  While Prince Charles and Princess Diana didn’t have a fairy tale romance, it actually seems Prince Charles and Camilla kind of did.

  The two married in 2005, a whole 30 years after their dramatic romance first ignited. They married during a short civil ceremony in the Windsor town hall, which neither Queen Elizabeth or Prince Phillip attended. This marriage was noteworthy because no future king has ever married a divorced woman, though it’s assumed that when the time comes Prince Charles will abdicate and the throne will go directly to Prince William. It is also noteworthy that Camilla only received the title Duchess of Cornwall, which is the first time a woman married to a Prince of Wales did not become a princess. Camilla was once known as the “most hated woman in Britain,” but in their 13 years of marriage, Camilla has earned the public’s trust.

  Meanwhile, many believe Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, with whom Princess Diana had a two-year relationship before her death, was Princess Diana’s one true love. And so, it seems like Princess Diana and Prince Charles may have had epic love stories, just not with each other.

  It seems that Camilla was also the third person in Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding, even on their wedding day. It’s been reported that Prince Charles cried the night before his wedding to Princess Diana, as he was still in love with Camilla but felt pressure to married Princess Diana.

  Prince Charles and Camilla met in 1970 and dated, but she wasn’t considered "queen material" since she lacked an aristocratic bloodline and she wasn’t "virginal" enough. So, they broke up. Prince Charles then joined the Navy and Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles. It’s reported that the two sparked up their romance again in the late 1970s, right before Prince Charles would move with Princess Diana in 1981.

  In a 1995 interview, Princess Diana acknowledged this odd love by saying, “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

  While married to Princess Diana, Prince Charles had an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, and the whole world pretty much knew. The affair was confirmed publicly in 1992 through leaked phone conversations during which some of the transcript is rather steamy:

  Charles: Oh god. I'll just live inside your trousers or something. It would be much easier!

  Camilla: [Laughs.] What are you going to turn into, a pair of knickers? [Both laugh.] Oh, you're going to come back as a pair of knickers.

  Charles: Or, God forbid, a Tampax. Just my luck! [Laughs.]

  This became known as "Tampongate" and was probably the first time anyone has ever referred to a feminine hygiene product while talking dirty. At the time of these leaked tapes, Prince Charles was still married to Princess Diana.

  Making their courtship even weirder, Prince Charles had actually dated Princess Diana’s sister before dating her. Prince Charles briefly dated Lady Sarah McCorquodale, who eventually introduced Prince Charles to Princess Diana. There were reports of the sisters being rivals due to the fact they both dated Prince Charles, but it seems these reports were fabricated. Of any conflict, Lady Sarah said, “I introduced them, I’m cupid.”

  Of course, Prince Charles and Lady Sarah may have actually made more sense together, as they were closer in age. Prince Charles and Princess Diana were a whopping 12 years apart and married when he was 32 and she just 20. Of the age difference, Princes Charles said, “Diana will certainly keep me young.”

  Following the scandal of both their affairs, Prince Charles and Princess Diana separated, but didn't plan to divorce. However, Queen Elizabeth II was totally set on them divorcing, likely due to immense scandal their separation had caused. It's reported that Princess Diana received a letter in which the Queen wrote to her, “I have consulted with the Archbishop of Canterbury and with the prime minister and, of course, with Charles, and we have decided that the best course for you is divorce.” 

  Princess Diana and Prince Charles formally divorced in 1996, just one year before Princess Diana passed away.

  Princess Diana also engaged in infidelities of her own, which actually sent the royal family into crisis mode.

  Princess Diana and her riding instructor James Hewitt struck up a five-year affair. Due to the proximity of their affair and the birth of Prince Harry, as well as the stunning resemblance between Prince Harry and Hewitt, many have theorized that Hewitt is the biological father of Prince Harry. Though everyone involved has denied this allegation, even simply the theory of an illegitimate child in line for the throne supposed sent the royal family into panic mode.

  Hewitt never married or had children of his own, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s pining for his lost love Princess Diana. Hewitt exploited his relationship with Princess Diana by writing a tell-all book and even auctioning off love letters she had written him.
