  • 2015 3.0 CSL Hommage on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#1) 2015 3.0 CSL Hommage

The original BMW M3 CSL was a legend in its own time; a bizarre, over-the-top track monster with so many wings, fins and spoilers that Bruce Wayne might have called it "a bit much." The 2015 Hommage concept car isn't quite that crazy, but its certainly ostentatious enough to stand out in a crowd. BMW should be so wise as to put this car on the road.
  • 2010 GT Student Design Study on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

(#2) 2010 GT Student Design Study

Technically, this futuristicBMW concept car isn't even from BMW; it's a computer-rendered design study from an Iranian design student named Emile Baddal. First, credit goes to Emile for the amazing renders; the detail is so realistic here, it looks like it pulled up outside your window. But far more credit goes to the incredible design, making anyone wish it had actually been produced.
  • 2013 Vision Gran Turismo on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#3) 2013 Vision Gran Turismo

This concept stands apart for being the only car on this list you could actually drive. Yes, you, for a lot less than you think. Just go buy a PlayStation 4 and a copy of the latest Gran Turismo. That's like, half the cost of a set of tires for an M3! All right, you won't be able to drive it to work or anything, but this legit BMW "digital" concept car could still be yours today.
  • 2016 2002 Hommage on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#4) 2016 2002 Hommage

This is BMW's latest great concept car, and it might actually stand a chance of going into some kind of production. Essentially, it's just an M2 with a new body meant to recall the original 2002 sports sedan. With 370 horsepower from its inline six, it might be fair to call this 2002 "Germany's Mustang GT." Just don't tell that to any former yuppies from the 80s; they'll sneeze mocha latte all over their cardigans.
  • 2001 X Coupe on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#5) 2001 X Coupe

Here's the other car that set BMW's modern design language: the Chris Bangle designed X Coupe. Bangle's heavily faceted "flame surface" design treatment has become the stuff of controversy in subsequent years. But that's probably only because Bangle's design was a victim of its own success, being so immediately popular that practically everyone began to rip it off. If they didn't just hire Bangle directly. And that's how a bunch of Fords, Aston Martins, Jaguars, Opels, Fiats, Ferraris and Kias started to look like dated BMWs.
  • 2015 All-Electric i8 on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#6) 2015 All-Electric i8

A recent design study into the plausibility of building an all-electric hypercar, the i8 might best be thought of as a Tesla Model S on some seriously heavy German steroids.
  • 2009 Vision Efficient Dynamics on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#7) 2009 Vision Efficient Dynamics

Oh, for God's sake, BMW. What's with your concept car names lately? First, this is a great car, an amazing car, with all the highest tech everything and an excellent hybrid drivetrain. Shame you had to ruin it with that BMW boardroom Buzzword Soup name. And you do realize the official name of this concept is the "Vision ED." Yes? So, you're expecting grown men to tell their friends how desperately they want ED? What's the matter, BMW execs...go a little soft on the GINA?
  • 1972 E25 Turbo on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#8) 1972 E25 Turbo

Think of this BMW concept car as the intermediary step between the Spicup and production M1. It's influence on the latter BMW supercar could hardly be clearer, but it doesn't stop there. This car completely changed BMW's design language for decades to come, and its influence can still be seen today. For a vehicle design more than 40 years ago, that's more or less the definition of "futuristic."
  • 2008 M1 Hommage on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#9) 2008 M1 Hommage

A few years ago, coming up on its hundredth birthday, BMW began launching a line of retro "Hommage" cars. And so far, every one of them has been a winner -- including this modern BMW concept car take on the classic M1.
  • 2017 Rapp Design Study on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#10) 2017 Rapp Design Study

In honor of BMW's upcoming 100th birthday, freelance automotive designer Dejan Hristov came up with this. It's named after German engineer Karl Friedrich Rapp, who originally founded BMW almost a century ago. While this isn't an "official" BMW design, the company would sure be doing well to take Hristov up on his design ideas.
  • 2007 Concept CS on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#11) 2007 Concept CS

Based on the 7-Series, the beautiful CS came very, very close to going into production. But then some banks lost a bet with someone else's money.
  • 2008 GINA Concept on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#12) 2008 GINA Concept

Oh, Chris Bangle. Really? All right, the car is a cool concept, and the idea of a fabric skin covering a moving skeleton, allowing the car to change shape at will, is a cool one. Neat idea. But really, Chris? You're going to call a car with that particular hood opening the "GINA?" So...guessing "CR-VX" was taken, then?
  • 2012 Zagato Coupe on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#13) 2012 Zagato Coupe

Of all the BMW concept cars of late, this one looks the most like it could be parked in our garages today. And there's no real reason it shouldn't be; based on the Z4, this Coupe concept is practically production ready today. About the only argument to be made against it is that it might cut into Z4 or M2 sales. But apart from that, this stunning Aston-fighter could persuade Mr. Bond to reconsider his relationship with Germany.
  • 1969 BMW Spicup on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#14) 1969 BMW Spicup

Unveiled in Geneva some 50 years ago, the Spicup might seem a bit dated by today's standards -- but it was a very big deal back then. Not least of which because it helped pave the way for BMW's most well-known supercar, the M1.
  • 1995 BMW Z18 on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#15) 1995 BMW Z18

All right, obviously nobody would actually buy this thing if BMW had produced it. The Z18 is practically a parody of itself, an almost cynical commentary on the mid-90s emergence of wannabe "crossover" vehicles. But still, in a way, you do have to wonder if the world is truly better off without at least a few of these oddballs driving around.
  • 2011 328 Hommage on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#16) 2011 328 Hommage

Love it or hate it, this retro concept car take on the 328 Spyder is definitely a head-turner.
  • 1991 Nazca on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#17) 1991 Nazca

If this design seems slightly reminiscent of a certain, early-90s, Mercedes-powered supercar from McLaren...that's not your imagination. Even at the time, many accused McLaren of ripping off fellow F1 race car designer Fabrizio Giugiaro. This wouldn't be the first or last time BMW "inspired" something Mercedes-powered; but it is probably the most obvious.
  • 1999 Z9 Gran Turismo on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#18) 1999 Z9 Gran Turismo

Despite looking cool, this concept was one of the more important ones to date. In sort of the same way the E25 helped to set BMW's design language from 1992 to 2000, the Z9 was one of two cars that set the company's design language from 2000 to present. You can see echoes of it in almost everything produced today. Interesting fact: the Z9 was powered by a mid-mounted V-8 diesel, which later found its way into the 740d.
  • 2011 Vision Connected Drive on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#19) 2011 Vision Connected Drive

Despite having another Boardroom Buzzword Soup name, at least the Connected Drive is still an awesome concept car. The idea of this car, quite apart from the excellent styling, is that it will communicate with other cars and the driver on a virtual network, setting the framework for a fully self-driving infrastructure. Which would almost be a shame, considering how much fun this car must be to drive. Oh well...at least this Vision's name doesn't acronym down to any embarrassing sexual...

Oh, JESUS, people! Is somebody working through some issues in Germany or something?
  • 2006 Mille Miglia Coupe on Random Best Futuristic BMW Concept Cars We Wish Were Mad

    (#20) 2006 Mille Miglia Coupe

This car is one of many "retro-futuristic" concepts that emerged in the early-to-mid 2000s. Made to resemble the classic 328, this car is what BMW engineers imagined people from the 1950s would imagine for today.

All manufacturers produce concept cars, BMW is one of the few to consistently do it right. The concept car represents the future design concept of the brand, and the design elements will be applied to future generation models or new cars.
