  (#1) Roy Mustang Unleashes Hell Upon Envy In 'FMA: Brotherhood'

  If there's one thing that Envy taught us in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, it's that you shouldn't piss off Roy Mustang. After walking in on the homunculus strangling his "irreplaceable subordinate" Riza Hawkeye, Mustang loses it and pummels Envy over and over with deadly explosions. His final attack is so powerful it causes Envy to slump over and reveal his powerless true form - a small caterpillar-like creature that is helpless without a host or Philosopher's Stone to draw power from.

  If anything is likely to make a person snap and go berserk, it's being tortured. After enduring everything from having his fingers and toes chopped off and regenerated over and over again to having a centipede dropped into his ear, Ken Kaneki just can't take it anymore.

  The kindhearted young man he once was disappears, and his hair turns white. Where before he preferred to avoid violence if at all possible, now he's fully willing to fight for his life. But he goes much further than just fighting - he takes a bite from Yamori's flesh and eats his kagune, leaving him a horrifically injured wreck before escaping.

  When the contemptible Shou Tucker tells Edward Elric that what he and Alphonse tried to do by bringing his mother back to life was no different from Tucker's chimeras, Edward screams that that isn't true, and pummels Tucker into a bloody pulp. Most satisfying moment in FMA? Arguably - but it's also a deeply sad one.

  Naruto's nine-tailed fox form is unleashed whenever he sustains some form of extreme emotional pain. This happens several times throughout the series, especially toward the beginning when he's not on good terms with the tailed beast inside of him. Tailed beast mode makes him extraordinarily powerful, but it also means that he isn't in control of his behavior and is more likely to hurt people in ways he otherwise wouldn't.

  Activating tailed beast mode is dangerous because it requires his cells to rapidly replace themselves, thus shortening his lifespan. Even worse, when the mode is active, the tailed beast could escape and wreck havoc. The form is activated several times, but one of the most dramatic times occurs when Hinata seems to have perished. When this happens, Kurama nearly escapes from his seal.

  (#5) Gon Reveals His Terrifying Form To Neferpitou In 'Hunter x Hunter (2011)'

  Gon is a character who rarely gets too angry or upset. Therefore, his rage scene came as a shock to most viewers. After Neferpitou kills Kite, Gon becomes so enraged that he transforms into a terrifying and unrecognizable form. He easily overpowers Neferpitou and even kills them. If it weren't for Killua interfering, Gon would have killed Komugi and himself since his power was too strong and self-destructive.

  Gohan is a fairly mild-mannered child in Dragon Ball Z, but seeing his friends and family being hurt by a villain often leads him to snap.

  After Frieza gores Krillin with his horns and tosses him into the ocean to die on Planet Namek, Gohan desperately wants to save him. Frieza blocks Gohan's path and taunts him, causing Gohan to go berserk and start pummeling the Saiyan-hater with a power level that shocks everyone, especially Vegeta. Unfortunately, Gohan's attack wasn't enough to completely beat Frieza, but it certainly was a preview of things to come later in the series.

  • Berserk Golden Age Arc II: The Battle for Doldrey, Berserk Golden Age Arc I: The Egg of the King

  Given that the show is called Berserk, it'd be pretty disappointing if there wasn't a moment like this. In fact, there are several. Let's zero in on a dramatic but lesser-known example from when Guts and Griffith were still friends. During one arc in the 90's series, Guts and company had to rescue Griffith who was being held hostage. When he discovers that Griffith has been starved and tortured into a shadow of his former self, he breaks through a wooden door to savagely waste the person responsible - and just about everybody else he comes across. This series definitely lives up to its title.

  (#8) Vegeta Goes Super Saiyan On Beerus After He Slaps Bulma in 'Dragon Ball Super'

  In this awesome fight scene, Vegeta proves that no one can hurt his wife and get away with it. When Bulma berates Beerus for ruining her birthday party, Beerus slaps her and knocks her onto the ground. Vegeta becomes furious at the sight of his wife getting hurt and transforms into a Super Saiyan 2. Even Master Roshi is amazed as he remarks how his anger has made him even stronger than Goku.

  (#9) Eva-01 Goes Into Berserker Mode In 'Evangelion'

  The Eva-01 unit doesn't always respond to the will of the person piloting it, which leads to multiple frightening instances where the unit goes berserk and attacks with reckless abandon. In one particularly harrowing instance, the Eva-01 devours an angel whole.

  Why does this happen if Shinji isn't asking the Eva-01 unit to do so? Because the Eva-01 is actually under the influence of Shinji's mother's soul, whose sole goal is to protect Shinji at all costs.

  Touta Matsuda has always believed in Light Yagami - in fact, he admires him deeply, and wishes he could be like him. When Light was accused of being Kira, Matsuda was always the first person to deny it - but also the first person to consider whether Kira might be in the right. 

  When Matsuda finds out that the man he respects is actually a cold-blooded killer, he loses his sh*t. He screams at Light, venting all of his feelings at him at once, before ultimately shooting him. Meanwhile, Light is having his own meltdown, screaming at Matsuda that he'd better put the gun down. Matsuda is stopped before he can end Light's life, but it's an uncharacteristic moment that makes the end scene that much more dramatic.

  (#11) Luffy Punches A Celestial Dragon In 'One Piece'

  Perhaps the most satisfying scene in all of One Piece, Luffy punches the celestial dragon who shot Hachi. Celestial Dragons are the most powerful and wealthy individuals who control the World Government. The laws don't apply to them and no one ever dares to cross them. But Luffy does what no one else could do and punches a celestial dragon out of anger for his friend.

  (#12) Ichigo Transforms Into His Full Hollow Form In 'Bleach'

  After being blasted in the chest by Ulquiorra, Ichigo is left severely wounded on the ground. But hearing Orihime's pleas for help awakens his new Full Hollow Form. Ulquiorra, who previously had the upper hand in the battle, is left defenseless against Ichigo's terrifying form. The immense power Ichigo demonstrates in this fight proved that no one could defeat him in this form.

  (#13) Obito Slaughters The Hidden Mist Ninjas In 'Naruto: Shippuden'

  Obito's rage against the Hidden Mist ninjas remains one of the darkest scenes in the Naruto series. Ater witnessing Rin's death, Obito flies into a state of rage and grief, awakening his Mangekyo Sharingan. The Hidden Mist ninjas attack Obito, but his new Mangekyo makes him impossible to defeat. Obito mercilessly kills everyone in his sight until he's left in a forest of blood. It's a scene that is truly chilling and tragic.

  Most of the time, Kagura is a silly person whose priorities seem to lay largely in playing with her gigantic dog and eating heaps of sukonbu. But Kagura is actually from the Yato clan, a ruthless group of mercenaries who prize violence and discourage overtures toward peace. Though she's abandoned her clan, its blood still runs through her veins.

  When Abuto nearly takes her friend Shinpachi's life, her Yato blood awakens, breaking Abuto's foot with her hands alone. Abuto recognizes the Yato in her and tries to flee, but Kagura refuses to show mercy. Shinpachi manages to recover enough to stop her from taking Abuto's life - which he claims to be doing not for Abuto's sake, but for Kagura's.

  (#15) Simon Activates A Volcano In 'Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann'

  Kamina is one of the most important people in the world to Simon, so it's not surprising that when he thinks Kamina has passed away, his reaction is an intense one. He spews forth so much spiral energy that the Dai-Gunzan ship starts glowing, and all the enemies on it are thrown off. What's more, he activates a volcano - seriously. The only thing that can stop his rampage is Kamina himself, who is still alive and is fully capable of kicking Simon's butt until he calms down.

  (#16) Hatsuharu Sohma

  • Fruits Basket

  This trope is actually one of Hatsuharu's defining character traits. Whenever he gets angry, a switch inside his mind is flipped, and he becomes 'Black Haru' - an aggressive and violent version of his normally cheerful self. This state is triggered multiple times throughout the series, leading him to wreck his classroom or start fights with Kyo, but the most dramatic moment comes in the manga. Be warned, there are spoilers ahead. 

  After Akito shoves Hatsuharu's girlfriend Rin off of a roof, he storms into Akito's room and threatens to end Akito's life. Considering the fact that Akito is - quite literally - the god that Hatsuharu and the rest of the Sohma family are welded to through love and obligation, as well as the person who controls every aspect of Haru's life, the fact that he's able to stand up to Akito, let alone threaten extreme violence, is incredible.

  • Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

  Most of the time, Quatre Raberba Winner is a calm and peaceful young man who leans toward pacifism. But the combination of being fresh from watching his father violently lose his life and being hooked up the a neural interface called the ZERO System makes him go berserk. Suddenly able to control a Gundam as if it's own body, but not able to control his own raging thoughts, Quatre blows up an OZ-occupied resource satellite and an evacuated civilian colony. He's ultimately stopped by Trowa, who blocks one of Quatre's attacks - seemingly sacrificing his own life in the process.

  (#18) Eren Goes Into Berserk Titan Mode When Fighting Annie In 'Attack On Titan'

  During their fight in the Stohess District, Annie lands a heavy blow on Eren, making him unable to move. However, he remembers his yearning for revenge and reminds himself that he will stop at nothing to kill the Titans. This hatred awakens a new Titan mode within him, and he unleashes a violent rage on Annie. His berserk mode is so brutal that he has to stop himself from eating Annie.

  (#19) Mob Reaches ???% In 'Mob Psycho 100'

  When Teru tries to get Mob to fight him using his full powers, Teru chokes Mob until he falls unconscious. However, this only awakens Mob's true powers as he reaches a level that is beyond numbers. Before this, viewers have only seen Mob reach 100%, a level that is already terrifying. But this new level that reads as "???%" proves that Mob is capable of destroying practically anything if his emotions are unleashed.

  (#20) Seishuu Handa Punches A Calligraphy Appraiser In 'Barakamon'

  Nobody likes having their artwork criticized, but when you're constantly stressed out the way Seishuu Handa is, that criticism can trigger a berserker mode reaction. Rather than humbly swallow the negative things that a calligraphy appraiser has to say about his work, Handa slugs the old man in the face. 

  This leads to Handa's father banishing him to a remote island where he can calm down and get away from any negative publicity that might have come from the event.

  Let's take a look at a more humorous example of the trope - Ranma Saotome's reaction to cats. Though otherwise a tough guy, Ranma is petrified of felines because his dad used to wrap him in sausages and fish and kick him into a pile of hungry cats. This was supposed to teach him martial arts, but all it really did was give him a phobia.

  So, what does Ranma do when surrounded by cats? He enters a 'berserker mode' where he starts acting like an angry, spitting cat himself. While he's easily manipulated due to his decreased brainpower, he's also extremely hard to deal with, since he'll scratch people's faces off without a second thought.

  (#22) Shichika Yasuri Storms A Castle In 'Katanagatari'

  Shichika Yasuri has been traveling and battling with Togame for ages - in fact, by the end of the series, he's fallen in love with her. So when she loses her life in a fight against Emonzaemon Sōda, Shichika doesn't know how to handle it. Though Togame told him to lead a peaceful existence without her, he cannot bring himself to do so.

  Instead, he approaches Emonzaemon for a battle, intending to use the fight as a means of suicide. He survives the battle and destroys the 12 swords he and Togame had dedicated their time to collecting.

  (#23) Gintoki Takes Out His Anger On Jirocho In 'Gintama'

  Most of the time, Gintama is all fun and laughs with its hilarious gags. But it's moments like this fight that prove how serious the show can be. After discovering Otose's unconscious body bleeding out on the ground, Gintoki releases a fury that has never been revealed before. Without wasting a breath, Gintoki immediately attacks Jirocho with his sword. The ensuing fight is quick yet brutal as Gintoki rages against Jirocho.

  Nadeko Sengoku goes through a whole lot of emotional turmoil before she finally snaps. A classmate places her under an excruciating curse that causes an invisible snake to constrict her body and mar it with snakelike scars, all because she turned down a love confession. With this and other issues causing major unrest in her classroom, she's forced to try and solve the problem as the class representative. Her timid personality makes it hard for her to speak up for herself and leads others to criticize her for avoiding responsibility - meanwhile she feels like she's being overburdened. 

  But when her friend Tsukihi cuts off part of her hair in response to her indecisive behavior, Nadeko's personality does a 180. After her teacher asks her for progress in resolving problems she doesn't want to deal with, she snaps and begins screaming at him, and at her other classmates before storming out of class.
