizing he has all the qualities she needs in a man in what seems like the blink of an eye. That’s probably why fans are still debating whether this pairing makes any kind of sense.
-
(#15) Spencer Hastings
- Pretty Little Liars
Pretty Little Liars debuts a hot new couple in Season 6. Spencer and Caleb go from acquaintances to friends to a little bit more. It seems like a natural progression, although a bit rushed. But given the fact that Caleb is Hanna’s ex-boyfriend and half of the beloved Haleb ship, it also feels like a surprising turn.
The couple eventually breaks up in Season 7, causing Haleb fans to cheer.
-
(#16) Hannibal Lecter
- Hannibal, AFI's 100 Years...100 Heroes & Villains
That's Hannibal, as in Hannibal Lecter. He's not exactly ideal dating material. Plus, Will and Alana seem like the more natural pairing during Season 1.
And then, Season 2 happens. While viewers eventually learn Hannibal isn't seeing Alana for the right reasons, it's still surprising to see him go through the motions with someone.
