  • Fawkes on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#1) Fawkes

    • Harry Potter

    Owner: Albus Dumbledore

    Species: Phoenix

Notable Skills: Fawkes is a highly intelligent bird. His tears have healing properties. He is immortal; although he periodically perishes by bursting into flames, he is then reborn from the ashes. Fawkes is immune to the gaze of a basilisk and can swallow a curse instead of perishing from it. Fawkes is also extremely strong and can apparate at will, taking people with him when he teleports to a new location. Fawkes's phoenix song can instill courage and calm in those who hear it.

Best Trait: Fawkes is extremely loyal and courageous, and is always willing to enter entanglements when he senses Dumbledore is in danger.

Worst Trait: He abandons the school after Dumbledore's demise, seeing no reason to stick around and fight Voldemort after the passing of his master. His abilities could be essential to Harry in later skirmishes, but Dumbledore's passing allows him to be a wild phoenix once again, which he promptly takes advantage of.

Most Memorable Moment: When Harry encounters Salazar Slytherin's basilisk, Fawkes blinds the serpent by pecking out its eyes. He then drops the Sorting Hat into Harry's lap, which reveals Godric Gryffindor's blade and allows Harry to slay the basilisk. When a fang pierces Harry's arm with basilisk venom, Fawkes uses his tears to heal the piercing and saves Harry's life. He then brings Tom Riddle's diary to Harry, allowing him to get rid of it for good. In short, Harry would never have survived the basilisk onslaught if not for Fawkes.

  • Hedwig on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#2) Hedwig

    • Harry Potter

    Owner: Harry Potter

    Species: Snowy owl

Notable Skills: Hedwig has an amplified sense of knowledge and understanding, as shown by her ability to carry out complex instructions. She's a skilled hunter and can catch her own food. She also carries Harry's mail to various locations and ensures it's delivered and replied to, per Harry's instructions. She doesn't need an address to deliver mail, just a name, and intuitively knows where someone is located and when they've moved.

Best Trait: Hedwig is very loyal to Harry and always looks out for his best interests.

Worst Trait: She's moody. Hedwig takes insults very seriously and gets noisily upset if she's locked in her cage for too long.

Most Memorable Moment: Riding with the group of seven Potters on Hagrid's motorcycle with Harry, she is struck by a curse. Although the curse was likely meant for one of her companions, she perishes instantly. Her demise greatly upsets Harry, who then has to dislodge the sidecar containing her remains. Harry is devastated by the loss of his beloved pet, first-ever birthday gift, and first friend at Hogwarts.

  • Buckbeak on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#3) Buckbeak

    • Harry Potter

    Owner: Rubeus Hagrid

    Species: Hippogriff

Notable Skills: Hippogriffs are half-bird and half-horse. These combined qualities make Buckbeak big and strong, and give him the ability to fly.

Best Trait: Once you earn Buckbeak's respect, he is very loyal. He'll fight to keep you safe from harm, provided you continue to treat him well.

Worst Trait: Buckbeak, like all hippogriffs, is a very proud animal. He doesn't like to be insulted. In fact, he requires total respect and deference during the first meeting; otherwise, you probably won't get anywhere close to him.

Most Memorable Moment: After Draco Malfoy insults Buckbeak, the hippogriff lunges at him and harms Draco's arm. He then receives a capital sentence, but Harry and Hermione use the Time-Turner to swoop in right before he is slayed and save him. Hermione and Harry then ride Buckbeak up to Flitwick's office, where they free Sirius Black and allow him to escape on Buckbeak's back.

  • Fang on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#4) Fang

    Owner: Rubeus Hagrid

    Species: Boarhound dog

Notable Skills: Fang can run away from danger very quickly, which he does often because he's quite cowardly despite his large size.

Best Trait: Although he's a coward, he does his best to defend his master. He runs away in fear if the confrontation gets too scary, but his intentions are good.

Worst Trait: He slobbers constantly, often soaking people in his spit while nudging them to pet him.

Most Memorable Moment: Fang truly cares for Hagrid. When Dolores Umbridge leads Ministry of Magic wizards to hurt Hagrid, Fang jumps in to defend him. In the process, he's hit by a stunning spell, which then ignites an angry response from Hagrid, who throws the responsible party far away and escapes with his stunned dog.

  • Crookshanks on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#5) Crookshanks

    • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter

    Owner: Hermione Granger

    Species: Cat

Notable Skills: Crookshanks has an uncanny ability to sense untrustworthy people and actions, even if those he's examining are transfigured at the time. He can solve problems on his own and expresses an almost human-like ability to understand what's going on around him.

Best Trait: He knows exactly who to trust and gives his affection only to those who deserve it. If he likes you, you should feel pretty special.

Worst Trait: He keeps to himself a little too much, making it hard for other people to understand his intentions. He can read people very well, but he doesn't do a lot to communicate his worries, which leaves everyone else in the dark.

Most Memorable Moment: In Prisoner of Azkaban, Crookshanks meets Sirius Black while he's in his Animagus form of a stray dog. Using his ability to sense a person's intentions, Crookshanks realizes who Sirius is and chooses to trust him. Crookshanks is able to communicate with Sirius and chooses to help him access the Hogwarts grounds by taking the passwords to Gryffindor Tower from Neville. After helping him all year long, Crookshanks develops a bond with Sirius and protects him in the Shrieking Shack. His intervention gives Lupin enough time to arrive, which ultimately leads to the reveal of Scabbers as Peter Pettigrew. His intervention not only saves Sirius's life, but also reveals Voldemort's right-hand man, moving the group one step closer in their fight to defeat the Dark Wizards.

  • Pigwidgeon on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#6) Pigwidgeon

    Owner: Ron Weasley

    Species: Owl

Notable Skills: Pigwidgeon, also known as Pig, is given to Ron by Sirius Black after the group finds out the truth about Scabbers. He delivers letters for Ron and he's very, very tiny - small enough to fit in the palm of someone's hand.

Best Trait: Pig is always super excited to deliver letters. He loves attention and jumps at the chance to show off for Ron by completing his task, even though many of the letters are too big for his small frame to handle. He has tons of energy and is eager to please, which is as endearing as it is annoying.

Worst Trait: Pig is hyper, loud, and generally bothersome. He annoys Hedwig and the other Weasley owls, and Ron even admits Pig annoys him, as well.

Most Memorable Moment: While Harry communicates with Sirius during the Triwizard Tournament, he decides to use Pig as his messenger instead of Hedwig. Not only does this maintain the secrecy of his communication, but it also allows him to keep Hedwig safe from harm while the Ministry of Magic hunts Sirius.

  • Norbert on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#7) Norbert

    Owner: Rubeus Hagrid

    Species: Norwegian ridgeback dragon

Notable Skills: As a dragon, Norbert has the typical dragon skills. He (later on Norbert is found to be a "she," but Norbert is a "he" to Hagrid) can breathe fire, has venomous fangs, can fly, and possesses a generally fierce and aggressive personality.

Best Trait: While in Hagrid's care, Norbert is just a baby. He's cute and endearing, especially due to his small size.

Worst Trait: Norbert is aggressive and uncontrollable. Granted, he's a baby in a new environment, but he bites one too many people to be considered genuinely cute.

Most Memorable Moment: Norbert's most notable moment has to be his birth. After winning the dragon egg from Quirrell, Hagrid keeps it warm by the fire until it hatches. Norbert emerges as a miniature, handheld version of a dragon. He stumbles around the table, blows fire at his new friends, and nips at people. The cutest part, however, is Hagrid's reaction. Excited to finally have a dragon, Hagrid refers to himself as Norbert's "mummy" and generally acts like a proud new mama.

  • Arnold on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#8) Arnold

    Owner: Ginny Weasley

    Species: Pygmy Puff

Notable Skills: As a pygmy puff, Arnold will eat anything and everything.

Best Trait: Pygmy puffs are bred by Fred and George Weasley primarily to be cute. Fluffy little balls in shades of pink and purple, they are both affectionate and adorable. Meant to be a cute companion, they certainly live up to the task.

Worst Trait: Arnold doesn't really do anything. He's cute and cuddly, but he doesn't have any functional skills that would help the young wizards in any of their struggles.

Most Memorable Moment: Ginny's pygmy puff sits on her shoulder, content to simply spend time with her and travel wherever she needs to go. He's a committed, affectionate pet, even if he's not particularly useful.

  • Fluffy on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#9) Fluffy

    Owner: Rubeus Hagrid

    Species: Three-headed dog

Notable Skills: In contrast to his name, Fluffy is actually a fierce and terrifying creature. He's enormous and has three vicious heads complete with razor-sharp teeth.

Best Trait: Fluffy is somewhat docile around certain people. Hagrid expresses a close bond with him, and the two are friendly enough to get Fluffy to the third corridor, where he guards the Sorcerer's Stone. Fluffy has a tame side; it just takes a while to connect with him.

Worst Trait: Fluffy falls asleep almost immediately when he hears music, and stays asleep for the duration the music plays. While it's a good trick to calm him, it also means he's vulnerable as a guard dog.

Most Memorable Moment: Dumbledore borrows Fluffy from Hagrid and commissions him to guard the Sorcerer's Stone. When Harry, Ron, and Hermione learn that someone sneaked past Fluffy to find the stone, they decide to go after the culprit. When they arrive at Fluffy's location, they notice an enchanted harp at his feet playing music that keeps him asleep. As they try to sneak around him, the enchantment wears off, but Harry puts Fluffy right back to sleep by playing the flute.

  • Errol on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#10) Errol

    Owner: Weasley family

    Species: Great gray owl

Notable Skills: As the family owl, Errol delivers letters and packages for the Weasleys. By the time Errol is introduced to Harry, he's old and his skills are starting to fail.

Best Trait: Even in old age, Errol always tries to do his best. He delivers letters and packages without complaint and tries to do his duties successfully, even though physical limitations mean he's often unable to do so.

Worst Trait: Errol has poor eyesight. He's constantly running into objects while he's flying, which impedes his ability to deliver messages in a timely manner.

Most Memorable Moment: After Ron and Harry take Arthur Weasley's car to make their way to Hogwarts, Errol delivers Molly Weasley's Howler. Ron opens it in the Great Hall, allowing all the students to listen in on his mother's angry rant about his poor decision.

  • Hermes on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#11) Hermes

    Owner: Percy Weasley

    Species: Screech owl

Notable Skills: Like most owls, Hermes acts as Percy's messenger, delivering letters and packages wherever they need to go.

Best Trait: He's a faithful owl with no real problems. He does his job well, unlike the other Weasley family owls, Errol and Pigwidgeon.

Worst Trait: He gets annoyed by Pig's antics, showing he may not be the most patient bird in the world.

Most Memorable Moment: When Dolores Umbridge takes over Hogwarts, Percy sides with the Ministry of Magic in the ensuing struggle for dominance. He uses Hermes to send a letter to Ron, stating Ron shouldn't trust Harry Potter anymore and the right thing to do is to side with the Ministry.

  • Mrs. Norris on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#12) Mrs. Norris

    • Harry Potter

    Owner: Argus Filch

    Species: Cat

Notable Skills: Mrs. Norris has a strong connection to Filch, as well as a heightened intelligence. She senses when students are misbehaving and will often fetch her master to catch them in the act. She also seems to communicate with Filch, though it's never clear whether they can actually talk or whether it's a sort of physic connection.

Best Trait: She's pretty much the only living thing that likes Argus Filch and vice versa. Even though she's annoying, she gives the grumpy and lonely Filch a pal to hang out with.

Worst Trait: She's a total tattletale. She stalks the school just hoping to find students misbehaving so she can report their actions to Filch.

Most Memorable Moment: Mrs. Norris is the first target of the basilisk when the Chamber of Secrets is reopened. She spots its reflection in a puddle of water and freezes. She's then hung by her tail from a torch bracket by Ginny Weasley, who's possessed by Tom Riddle. When Filch discovers her, he's completely devastated. He immediately accuses Harry of freezing her and cradles her remains in his arms, clearly upset over the loss of his only friend.

  • Francis on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#13) Francis

    Owner: Horace Slughorn

    Species: Fish

Notable Skills: Francis starts his life as a lily petal that Lily Potter transfigures to become a fish as a gift for Professor Slughorn.

Best Trait: He brings great joy to Professor Slughorn.

Worst Trait: He is connected to Lily, creating double sadness for Slughorn when the fish disappears.

Most Memorable Moment: Slughorn tells the story of Lily Potter's gift to him during her time at Hogwarts. He reveals that Lily set a petal to float inside a bowl of water. When Slughorn walked in, the petal fell and turned into a fish. Slughorn kept the fish for many years, only to find that one day the fish had disappeared. Francis's disappearance was caused by Lily's demise at the hands of Voldemort, as the fish was tied to her life.

  • Nagini on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#14) Nagini

    • Harry Potter

    Owner: Voldemort

    Species: Snake

Notable Skills: Nagini can speak Parseltongue and is extremely skilled in combat. She possesses dexterity, speed, and strength, making her a worthy foe against witches, wizards, mortals, and basically anyone else. Nagini is also venomous. Her venom prevents healing and can lead to fatal blood loss if she strikes in the right place. Lastly, Nagini has a strong telepathic bond with Voldemort, a skill that develops when he makes her one of his Horcruxes.

Best Trait: As an evil snake under Voldemort's command, Nagini doesn't have many good traits. Her one potentially redeeming factor is her loyalty to her master, though that faithfulness is marred by the fact she's on the wrong side.

Worst Trait: Nagini's worst trait is she's bound to Voldemort. Her relationship to him makes her angry and dangerous, creating a scary foe most people want to avoid.

Most Memorable Moment: In Voldemort's struggle to find the Elder Wand, he summons Severus Snape to the Shrieking Shack. He wrongly believes Snape is the master of the wand, so he has Nagini bite his neck by expanding her protective cage over Snape. When Voldemort removes the cage, Snape falls to the ground with blood gushing from his neck. Before he perishes, he releases his memories to Harry, who then finds out about Snape's true loyalties and lifelong love for Lily Potter.

  • Matey on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#15) Matey

    Owner: Aberforth

    Species: Goat

Notable Skills: Matey likes to run away from Aberforth and cause disruption in the Hog's Head pub.

Best Trait: He's a cute little goat who distracts Aberforth from the meeting of Dumbledore's Army.

Worst Trait: He sits inside the bar, which probably doesn't smell too great for the Hog's Head customers.

Most Memorable Moment: When Harry, Ron, and Hermione enter the Hog's Head pub for the first meeting of Dumbledore's Army, Matey darts out from behind the bar counter. Aberforth follows him into another room, yelling at him to come back.

  • Trevor on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#16) Trevor

    Owner: Neville Longbottom

    Species: Toad

Notable Skills: Neville is always losing Trevor, but that also implies Trevor is constantly running away. He's an expert at hiding from his owner. He's so good, in fact, that he eventually disappears from the Harry Potter stories altogether.

Best Trait: He's the reason Hermione meets Ron and Harry on the first Hogwarts train. When he runs away from Neville, Hermione joins the search, running into her two new best friends along the way.

Worst Trait: He's always running away from Neville, forcing the poor kid to spend most of his time looking for him.

Most Memorable Moment: When Neville tests a shrinking solution during Professor Snape's class, he uses Trevor as his subject. Snape warns the solution might be poisonous if made incorrectly, but Neville makes Trevor drink it anyway. Much to Neville's relief, Trevor shrinks into a tadpole. Upset by his success, Snape deducts five points form Gryffindor because Hermione helped Neville with his potion.

  • Blinky on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#17) Blinky

    Owner: Lavender Brown

    Species: Rabbit

Notable Skills: Blinky is a very normal rabbit who is young, healthy, and full of life.

Best Trait: He brings lots of joy to Lavender and her family.

Worst Trait: He's not the most careful rabbit and doesn't stay close enough to home.

Most Memorable Moment: When Sybill Trelawney joins the staff at Hogwarts, she tells Lavender Brown the thing she's dreading will happen on October 16. On that exact day, Lavender receives news that her pet rabbit was slain by a fox the previous day. She insists Professor Trelawney predicted the event accurately, but Hermione points out that the rabbit actually passed the day before, thereby discrediting Sybill's prediction.

  • Aragog on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#18) Aragog

    • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

    Owner: Rubeus Hagrid

    Species: Acromantula

Notable Skills: Aragog is essentially a giant spider with an 18-foot leg span. For reference, that's about the size of a small elephant. Aragog can communicate with humans and has a taste for human flesh. He also has a very valuable and toxic venom that's prized in the Wizarding World.

Best Trait: Although it is his first instinct to take down humans, Aragog never harms a human in his life out of respect for Hagrid. He denies his natural instincts out of gratitude for one human, proving he's loyal and reliable.

Worst Trait: He allows his sons and daughters to take down any human except Hagrid. It seems his loyalty will extend only so far.

Most Memorable Moment: While searching for Salazar Slytherin's monster, Ron and Harry take Hagrid's advice and follow the spiders. This leads them to Aragog's lair. Here they learn about Hagrid's history with Aragog, including the fact Aragog was once dubbed Slytherin's monster and Hagrid was assumed to be the heir. Hagrid helped Aragog escape, which is why he was expelled from Hogwarts. After Aragog tells Harry and Ron the story, he also explains he will not deny his children fresh meat. Harry and Ron barely escape when the enchanted flying car rescues them from the venomous monsters.

  • Ripper on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#19) Ripper

Owner: Marge Dursley (AKA Aunt Marge)

    Species: Bulldog

Notable Skills: Ripper is adept at growling and guarding Aunt Marge.

Best Trait: He's loyal to Aunt Marge.

Worst Trait: He's loyal to Aunt Marge, and not nice to others.

Most Memorable Moment: When Harry accidentally inflates Aunt Marge while she and Ripper are visiting the Dursleys, Ripper bites Vernon Dursley's leg as he in turn attempts to grab his sister's leg before she floats away.

  • Scabbers on Random Harry Potter Pets

    (#20) Scabbers

    Owner: Ron Weasley

    Species: Rat

Notable Skills: Although rats of his type are only expected to live for three years, Scabbers lives with the Weasleys for 12. His grand life expectancy is probably due to the fact that he's not a rat at all, but rather Peter Pettigrew in disguise. As a rat, Scabbers is fairly uninteresting. Ron claims that all he does is eat and sleep.

Best Trait: He sticks by the Weasley family for years, giving them a convenient pet when they can't really afford one.

Worst Trait: He's actually Petter Pettigrew, a loyal follower of Voldemort, a total coward, and a general bad guy.

Most Memorable Moment: When Sirius Black escapes from behind bars, Scabbers grows uncomfortable with his current situation. He's scared Sirius will find him and avenge the Potters, who Peter helped to slay. He starts to thin and bald from the stress, causing lots of worry for Ron. Eventually, he fakes his own slaying. He bites himself and leaves a trail of blood, convincing Ron that Crookshanks ate him.
