About This Tool

Between 1756 and 1763, Britain and France fought a “seven-year war” in Canada, France lost the war, and the Paris Peace Treaty of 1763 officially made Canada a British colony. The word “Canada” was first used officially when Quebec was divided into the Upper Canada and Lower Canada colonies in 1791. 1841 was reunified as the Province of Canada. 1867, the Union of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, became Britain’s first self-governing territory. Since then, other provinces have joined the union. In 1926, Britain recognized Canada’s “equal status”, and Canada was granted diplomatic independence.
