(#1) X-Men: Days of Future Past

Quicksilver in 20th Century Fox’s universe is slightly quicker than his Marvel Studios counterpart, to the point where those around him might as well be statues when he gets going.
The scene sees the crew taking fire from the guards after busting Magneto out of confinement.

With everyone’s powers either down or restricted in some way, Quicksilver thinks on his feet (literally). He uses his super-speed during a beautiful slow-motion sequence to divert all the bullets away from his comrades and redirects all harm at the guards themselves before they even have a chance to blink.

The Matrix was a movie that revolutionized film in many ways, but especially with its special effects. With slow-mo action-packed scenes happening throughout the picture from the get-go, it’s hard to believe that by the third act there’d still be room for any more surprising jaw-dropping visuals. But this scene does just that, so much so that scenes of a similar style in other movies are referred to as using the "bullet time" effect from this point on.

And this is due to this scene in which our protagonist, Neo, dodges bullets so fast, you’re actually able to see the projected flight path thanks to a state-of-the-art 360-degree setup.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    • Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Glenn Close, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Kurt Russell

Having already caught a glimpse of the damage his whistle-controlled arrow can cause in the first installment, we may have known what was to follow when Yondu was reunited with his new fin (similar to that of his comic book counterpart), but certainly not the magnitude that followed in this scene!

And thanks to slow-mo, as his enemies fall around him like droplets of rain to "Come A Little Bit Closer" by Jay & The Americans, you can’t help but feel uplifted.

  • Deadpool on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#4) Deadpool

    • Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapičić

Combining action and comedy from the get-go in these visually stunning opening credits, we pan around the interior of the carnage inside a rolling car which we slowly begin to realize Deadpool is the cause of. We then see obvious comedic gags like a crotch to the face, as well as subtle gags in the form of parodied credits, along with Wade Wilson's fourth-wall-breaking comedy gold, making jokes about Ryan Reynolds and his Green Lantern blunder.

Fun fact: The song "Just Call Me Angel" by Juice Newton playing in this opening scene also accompanied the short Deadpool film which assisted in getting this feature-length made.

Spending most of his life taking things lying down, Wesley (James McAvoy) discovers his “panic attacks” are in fact adrenaline which gives him superhuman accuracy.

With his new lease on life, he belittles his obnoxious boss in front of the entire office and then communicates how he feels to his best friend (Chris Pratt) - who’s been sleeping with his girlfriend - in the form of a keyboard to the face. And just in case you still didn’t get how Wesley feels, it’s spelled out for us.

Though it's a sequel that perhaps fell a bit short to that of its predecessor, one thing they didn’t let us down on was special effects. And this is most apparent during this intense, high-speed-chase, martial arts extravaganza.

As Morpheus, Trinity, and the key maker are trying to evade capture on a gigantic freeway, the fight comes to a close when two trucks collide with one another sending Morpheus and the key maker flying in-between a gateway of smoke and flames, and it just looks fantastic.

In the final act, we see Valentine’s implants, along with the heads of the hosts, explode.

Thankfully, due to Valentine’s weak stomach when it came to blood, the audience is rewarded by a stunningly beautiful, Technicolor extravaganza.

Zack Snyder is definitely known for favoring the slow-mo technique in cinematography. And when it comes to scenes like this, it’s easy to see why.

Using Alan Moore's graphic novel as a storyboard for this feature, in the first act, we see The Comedian being thrown through his apartment window to his fate. The slow-mo shot of the glass bursting around him looks like it actually belongs in the panel of a comic book.

  • Justice League on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#9) Justice League

    • Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J. K. Simmons

We knew Henry Cavill’s Superman was fast, but up until this point, it was only ever demonstrated in real time. Whether he was going toe-to-toe with his enemies or bursting into the sky, either way, he would always look like a bluish, red blur more than anything else.

This scene, however, allows us to view things in Barry Allen’s time as he uses his super-speed to aid his comrades. With the initial movement of Superman’s eyes followed by the slow turning of his head, our hearts sink along with The Flash’s as Superman is able to use his own super-speed to track The Flash’s movements, all the while restraining the rest of the Justice League, before taking on a terrified Barry Allen.

  • Superman Returns on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#10) Superman Returns

    • Marlon Brando, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth, Parker Posey, James Marsden, Richard Branson, Frank Langella, Eva Marie Saint, Brandon Routh, Peta Wilson, Kal Penn, James Karen, Sam Huntington, Ian Roberts, Noel Neill, Tristan Lake Leabu, David Fabrizio, Stephan Bender, Vincent Stone

Initially, this scene shows Superman’s "faster than a speeding bullet" reputation demonstrated like never before. We watch Superman as he flies alongside minigun bullets being fired in quick succession, before beating them to the intended victim and taking them to the chest in homage to his older onscreen incarnations.

If that wasn’t enough, the scene then gets turned up to 11 when the foe fires a gun directly at the Man of Steel’s eye and we get to see just how invulnerable he really is.

  • V for Vendetta on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#11) V for Vendetta

    • Natalie Portman, John Hurt, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Fry, Imogen Poots, Stephen Rea, Eddie Marsan, Rupert Graves, Sinéad Cusack, Chris Wilson, Guy Henry, Tim Pigott-Smith, John Standing, Ben Miles, Roger Allam, Forbes KB, Malcolm Sinclair, João Costa Menezes, Martin Savage, Christopher Fosh, Wolfgang Stegemann, Laura Greenwood, Cosima Shaw, Andy Rashleigh, David Decio, John Ringham, Norman Campbell Rees, Natasha Wightman, David Leitch, Mark Longhurst, Nicolas de Pruysenaere, Michael Simkins, Lee Asquith-Coe, Alister Mazzotti, Megan Gay, Matt Wilkinson, Charles Cork, Adrian Finighan, Greg Donaldson, Mary Stockley, Mathis Landwehr, Richard Laing, Andy Callaghan, Clive Ashborn, Billie Cook, Tony Cook, William Tapley, Juliet Howland, Roderic Culver, Ben Posener, Emma Field-Rayner, Amelda Brown, Richard Campbell, Ian Burfield, Paul Antony-Barber, Dulcie Smart, Jason Griffiths, Derek Hutchinson, Madeleine Rakic-Platt, Mark Phoenix, Anna Farnworth, Chad Stahelski, Simon Newby, Jack Schouten, Gerard Gilroy, Edsel Kragg, David Hood, Keith How, Oliver Bradshaw, Rogan Grant, Jonas von Lingen, Selina Giles, Eamon Geoghegan, Grant Burgin, Joseph Rye, Ian T. In one of his final acts, V, with nothing but his “fancy knives” and “karate gimmicks,” is surrounded by a gun-wielding SWAT team.

When V is then told his number is up, he quips at the brag of guns stating:

No, what you have are bullets, and the hope that when your guns are empty I'm no longer standing, because if I am you'll all be dead before you've reloaded.

Unfortunately for them, the latter comes to fruition. And thanks to slow-mo, after delivering this line, we’re able to see V execute each and every one of them as they fumble to reload unsuccessfully.

  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#12) X-Men Origins: Wolverine

    • Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Patrick Stewart, Will i Am, Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Kevin Durand, Dominic Monaghan, Scott Adkins, Daniel Henney, Danny Huston, Daniel Negreanu, Asher Keddie, Tahyna Tozzi, Mike Dopud, Troye Sivan, Adelaide Clemens, Peter O'Brien, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Julia Blake, Aaron Jeffery, Max Cullen, Terry Lee Smith, Socratis Otto, Byron Chief-Moon, Myles Pollard, Alexandra Davies, Chaz Smith, Chris Sadrinna, Panou, Warwick Young, Elizabeth Tranchant, James D. Dever, Alice Parkinson, Eric Breker, Tom O'Sullivan, Adrian Hughes, Tim Pocock, Matthew Dale, Elizabeth Thai, Stephen Anderton, Nathin Butler, Rob Flanagan, Michael-James Olsen, Johnson Phan, Suzie Steen, Karl Beattie, Stephen Leeder, Don Battee, Alison Araya, David Ritchie, Septimus Caton, Beatrice Ilg, Peter Barry, Henry Browne, John Shrimpton, Ian Thompson, Joshua Dean Williams, Phil Patterson, Anthony Gee, Evan Sturrock, Kanako Takegishi, Jade Tang, Martin Obuga, Eileen Bui, Susan Glaze-Harper, Joelle Tang, Rita Affua Connell, Dennis Kreusler, Paul Padagas, April Elleston-Enahoro

Though fans were slightly disappointed with this movie, this scene takes place in one of the better segments.

It sees the "Merc with the Mouth" deflect a massive amount of bullets with his swordsmanship. But as well as seeing this in real time, we get to see things slowed down as he slices an oncoming bullet, dividing it into the chests of two assailants bringing up the rear.

  • Spider-Man on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#13) Spider-Man

    • Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Cliff Robertson, Rosemary Harris, J. K. Simmons, Joe Manganiello, Elizabeth Banks

At the dawn of the new century, so came the dawn of a new Spider-Man, and thanks to the special effects that came with the 21st century, it was like we’d never seen him before.

Throughout the movie, we’re able to see the effectiveness of Pete’s Spidey Sense, but the move that tops the rest is when he’s able to dodge a barrage of the Green Goblin’s razor grenades - and thanks to slow-mo, we can see just how close he came to biting it.

  • Dredd on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#14) Dredd

    • Lena Headey, Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Domhnall Gleeson, Deobia Oparei, Wood Harris, Langley Kirkwood, Rakie Ayola, Patrick Lyster, Joe Vaz, Jason Cope, Karl Thaning, Warrick Grier, Santi Scinelli, Francis Chouler, Brandon Livanos, Scott Sparrow, Porteus Xandau, Allen Irwin, Luke Tyler, Shoki Mokgapa, Michele Levin, Nicole Bailey, Junior Singo, Travis Snyders, Daniel Hadebe, Chad Phillips, Desmond Lai Lan, Rachel Wood, Emma Breschi, Tamer Burjaq, Edwin Perry, Eden Knowles, Yohan Chun, Andile Mngadi, Martin Kintu

The film takes place in a dystopia where the role of judge, jury, and executioner are all carried out by the same person, Judge Dredd. He and his new rookie are trapped inside a mega block. In there with them are hundreds of tenants, most of which are gun-wielding villains who all work for the boss in the penthouse suite, MA-MA.

The clinger being, the new substance on the street, known as SLO-MO, allows its user to perceive time at a fraction of its normal speed. So when Dredd bursts into an offender’s apartment mid-use, it’s clear it allows us, the audience, to enjoy the carnage the very same way.

  • Kung Fu Hustle on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#15) Kung Fu Hustle

    • Stephen Chow, Yuen Wah, Huang Shengyi, Hark-On Fung, Lam Suet, Feng Xiaogang, Leung Siu-lung, Lam Chi-chung, Danny Chan, Yu Xing, Chiu Chi-ling, Kai Man Tin, Yuen Qiu, Yuen Cheung-yan, Zhang Yibai, Oliver Wong, Dong Zhi Hua, Kang Xi Jia, Wellson Chin, Si Lu Ren, Min-hun Fung, Nang Yang, Billy Ma, Chao Xia Liu, Ming Ming Zhang, Hao Tian Yuan, David Hung, Wen Hui He, Xiao Lung Ding, Kai Shi Chen

Up until this point, the only threat we have witnessed is the nefarious Axe Gang. So when this group of ax-wielding villains come to start trouble for the poverty stricken residents of Pig Sty alley, all seems lost for these colorful bunch of pathetic miscreants.

It’s clear that the antagonists may have their cut work out for them as the leader is completely paralyzed. Due to the speed in which it happened, initially, we don’t know who did it, but thanks to slow-mo, we not only get to see who our hero is (Coolie), but we also get to see him continue to take care of business with his special 12 Kicks of the Tam School technique.

And if that wasn’t enough, he is joined by two more martial art residents who help him take out the trash with their own unique style of Eight Trigram Staff and Hung Family Wire kung fu.

  • Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

(#16) Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

    • Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aubrey Plaza, Michael Cera, Bill Hader, Thomas Jane, Jason Schwartzman, Alison Pill, Brie Larson, Brandon Routh, Mae Whitman, Clifton Collins, Jr., Ellen Wong, Kieran Culkin, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Ingrid Haas, Erik Knudsen, Don McKellar, John Patrick Amedori, Joe Dinicol, Matt Watts, Will Seatle Bowes, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Tara Mason, Satya Bhabha, Chantelle Chung, Nelson Franklin, Hope Larson, Joe Vercillo, Dan Cristofori, Kristina Pesic, Alexander Narizini, Kerr Hewitt, Abigail Chu, Michael Lazarovitch, Marlee Otto, Jung-Yul Kim, Ben Lewis, Ryan Allen, Tennessee Thomas, Joshua William James, Keita Saitou, Shôta Saitô, Walter Gasparovic, Mark LeRoy, Chuck Little, Maurie W. Kaufmann, Christine Watson, Celine Lepage, Craig Stickland, Emily Kassie, Jessica Martins

Edgar Wright does a terrific job at bringing Bryan Lee O’Malley’s quirky indie graphic novel to life, especially when it came to the action sequences.

This is first demonstrated when Scott Pilgrim encounters the first evil ex he must defeat, Matthew Patel. Not only is Scott’s first blow delivered to Matthew slow-mo style, but the shot itself is almost directly off the page of its literary inspiration, complete with a visual onomatopoeia.

  • The One on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#17) The One

    • Jason Statham, Carla Gugino, Jet Li, Ashlyn Gere, Dean Norris, Delroy Lindo, Archie Kao, James Morrison, Doug Savant, Harriet Sansom Harris, Cynthia Pinot, Dylan Bruno, Scott L. Schwartz, Matt Birman, Clement Blake, Tucker Smallwood, Mark Borchardt, Richard Steinmetz, Darin Morgan, Steve Rankin, Boots Southerland, Teddy Lane Jr., Denney Pierce, Edward James Gage, Alan D. Purwin, Joel Stoffer, Ken Kerman, Bill Dunnam, Darrell Geer, Karl J. Martin, Kevin Indio Copeland, Ron Zimmerman, Peter McKernan, Ramsey Luke, B.T. Taylor, Thanh T. Tran, David Keats, Narinder Samra, Marco Verdier

The story sees a renegade ex-multiverse officer travel through multiple universes, offing alternate versions of himself to gain their strength, speed, and intelligence.

We get our first glimpse of our protagonist, Yu Law (Li), and his abilities simultaneously. Moving at a pace so fast, not only is he quick enough to dodge bullets, but he actually has the time after shots were fired to pick up the body of one of his fallen victims and use it as a shield.

  • Blade on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#18) Blade

    • Kris Kristofferson, Wesley Snipes, Traci Lords, Sanaa Lathan, Stephen Dorff, N'Bushe Wright, Donal Logue, Udo Kier, Gerald Okamura, Tim Guinee, Arly Jover, Shannon Lee, John Enos III, Ted King, Kenny Johnson, Matt Schulze, Jeff Imada, Sidney S. Peluso, Freeman White, Marcus Salgado, Esau McKnight Jr., Nikki DiSanto, Beth Theriac, Erl Van Douglas, Yvette Ocampo, Eboni 'Chrystal' Adams, Elliott James, Carrie Seeley

Not only does this scene show just how fast these vamps can be when our main bloodsucker (Frost) avoids our hero's (Blade) oncoming fire, but because it has been slowed down to such a pace that we can appreciate it in its entirety, it has been argued that this movie technically created the famous "bullet time" effect later made famous by The Matrix.

  • Shaolin Soccer on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#19) Shaolin Soccer

    • Stephen Chow, Zhao Wei, Cecilia Cheung, Nicholas Tse, Karen Mok, Vincent Kok, Ng Man-tat, Lam Chi-chung, Danny Chan, Kai Man Tin, Patrick Tse, Wong Yat-fei, Mei Lin Mo

Combining sports and comedy with a unique martial arts approach, this is the first scene which lets us know exactly what we’re in for.

Stephen Chow makes an example of his foes by demonstrating his Steel Leg technique through the medium of soccer.

Kato, sidekick to the vigilante known as Green Hornet, was previously played by the legendary martial arts master Bruce Lee, so how could any 21st-century version ever compare?

Well, they didn’t try and compete but instead took their own fresh approach. Rather than finding someone who could match Lee’s speed, they applied effects which not only slowed everything (bar our Kato) down, but elongated objects and zoned in on certain items which assisted in our sidekick’s hand-to-hand combat in a style aptly named Kato Vision.
