  • Hans Landa on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#1) Hans Landa

    • Inglourious Basterds

The inherent wickedness of Hans Landa doesn't merely come from him being a member of the SS, though that plays a significant part in it. His similarity to Satan extends to his willingness to betray those who believe in him. By the end of Inglourious Basterds, Landa realizes the Allies are going to win. Rather than go down with the ship, so to speak, he makes a deal with Aldo Raine in exchange for immunity.

Landa ensures his safety by betraying those who trust him.

  • Vidal on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#2) Vidal

    • Pan's Labyrinth

As the stepfather of Ofelia, Captain Vidal is both a fairytale monster and a captain of the Falange, a Spanish nationalist regime that attempts to force Spanish Catholic authoritarianism on the country's people. In Pan's Labyrinth, Vidal is draped in an immaculate, dictatorial costume which makes him resemble a bespoke Devil, and he's intensely physical in a way that's hard to watch.

Like the most famous depictions of Satan, Vidal's monstrousness is all internal. If you look only at his features, he appears as a perfectly manicured, well-to-do man. You'd never know the darkness that exists inside him.

  • Nurse Ratched on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#3) Nurse Ratched

    • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is cold and indifferent about those seeking her help. Consumed by the minor amount of power she's given as head nurse, Ratched refuses to empathize with her patients and instead humiliates them into following her orders.

Ratched is quick to dismiss those who step out of line or displease her; she even goes so far as to lobotomize a ward who continues to flout her rule. She takes what she wants, when she wants it, and does not hesitate to harm the powerless people put in her care.

Like Ratched, Satan is said to care only for himself and his power.

  • Louis Bloom From 'Nightcrawler'  on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#4) Louis Bloom From 'Nightcrawler'

In Nightcrawler, Louis Bloom is whomever he needs to be to get what he wants. Like Satan, he uses underhanded deals to feed his desires. If someone doesn't follow through on the arrangement, or if he feels as though he's been wronged, Bloom doesn't hesitate to relay swift, painful consequences.

Throughout the film, Bloom traps characters in circumstances that require them to sacrifice their comfort for money and power. He takes equipment, pressures a news director into a physical relationship, and puts people in danger, all so he can continue to grow his financial standing.

Louis Bloom isn't worried about doing unto others as they would do unto him. Instead, he takes what he wants before someone else can grab it.

  • Frank Booth on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#5) Frank Booth

If any character in film crawled directly out of Hell, it's Blue Velvet's Frank Booth. In David Lynch's standout film, Booth is a small-time underworld boss from North Carolina who bends people to his will through force and coercion. If you're around Booth, you do what he wants you to do; and if you disagree with him, you may not exist much longer.

Like Satan, Booth's exterior is handsome and charming, but his internal goals are against the betterment of those around him. He seeks to control, and as the film progresses, Booth's wickedness escalates until he's finally put out of his misery.

  • Mark Zuckerberg on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#6) Mark Zuckerberg

    • The Social Network

The Social Network's version of Mark Zuckerberg is a young man whose quest for greatness puts him at odds with everyone he knows and loves. As he breaks off from Harvard to focus on building Facebook, he brings along a small group of dreamers, before ditching them once he gains fortune and fame.

Despite people continually trying to bring the Facebook founder down, he always outwits and out-thinks them, all while taking particular glee in making their lives a little bit worse. No one in this film is "good," but this portrayal of Zuck paints him as a figure best described as devilish.

  • Anakin Skywalker From 'Star Wars'  on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

(#7) Anakin Skywalker From 'Star Wars'

The Devil begins his life working for God as one of the main angels of Heaven. Things go south when the two wind up on opposing sides after God decides to create the human race. Satan turns dark and goes to battle with the angels before taking dominion over Hell.

The story of Satan's fall from grace essentially has the major bullet points of Anakin Skywalker's turn towards the dark side. Anakin starts his life as a sweet little pod racer who's strong with the Force, but he slowly succumbs to the pull of the Sith. By the time the Clone Wars break out, he's well on his way to being one of the major monsters in a galaxy far, far away.

As far as characters who might as well be Satan go, Anakin Skywalker has it all: the look, the backstory, the pride, and even the special powers.

  • The Duke Brothers From 'Trading Places'  on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

(#8) The Duke Brothers From 'Trading Places'

What's not devilish about two old men who make bets with each other that upset the lives of their friends and colleagues? While trying to add to the immense amount of money they already have, Trading Places' Duke brothers dismiss one of their brightest employees, upending his life in the process, and put a homeless man in his place - all over a conversation about nature versus nurture.

It's clear the Duke brothers see everyone around them as lesser beings for them to toy with. They are anything but divine, but they see themselves as such because of their vast amounts of wealth.

  • Andrew Detmer on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#9) Andrew Detmer

    • Chronicle

Chronicle is the classic tale of young people who are gifted with mysterious powers and tasked with choosing how they'll use their newfound gifts. Andrew Detmer is a high school student who's shunned by his classmates, and as his powers grow, so do his anger and quest for attention.

Detmer goes from just wanting people to like him to offing one of his best friends with a bolt of lightning - before wiping out the city of Seattle with his mind. It's clear from the moment he receives a small amount of power that he's altered, an analog for the rush of energy Satan likely feels when he first challenges God

  • T-1000 on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#10) T-1000

    • Wayne's World, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Last Action Hero

While Terminator 2's T-1000 doesn't have any feelings or desires beyond wanting to know if people have seen John Connor, it does have some devilish tendencies. There's nothing that can stop this liquid monster from accomplishing its goal (aside from molten steel, of course, because even the Devil has a weakness).

T-1000's goal is to wipe out humanity by offing a teenage John Connor. T-1000's parallels to Satan are even more apparent considering its nemesis is T-800, a cyborg that gives its life so humanity can thrive.

  • Tyler Durden on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#11) Tyler Durden

    • Fight Club

That voice inside your head, the one you trust even when you shouldn't, is known as an intrusive thought. But in fiction, it can be a message from the Devil himself. In Fight Club, Tyler Durden is an incarnation of the intrusive thought. He swaggers and entices the film's narrator (most commonly referred to as "Jack") into complying with his most basic desires, before attempting to shape the world in his image.

Satan, as the intrusive thought, convinces a person they're making the best, most practical decisions. Instead, they're just following his diabolical plan, which will ultimately bring them to their knees. As fun as it can be to trust our innermost Tyler Durden from time to time, it's probably best to keep that voice at bay.

  • Tony Montana on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#12) Tony Montana

    • Scarface

As Milton writes in Paradise Lost: "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven," and Tony Montana's Miami in Scarface is certainly not Heaven. Wannabe dealers are being chopped up with chainsaws, and everything is for the taking if you're depraved enough to reach out and grab it.

Montana sees the glitz and glamour of the coke era and pushes everyone out of his way until he's the king of the underworld. When he witnesses the opulence on display at kingpin Frank Lopez's mansion, Montana doesn't just model his lifestyle after Lopez, he moves Lopez out of the picture permanently and sets up shop in his home.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a character who's more in line with the modern interpretation of Satan than this underworld leader.

  • Diana Christensen on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#13) Diana Christensen

    • Network

Satan doesn't always need to be at the forefront of a movement, leading it as a bright northern star. In many cases Satan works behind the scenes, guiding pieces like an expert chess player. When Network's Diana Christensen sees the kind of attention Howard Beale receives when he goes off script and loses his mind on-air, she coaxes her bosses into "developing" Beale's rants, pushing the anchor off the deep end.

When Christensen isn't slowly driving someone out of their wits, she's helping a group of notorious offenders via the magic of network television and carrying on a relationship with her married boss. As everyone she touches crumbles, Christensen moves on to bigger ratings.

Working with Christensen is akin to making a deal with the Devil because while she may make someone a star, she will just as quickly ruin their life.

  • Jordan Belfort on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#14) Jordan Belfort

    • The Wolf of Wall Street

Throughout The Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort takes advantage of every loophole, technicality, and work-around he can find to make himself as rich as possible. Belfort doesn't think what he's doing is bad, but he knows it's underhanded and wants to get what he can before the law realizes what's happening.

Belfort's proclivity towards theft isn't the most devilish thing about him; instead, it's his innate ability to inspire people to follow in his footsteps. While he has friends, like Donnie Azoff, who go along with his plans, he also has a legion of money-hungry white collar Wall Street types who blindly accept his beliefs.

The Devil himself is notoriously charming and often procures followers by convincing them he knows what's best.

  • Begbie on Random Characters You Never Realized Are Basically Satan

    (#15) Begbie

    • Trainspotting

In Trainspotting, Begbie is initially a welcome onscreen presence, but he devolves into a man who seeks out destruction just for the sake of it. The only reason he seems to hang around a group of friends who are in a constant stupor is because of the control he can exert over their dazed minds.

Begbie is fun and kooky at first, and he creates scenes that make the people in his inner circle feel alive. By the end of the film, however, he's trying to cause trouble wherever he goes. He even provokes conflicts with random pub-goers over a glass he threw.

Like Satan, Begbie makes people feel they're the coolest and most important person in the world - before throwing them into terrible situations with no positive solutions.
