The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a department of the Romanian government which is mainly responsible for foreign affairs. The current foreign minister, Titus Corlăţean, took office in August 2012. Romania pursues a friendly and peaceful foreign policy and advocates extensive opening to the outside world on the basis of safeguarding and developing its national interests. It joined NATO on 29 March 2004 and the European Union on 1 January 2007.
At present, Romania has established diplomatic relations with 182 countries, and adheres to the principles of priority of Europe and the United States, consideration of peripheral areas and importance of major powers, and regards the development of relations with China as its diplomatic strategy priority.
