  Kinue Hayase presents one of the most extreme examples of an anime character who doesn't look their age. She's a 42-year-old mother of two, but you'd probably guess that she was in elementary school.

  Her cute, flirtatious nature is a source of major embarrassment for her kids.

  Eisaku Noguchi is the president of his school's chemistry club, but he's also a first year student, which means he's around 15 years old. Regardless of his actual age, his leadership role — coupled with his well-tailored suits and tiny mustache — cause him to resemble a middle-aged man.

  His classmates are continuously surprised that he's not a teacher or upperclassman, and the show often takes time to remind viewers of his true age via subtitles.

  Looming at a massive 6'7", the sorcerer Stiyl Magnus looks like he's well into his 20s. For this reason, it comes as a surprise to most that he's only 14. His unassuming age helps him out when he wants to illegally purchase cigarettes, since who on Earth would believe a minor could be almost seven feet tall?

  Leorio Paladiknight is 19 years old, but he's often mistaken for a middle-aged man. When Killua mocks him for being old, he responds by insisting that he looks like a teenager. While his claim might be hard to back up, for the 11-year-old Killua, teens probably also seem relatively old.

  • Ouran High School Host Club, Ouran High School Host Club

  Mitsukuni Haninozuka (AKA Honey-senpai) is actually one of the oldest characters in Ouran Host Club. He's a third year in high school, but he looks like a pre-schooler, and he milks the heck out of his cutesy appearance as a host.

  Despite his unassuming looks, he wields great power over the considerably larger underclassman Takashi Morinozuka.

  Kanata Izumi isn't the only character in Lucky Star who doesn't look her age, but she's definitely the most extreme example. Her actual age is never specified, but before her passing she was a married adult with an infant daughter.

  Despite her being well into adulthood, Kanata looks like a little girl. That's actually part of why her husband Sojiro likes her, as he's a self-proclaimed lolicon.

  • Death Note

  Near is a 17-year-old boy who looks like he's 7 and acts like he's 45. What's more, his appearance doesn't change as the series progresses, even though he is said to age from 13 to 17. While many adolescents hit a growth spurt in their mid-teens, Near gets no taller, and his facial structure stays the same.

  He finally reaches puberty at age 21 — as is shown in a post-series manga chapter — but the reason for the delay is never made clear.

  Tsunade Senju is 51 years old when she first appears on Naruto. At first glance, she simultaneously appears older and younger than she actually is, in part thanks to her magical powers. While using a jutsu to appear younger, Tsunade looks like she could be in her late twenties. When she's not using the jutsu, her features wrinkle and sag until you might believe she was in her 70s. 

  This harsh contrast is supposedly due to the physical strain her body is subjected to as a side-effect of her reliance on the energy-intensive jutsu.

  Hagumi Hanamoto is the size of a six-year-old, and in some ways her exterior matches her maturity. Despite this, her juvenile look is a little unsettling to her college classmates, especially those who find themselves attracted to her.

  (#10) Takeo Gouda — 'My Love Story'

  Takeo Gouda is a first year in high school, but you would never guess that if the series didn't make his age explicit. Coming in at 6´7" and 264 lbs, he looks a decade or two older than his 15 years.

  Despite his fully-formed appearance, he's naive, and not particularly emotionally mature.

  Hotaru Ichijō is an 11-year-old girl who hit puberty at an early age, making for a surprisingly realistic iteration of the "not looking your age" trope. A study done in 1993 concluded that Japanese children begin puberty about a year earlier than Western children, so by some accounts, Hotaru's early growth isn't completely ridiculous.

  That said, most of the other characters in Non Non Biyori don't perceive Hotaru as a child, and many of them actually treat her like an adult.

  Believe it or not, this adorable-looking "girl" is actually 57 years old. Biscuit Krueger, (AKA Bisky), is a professional Treasure Hunter who uses her Nen to make herself look younger. 

  Her true form is just as crazy as she is an extremely muscular woman several times bigger than her younger form.

  Tatsumaki (AKA the Tornado of Terror) is one of the Hero Association's most powerful heroes. She's 28 years old, but because of her short stature, she is often mistaken for a young girl by everyone around her. 

  But don't be fooled by her child-like appearance. As an S-Class Rank 2 esper, she's a force to be reckoned with.

  (#14) Jotaro Kujo - 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure'

  In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3: Stardust Crusaders, Jotaro Kujo is 17 years old. But his intimidating looks and muscular build make him look like a full-grown man in his 30s.

  As a high schooler, Jotaro would often get into fights with gangs, proving his incredible strength even at a young age. It's safe to say that no one would want to mess with this teenager.

  At first glance, Tsukuyomi Komoe looks like a little girl no older than ten years old. But in reality, she's the homeroom teacher of Year 1 Class 7. Although her real age is unknown, it's safe to assume that she's at least 21 years old given that she's a school teacher. 

  Even though she seems like a little kid, she's an incredibly reliable and competent teacher who cares for her students.

  Shingo Kinjou is a third year in high school, so he's almost an adult, legally speaking. However, he defintiely isn't 35, which is about how old he looks.

  Yowamushi Pedal features a large cast of teenage characters, most of whom resemble their approximate age, but Kinjou looks older than some of the parents on the show.

  We should all take tips from Lisa Lisa (AKA Elizabeth Joestar) on how to stay this fabulous and beautiful at the ripe age of 50. This middle-aged mother looks like she's in her 20s. Her ability to use Ripple allows her to look this young and fit.

  The Vice President of Sanada North High's student council in Daily Lives of High School Boys is a 17-year-old student. But he looks like he could be one the school's middle-aged teachers. 

  Despite his deliquent looks and older appearance, he is a kind and gentle soul who takes his job as Vice President seriously.

  Minnie May Hopkins of Gunsmith Cats has a particularly bizarre reason for not looking her age. At 17, she takes growth stunting concoctions that cause her to resemble an elementary school student. To make things creepier, she willingly takes them in order to satisfy her boyfriend Ken Takizawa's lustful desires.

  The English dub creators found this concept so putrid that they made the drugs "growth stimulating" instead.

  Okay, so basically everyone in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a 20-year-old who looks 40. The art style involves a lot of heavy lines and huge muscles, so it's to be expected that most people look twice their age.

  Even so, Dio is still noteworthy, as his frequent grimaces make him look even older than his jacked body does.

  Kraft Lawrence, the main protagonist in Spice and Wolf, is 25 years old. Perhaps it's because of his gray hair and stubble, but many viewers assume that Lawrence is in his 30s to 40s.

  Plus, he acts quite mature for his age, exuding wisdom and knowledge far beyond his young age.
