  • (#1) Rue

How it happens: Tribute from District 1 (Marvel) spears her.

We all fell in love with sweet Rue from the first time we saw her. Marvel does a totally un-superhero thing and takes out a little girl. Katniss sings to the fading Rue and continues to honor the young girl by starting a revolution.

  • Finnick Odair on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#2) Finnick Odair

    How it happens: Lizard mutts.

Book fans have long known that Finnick wouldn’t make it to the end. As he makes his way up a ladder, he’s descended upon by mutts. Katniss’s reaction is our reaction. NOOOOOOOO!

  • Cinna on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#3) Cinna

How it happens: Capitol Peacekeepers do terrible things to him, probably.

Cinna has been waiting a long time to take down the Capitol and Katniss is his chance. He helps incite the revolution through his designs, and probably knows his ticket is going to get punched after he designs that Mockingjay dress.

  • Primrose Everdeen on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#4) Primrose Everdeen

How it happens: Sneak attack (and Gale, kind of).

As Prim rushes in as part of a medical team to help the wounded during the battle at the Capitol, she succumbs to an attack launched by rebels, including Gale. Katniss's heart breaks.

  • Mags on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#5) Mags

How it happens: She sacrifices herself by walking into the noxious fog.

Finnick needs to carry a wounded Peeta and Mags can't keep up. So to buy Finnick, Katniss, and Peeta time to get out, she bravely walks into the fog. The immediate cannon fire sounds off the quiet, brave demise of Mags, who took the place of a young girl from District 4.

  • (#6) District 11 Old Man Protestor

How it happens: Capitol Peacekeepers shoot him in the back of the head.

On the victory tour visit to District 11 - Rue and Thresh’s district - an old man raises his hand in the sign of solidarity and revolution and whistles the Mockingjay tune. That’s all it takes. The Peacekeepers drag him to the stage and shoot him in the head. We feel the loss of Rue and Thresh and the oppression of the people in this one scene, through this one character’s passing.

  • Thresh on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#7) Thresh

    How it happens: Mutts.

Thresh saves Katniss's life by taking Clove out. He totally gives us the chills when he says, “For Rue.”

  • (#8) Everyone Who Rebels In The Districts

    How it happens: Capitol Peacekeepers.

After Rue’s demise, Katniss honors the 12-year-old from District 11 with the three-fingered salute and mockingjay whistle to the sky, knowing District 11 is watching. This encourages them to revolt. The scene demonstrates how one small act can incite a revolution.

We don’t see anyone perish on screen, but we know that the Capitol is all about putting down protestors across Panem.

  • Wiress on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#9) Wiress

How it happens: Gloss slits her throat.

Wiress went through so much as a victor for District 3. When she is brought back for the Quarter Quell, she is not exactly all there, but she’s still plenty smart enough to figure out that the arena is a clock. This crucial piece of information saves Katniss and co. But alas, Wiress is slain by a guy named Gloss.

  • Lady Morphling on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#10) Lady Morphling

    How it happens: Monkeys.

The Morphling from District 6 saves Peeta from monstrous orange monkeys and is slashed across the neck. Peeta helps her leave this mortal coil by comforting her as she fades. He tells her to look at the sky, look at the colors. Tears.

  • Foxface on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#11) Foxface

    How it happens: Taking nightlock.

Either Foxface decides to opt out because her only option is to take out Katniss or Peeta or she doesn't know the berries are trouble. She’s very clever and has a real chance at winning the games. So why does she eat the berries?

  • Chaff on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#12) Chaff

How it happens: Brutus slays him.

A little bit wild, a lot flirty, and Haymitch’s drinking buddy, Chaff brings a certain swagger and humor to a cruel landscape.

  • (#13) Cato

How it happens: Mutts, with an assist by Katniss.

As Cato holds Peeta hostage and is probably about to take his life, mutts strike and take Cato down. Katniss mercifully shoots Cato with an arrow so he won’t be alive for the mutt buffet.

  • Seneca Crane on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#14) Seneca Crane

How it happens: Taking nightlock at the suggestion of President Snow.

After Gamemaker Crane makes the decision to allow two tributes to live, Katniss and Peeta (the winning tributes) then turn the tables on the games by planning to take nightlock. Crane is then led into a room, featuring a bowl of nightlock on a table.

We don’t see him perish, but this is President Snow’s way of saying, “You can opt out, or we can do this the hard way.”

  • (#15) Clove

How it happens: Thresh smashes her against the Cornucopia.

This is what you get for being a psycho Career who taunts Katniss about the loss of Rue. Thresh body-slams Clove to her demise.

  • Glimmer on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#16) Glimmer

How it happens: Multiple stings of tracker jackers (genetically modified bees) after Katniss saws a hive out of a tree and drops it on the sleeping Careers.

She's a snotty Career and a little too willing to take Katniss out, but we’re still kind of feeling bad about how she went. Good looking out, Rue.

  • Marvel on Random Saddest 'Hunger Games' Deaths

    (#17) Marvel

Thank you for stopping this machine, Katniss.
