The Matrix was a movie that revolutionized film in many ways, but especially with its special effects. With slow-mo action-packed scenes happening throughout the picture from the get-go, it’s hard to believe that by the third act there’d still be room for any more surprising jaw-dropping visuals. But this scene does just that, so much so that scenes of a similar style in other movies are referred to as using the "bullet time" effect from this point on.

And this is due to this scene in which our protagonist, Neo, dodges bullets so fast, you’re actually able to see the projected flight path thanks to a state-of-the-art 360-degree setup.

  • Dredd on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#14) Dredd

    • Lena Headey, Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Domhnall Gleeson, Deobia Oparei, Wood Harris, Langley Kirkwood, Rakie Ayola, Patrick Lyster, Joe Vaz, Jason Cope, Karl Thaning, Warrick Grier, Santi Scinelli, Francis Chouler, Brandon Livanos, Scott Sparrow, Porteus Xandau, Allen Irwin, Luke Tyler, Shoki Mokgapa, Michele Levin, Nicole Bailey, Junior Singo, Travis Snyders, Daniel Hadebe, Chad Phillips, Desmond Lai Lan, Rachel Wood, Emma Breschi, Tamer Burjaq, Edwin Perry, Eden Knowles, Yohan Chun, Andile Mngadi, Martin Kintu

The film takes place in a dystopia where the role of judge, jury, and executioner are all carried out by the same person, Judge Dredd. He and his new rookie are trapped inside a mega block. In there with them are hundreds of tenants, most of which are gun-wielding villains who all work for the boss in the penthouse suite, MA-MA.

The clinger being, the new substance on the street, known as SLO-MO, allows its user to perceive time at a fraction of its normal speed. So when Dredd bursts into an offender’s apartment mid-use, it’s clear it allows us, the audience, to enjoy the carnage the very same way.

The opening credits show close-up, graphic annihilations from bullets, bricks, baseball bats, broken bottles, knives, and grenades to the joyful melody of "Let me Down Easy" by The Stranglers.

  • Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

Edgar Wright does a terrific job at bringing Bryan Lee O’Malley’s quirky indie graphic novel to life, especially when it came to the action sequences.

This is first demonstrated when Scott Pilgrim encounters the first evil ex he must defeat, Matthew Patel. Not only is Scott’s first blow delivered to Matthew slow-mo style, but the shot itself is almost directly off the page of its literary inspiration, complete with a visual onomatopoeia.

  • Blade on Random Awesome Action Scenes That Prove Slow Motion Is More Than Just A Cheap Trick

    (#18) Blade

Not only does this scene show just how fast these vamps can be when our main bloodsucker (Frost) avoids our hero's (Blade) oncoming fire, but because it has been slowed down to such a pace that we can appreciate it in its entirety, it has been argued that this movie technically created the famous "bullet time" effect later made famous by The Matrix.

Stephen Chow makes an example of his foes by demonstrating his Steel Leg technique through the medium of soccer.
