  Nina Tucker was a little girl who, like most little girls, loved her daddy. The last thing she expected was for him to fuse her with the family dog. But Shou Tucker does exactly that. Why? Because he thought that producing a 'talking chimera' would secure his career as a state alchemist, and his job was apparently more important to him than his child - and his dog. In fact, it was also more important to him than his wife, because he did the exact same thing to Nina's mother and another dog.

  If you want to punch this guy in the face, you're totally not alone - he's one of the most loathed anime characters of all time.

  The Todoroki household is not a happy one. Because Shoto's hero potential was so promising, Enji isolated his son from his other siblings. In the meantime, he was verbally and even physically abusive to every member of his family - including his wife Rei.

  Rei was so upset by Enji's poor treatment that she started to resent Shoto for resembling his father. In a moment of frustration, she splashed boiling water into his eye, permanently scarring his face. 

  Enji's abusive treatment of Shoto is a betrayal of his duties as a father, but what his mother did was a betrayal of a loving parent-child relationship. They've since patched things up somewhat, but it doesn't fully erase the pain.

  Sousuke Aizen betrayed the whole Soul Society, but while his kindly persona was well-liked by its members, not all of them could be said to have truly loved him. Momo Hinamori, who he once trained, did. That's why it was so emotionally devastating for her to learn that the dashing lieutenant was actually planning on destroying Soul Society. Ultimately, Aizen doesn't just betray the organization Momo belongs to, he also betrays her personally, in the most intense way possible.

  He takes her life, describing it as an act of mercy because he'd trained her not to be able to live without her. When he explains this to Renji, he doesn't quite agree.

  (#4) The Survey Corps Discover That Their Allies Are Titans In 'Attack On Titan'

  The Survey Corps actually endure this repeatedly at the hands of their comrades, Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt. Going through the trauma of fighting Titans together made the cadets feel closely bonded to one another, so when they first discover that Annie is actually the Female Titan, it's devastating news.

  But things get worse from there. It turns out that Reiner and Bertholdt are also Titan shifters - specifically, the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan, who breached Wall Maria, destroying thousands of lives and turning many cast members into refugees.

  The cadets don't know whether to feel worse about the events themselves, or the fact that they were perpetrated by trusted friends.

  Isabella, known to the orphans of Gracefield House as Mama, is beloved by all of her children - especially Emma. When they find out that she's secretly selling them off as meat for a race of demons, she feels justifiably betrayed. There's no time to dwell on it too much though - Emma and her friends have to figure out how to escape before they meet the fate that Isabella has in store for them.

  Viewers eventually discover that Isabella isn't doing this because she wants to. She was once in the same situation as Emma was, but instead of being used as demon food, she was offered a position as a Mama who would raise up the next generation of meat.

  Itachi's betrayal of the Uchiha clan is probably one of the most well-known examples on the list, and for good reason - it's one of the most intense and upsetting things that happens in Naruto. 

  Though he was only thirteen, Itachi was one of the strongest members of his clan - which is how he managed to eliminate them all in a single night. He spared only his little brother Sasuke, telling him that he'd done it to test his power.

  As every Naruto viewer knows, that was a complete and total fabrication. In reality, Itachi was given a terrible choice by Danzo Shimura, the leader of Root. Betray his clan and save himself and his brother Sasuke, or be eliminated along with his family, saving no one. He chose the former, but wanted to encourage Sasuke to seek him out for revenge, so that Sasuke could gain the mangekyo sharingan. 

  The fact that Itachi actually had a good reason only made the betrayal more painful. Later he finds out, it wasn't Itachi who had betrayed him, it was the city where he was born and raised.

  It's hard to imagine a bigger betrayal than what Griffith did to Guts and the rest of the Band of the Hawk. Griffith and Guts were once good friends, to the point where Guts once went to great lengths to rescue Griffith from captivity. He was also Casca's former lover and a treasured member of the team.

  But for Griffith, no bond was more important than his lust for power. He opted to massacre nearly everybody in the Band of the Hawk in a brutal event called the Eclipse, in order to join the Godhand and become an all-powerful being called Femto. Just to rub salt in the wound, he also assaulted Casca while Guts, her current lover, was forced to watch.

  When the person you love is a mass murderer, you should expect that things aren't exactly going to turn out in your favor. But the fact that Kiyomi Takada probably could have seen Light Yagami's betrayal coming with a little forethought doesn't make it less sad.

  At first, Light persuades Kiyomi that he loves her and respects her, and gets her to dedicate her life to being his spokesman and his ally. This is pretty easy for the charismatic Light, since Kiyomi is head over heels in love with him anyway. But after Kiyomi takes down Mello, she finds herself in a situation where she's likely to be captured by the SPK. Rather than risk the SPK acquiring any incriminating evidence through Kiyomi, Light uses the Death Note to get her to burn the scrap of notebook paper she'd written Mello's name on - and burn herself alive in the process.

  Kiyomi is far from the only person Light betrays, but this is a particularly heartbreaking example.

  Soo-won was one of Yona's childhood friends, her cousin, and her first love. Despite genuinely caring for her, he still betrayed her by eliminating her father, Emperor II. He did this because Emperor II actually took Soo-won's father Yu-hon's life, for reasons that are never fully revealed - as well as Emperor II's inability to rule effectively.

  Soo-won didn't want to betray Yona, but his desire for revenge coupled with his desire to see his country ruled properly drove him to it. Of course, that doesn't make the whole thing any less painful for poor Yona.

  (#10) Ohgi Kaname's Girlfriend Shoots Him In 'Code Geass'

  Ohgi Kaname, a key member of the Black Knights, comes across Villeta Nu, a Brittainian woman who is loyal to the empire. Normally, the two of them would have been enemies, but because Villeta's memories are temporarily lost, they end up falling in love. 

  When Villeta regains her memories, she quickly reverts to her formerly racist opinion of Japanese people. That's why she shoots him in the stomach and commandeers a Knightmare Frame - all while Ohgi has no idea who she truly is or why the woman he loves would do such a thing.

  Eventually, the two reconnect and fall in love again, but that betrayal is likely to stay with them forever.

  Kenshin Himura's life prior to the start of Runouni Kenshin was a bloody and miserable one. He works as a mercinary, and while he's highly skilled, he's emotionally unsuited for the job. One of the few solaces that he had was his relationship with Tomoe, his first wife.

  What he doesn't realize is that Tomoe was originally married to a man whose life Kenshin ended, and Tomoe only married him so that she could get revenge. 

  Ultimately, she realizes that she truly loves Kenshin, and she tries to call off the assassination attempt she helped to orchestrate, even taking lives herself to protect her husband. But despite her change of heart, it's too late to do anything about it - and Kenshin ends up accidentally eliminating her as he tries to defend his own life.

  After this brutal series of events, Kenshin decides to dedicate himself to a peaceful existence. He doesn't blame Tomoe for attempting to betray him, rather he grieves her loss and regrets his own actions.

  You know what's horrible? Learning that your best friend is literally the Devil. That's exactly what happened to Akira Fudou, whose friend Ryo suddenly appears in his life and immiately starts wreaking havoc on it. Ryo not only publically reveals footage that proves Akira's identity as Devilman, he also reveals that he's the person who caused Akira to be possessed by the demon Amon in the first place.

  Considering how implicitly Akira trusted his friend, and how kind of a person he was before being possesed by a demon, this one really stings. But that's just what happens when you befriend Satan.

  Sometimes, a betrayal can still be heartbreaking even if it isn't the real deal. That's what happens when Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus seemingly betray the rest of the Sailor Scouts by teaming up with their enemy, Sailor Galaxia. Sailor Moon is understandably devastated by this betrayal. 

  The betrayal turns out to be a ruse to help the Scouts defeat Sailor Galaxia, but that plan doesn't work out so well for them - when they reveal to Galaxia where their allegiance truly lies, she destroys them.

  (#14) Soichiro Shimogamo's Brother Hands Him Over To The Friday Fellows In 'The Eccentric Family'

  Soichiro Ebisugawa loved his younger brother Soun the way any typical person would love their sibling - but Soun didn't seem to be able to reciprocate his elder brother's warm feelings. Rather than simply enjoy their connection, he boiled with jealousy over the fact that Soichiro ended up marrying Tousen, a woman who he would have very much liked to marry himself. He was also jealous of Soichiro's political power and social influence.

  In response to those feelings of jealousy - and to get some clout with a powerful social group - Soun helps the Friday Fellows capture Soichiro and eat him for dinner. This isn't cannibalism - Soichiro and Soun are both tanukis, shapeshifting creatures who often take human from, while the Friday Fellows are humans. So while Soun didn't sell his brother out to cannibals, he did send him to his demise.

  (#15) Nanbu Nearly Goes Back On His Promise To Joe In 'Megalo Box'

  After working for years throwing matches in an underground boxing ring, a nameless young man decides to go legit and join the Megalonia tournament. His trainer Nanbu is reluctant at first due to the threat to both his livelihood and his life, he eventually decides to support the young man in joining the tournament under the name Joe.

  Though Joe makes progress on the strength of his own skills, Nanbu is still worried about his unsavory connections. When he's asked to make Joe throw a Megalonia match in order to pay off his debts, he plans to do so - but at the last minute, he changes his mind, sacrificing his own eye to close the deal.

  While Nanbu doesn't completely go through with betraying Joe, it's arguable that Joe kind of betrayed Nanbu by breaking their original agreement and prioritizing his ambitions over Nanbu's ability to do things like have eyeballs.
