• 

  (#1) Pain

  • Naruto Shippūden

  History: Pain - formerly known as Nagato - hails from Amegakure. He, Konan, and Yahiko survived a war with a little help from Jiraiya, then started the Akatsuki with the aim of creating peace. After Yahiko's violent demise, Pain decided that peaceful goals were foolish, and turned the Akatsuki into a villainous organization. 

  Jutsu: Because he has a Rinnegan, Pain is able to use a wide range of jutsu with relative ease. The most noteworthy is the Six Paths of Pain, which allows him to manipulate six different bodies simultaneously in battle. Each has its own incredible abilities - for example, the Naraka Path can force targets to tell the truth, as well as repair damage. He also possesses the Outer Path, which allows him to control life to the point where he can restore it. 

  Their Fate: After staging an attack on Konoha, Pain is eventually defeated by Naruto, who decides to spare his life based on the teachings of their master, Jiraiya. He persuades Pain that his attack will not lead to peace, and convinces him to see the error of his ways. Pain gives his life in order to restore those who he'd previously destroyed.

  (#2) Itachi Uchiha

  • Naruto Shippūden, Naruto, Ninja World

  History: Once a high-ranking Konoha ninja, Itachi left home after Danzo manipulated him into annihilating his own clan. His goal is to have Sasuke defeat him in order to awaken his mangekyo sharingan and ensure that he's strong enough to defeat any enemies he might face.

  Jutsu: Itachi's mangekyo sharingan gives him a panoply of impressive abilities. The most noteworthy are Susano-o - a defensive ability that summons an impenetrable skeleton, Amaterasu - black fire that never goes out, and Tsukuyomi - a genjutsu ability that can create vivid hallucinations. He can even use the clan's most powerful jutsu, Izanami and  Izanagi

  Their Fate: Itachi meets his end just as he hoped to - at the hands of his younger brother Sasuke. Well, his mangekyo-induced illness also probably had something to do with it. Either way, he passes away after a dramatic battle, without revealing his true motives to Sasuke. Later, he's resurrected using Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation and is able to fight by his brother's side.

  (#3) Obito Uchiha

  • Naruto Shippūden

  History: Known as Tobi until his identity is revealed, Obito Uchiha has been acting under Madara's will. That's because when he was a child, his body was crushed by falling rocks, and his ancient ancestor nursed him back to health - and used the opportunity to persuade him that the only way towards a peaceful world was to brainwash the populace and steal their chakra. 

  Jutsu: Obito's signature ability is Kamui, which allows him to move from one dimension to another. Because he uses his mangekyo sharingan to do this, Kakashi possesses the same ability to a limited degree. When he becomes the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki, he gains even more abilities, such as the power to use Truth-Seeking Balls.

  Their Fate: Like Pain, Obito realizes the error of his ways through Naruto's help. However, Obito's path to redemption won't be as easy, because Madara isn't repenting at all, and there's still Kaguya and Black Zetsu to deal with. However, he is able to heal several people before he passes away, and afterwards he's able to send his spirit to inhabit Kakashi and help him fight before he finally joins Rin in the afterlife.

  (#4) Orochimaru

  • Naruto, Naruto Shippūden, Naruto Shippuden the Movie: Bonds, Ninja World

  History: Orochimaru was only in the Akatsuki briefly - he kept trying to steal other member's bodies, so he wasn't exactly welcome. His goal is to become immortal so that has the time to learn every jutsu, a goal he pursues through extensive unethical experiments. 

  Jutsu: Orochimaru's most unique jutsu is Living Corpse Reincarnation, which allows him to transfer his consciousness from one body to another, prolonging his lifespan. He accomplished this with serious body modifications that basically let him break down into thousands of poisonous snakes. He can summon snakes to fight for him in battle, revive corpses, and use Curse Sealing jutsu to control others.

  Their Fate: Orochimaru is actually one of the only members of the Akatsuki who survives the series - which kind of makes sense since his whole thing is reviving himself over and over again. In Boruto, he is a defanged version of himself. Still running experiments, but experiments that aren't nearly as brutal as the ones he used to do, and focusing on raising his son Mitsuki.

  (#5) Kisame Hoshigaki

  • Naruto, Naruto Shippūden

  History: At first, Kisame Hoshigaki worked for the Cypher Division of Kirigakure. His commander, Fuguki Suikazan, was a member of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. He once eliminated all of his fellow cyphers are Fuguki's direction in order to prevent information from leaking - but later he found out that Fuguki himself was selling info. He took Fuguki's life - and his sword - and was commended for doing so. Still, he felt disillusioned by a life of lies, which led him to defect and join the Akatsuki.

  Jutsu: Kisame's primary abilities involve his sword, Samehada. He can not only use it as a blunt weapon, he can also fuse with it. He also uses a variety of nature release techniques, specializing in water-based ones like Water Prison and Water Release: A Thousand Feeding Sharks. He can also summon sharks to help him in battle.

  Their Fate: Kisame's life ends in an unexpectedly honorable way. In order to prevent Aoba from reading his mind and acquiring Akatsuki secrets, he trapped himself using his water prison technique, then summoned a group of sharks that he allowed to consume him. In the end, he wanted to stand up for his principles.

  (#6) Konan

  • Naruto Shippūden

  History: Konan was a war orphan in Amegakure who grew up alongside Yahiko and Nagato. The three trained under Jiraiya for a short time before starting the Akatsuki together. It was a originally a peace-keeping organization, but that changed upon Yahiko's passing. Konan's goal is to protect Nagato at all costs.

  Jutsu: Konan's most noteworthy ability is Paper Ninjutsu, which allows her to transform her body and her clothes into sheets of paper that she can control. She can imbue the paper with chakra, allowing her to use it for both defensive and offensive purposes.

  Their Fate: After Pain's defeat, Konan attempted to leave the Akatsuki. She might have gone on to live a peaceful life, but Obito went after her. He disposed of her after a violent battle, and stole Nagato's Rinnegan eyes that she'd been hanging onto.

  (#7) Kakuzu

  • Naruto Shippūden

  History: Originally an S-rank shinobi of Takigakure, Kakuzu grew to despise his fellow villagers after he failed a mission and was treated harshly afterwards. He ended up fleeing the village, slaying the elders and stealing the town's most prized jutsu. After that, he made a living on the black market before ultimately joining the Akatsuki.

  Jutsu: Kakuzu's body is put together in a rather unique way. He has thick grey tendrils called Earth Grudge Fear woven throughout his body, which he can use to separate and reattach body parts, as well as to attack and defend. What's more, he has four different hearts and masks corresponding to different elemental release types, giving him both extra powers and extra lives.

  Their Fate: Kakuzu was finished off in a battle where he faced off against Team 10 and Team 7. It was a difficult battle, as they had to destroy multiple hearts in order to defeat him, but in the end Naruto managed to get him with a Rasenshuriken. He would later be revived, like many of the other Akatsuki members, and then defeated by Darui, Izumo, Choji, Tenten, and Kotetsu.

  (#8) Sasori

  • Naruto Shippūden

  History: Sasori was once an S-rank Shinobi from Sunagakure's Puppet Brigade. As a child, he lost his parents at the hands of Sakumo Hatake. His grandmother introduced him to puppetry to distract him, but he quickly got bored with the puppets that looked like his parents and moved on to making puppets that could fight. He also started using them against people like the Third Kazekage, who he turned into a puppet for his own use.  

  Jutsu: Sasori is a puppet master who not only transformed his own body into a puppet, he also does the same to other people, using still living bodies as puppets. He installs both weapons and poisons in his puppets. Because his body is mostly inorganic, he's nearly invulnerable. 

  Their Fate: Sasori battled against Chiyo and Sakura. While he put up a great fight, he was ultimately defeated when Chiyo used the puppets who resembled his parents to stab him with a poison blade. He passes away in the puppet's embrace, but not before watching Chiyo sacrifice herself to save Sakura, who had been poisoned.

  (#9) Deidara

  History: Deidara was once an Iwagakure ninja who served under Onoki. He quickly grew bored with his regimented life, and decided to leave the service in order to pursue his explosion-themed art. Eventually, the Akatsuki recruited him by force. He was resistant at first, but one he saw how powerful (and artistically gorgeous) Itachi was, he joined without complaint.

  Jutsu: Deidara's most prominent ability is his kekkei genkai, Explosion Release. By combining earth and lightning chakra natures, he can create explosions with his chakra. By using the mouths on his hands and on his chest, he can create clay. He combines these two abilities to produce explosive clay statues, which he considers to be both exceptionally powerful and artistically important.

  Their Fate: In a last-ditch effort to defeat Sasuke, Deidara transforms himself into a bomb. His self-sacrifice turns out to be completely pointless, since Sasuke is able to summon Manda and use him as a shield. Later, Deidara is resurrected using Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation by Kabuto, and he fights for a brief time in the Fourth Shinobi World War.

  (#10) Hidan

  • Naruto Shippūden

  History: Hidan is from Yugakure, a village that put aside military concerns in favor of pacificism. As a follower of Jashin, Hidan was in favor of violence and and warfare, and ended up defecting when he couldn't persuade the government to see things his way.
  
  Jutsu: As a practitioner of Jashinism, Hidan is the Jashin Ritual and Curse, which allows him to turn himself into a living voodoo doll - all damage done to him is done to the one who inflicts it. He's also immortal, which is part of what allows him to take so much damage in the first place.

  Their Fate: After a battle with Team 10 and Team 7, Shikamaru Nara lured Hidan into the Nara Forest, where he's laid an intricate trap for him. Shikamaru ends up decapitating him and trapping him in a hole full of explosive tags. Because he's immortal, he'll be there for eternity.

  (#11) Zetsu

  • Naruto Shippūden

  History: Zetsu is actually two people - Black Zetsu and White Zetsu. Black Zetsu was created by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, and is essentially the physical manifestation of her will. White Zetsu was one the early victims of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's Infinite Tsukuyomi, and was pulled out of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path in order to fuse with Black Zetsu and some DNA from Hashirama Senju.

  Jutsu: Black Zetsu and White Zetsu have a wide range of abilities, many of which are derived from other people: for example, Hashirama's cells allow them to use Wood Release. They also have individual abilities, such as the ability to separate into two distinct bodies (and in Black Zetsu's case control whoever he attaches to), use telepathy, and more. Their signature ability is Mayfly, which lets them travel quickly by merging with the ground.

  Their Fate: During the 4th Shinobi War, Sasuke used Zetsu to test out his Eternal Mangekyo, stabbing him with a blade formed by Amaterasu. As for Black Zetsu, Naruto seals both him and his mother Kaguya into a Satellite, trapping them there for eternity.

  (#12) Juzo Biwa

  History: Juzo Biwa was Itachi's first partner in the Akatsuki. Like Kisame, he's from the village of Kirigakure, where he was a member of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. One of his most well-known battles was fought against Might Duy, Guy's father.

  Jutsu: As a former member of the Akatsuki, Juzo's abilities aren't quite as clear as the other members. His primary fighting style involves his sword, the Kubikiribōchō. He's also capable of using water release, and has defensive abilities strong enough to survive Duy's Eight Gates Released Formation.

  Their Fate: While on a mission in Kirigakure, Jūzō and Itachi end up in combat with a team of hunters led by Yagura. While they're able to easily dispatch of most of them, Yagura launches a Tailed Beast Ball at Juzo that spells the end of his life. Juzo is upset to expire in the nation he hates. Before he does, Itachi makes sure he's holding his beloved sword.
