I think the hamper was put there to show the extreme desperation for anything they can get. I’ve always loved this detail. Hopeful/hopelessness.

(#2) The Plane Definitely Sees The Survivors At The End

In the end of the film, the pilot of the plane is speaking Finnish on the radio. The very last words he says are, "Lähetätkö helikopterin?" which means "Will you send a helicopter?"

  • The Statue At The Mansion Foreshadows The Soldiers' Eventual Betrayal on Random Small But Fascinating Details Fans Noticed In '28 Days Later'

(#3) The Statue At The Mansion Foreshadows The Soldiers' Eventual Betrayal

    From IMDB

When Jim, Selena and Hannah first enter the manor where the soldiers have set up their fortress, a Roman statue of the Laöcoon group can be seen in the centre. In Virgil, Laöcoon was a Trojan priest who was attacked by giant serpents sent by the gods, and his most famous line is "Do not trust the Horse, Trojans / Whatever it is, I fear the Greeks even bearing gifts." His appearance is significant because he foreshadows the soldier's betrayal and ulterior motives.

(#5) The Missing Persons Posters Were Controversial But Not Intended As A Reference To 9/11

    From IMDB

The shot of the notice board at Piccadilly Circus, with the missing persons fliers, caused some controversy when the film was first released. Some said it was insensitive to what happened in New York after the 9/11 attacks. The film was shot prior to September 11, 2001, although it was released afterward. Danny Boyle said he based the shot on a photograph he saw from an earthquake in China but also said that if he had made the movie after the 9/11 attacks, he would not have shot that scene.

  • Newspapers And Posters Tell Us What Happened Before The Events Of The Movie on Random Small But Fascinating Details Fans Noticed In '28 Days Later'

(#6) Newspapers And Posters Tell Us What Happened Before The Events Of The Movie

    From Redditor u/Kspence92

I've always wondered how the goverment, society and the military would have responded to the rage outbreak. The film marketing provided a little background info that I'll try elaborate on

Day 1 Exposure Day 3 Infection Day 8 Epidemic Day 15 Evacuation Day 20 Devastation

Also a discarded newspaper has the following info

EVACUATION. Mass exodus from Britain causes global chaos. Refugee Crisis Looms. PM declare a state of emergency. Military ordered shoot to kill. Goverment checkpoints overrun. UN to build giant refugee camps. Chaos at all British airports. All roads out of London gridlocked. US navy patrols British waters.

Also, there are WARNING posters dotted around London declaring sections of the city too dangerous to travel in whilst other posters announce a curfew. A hard to make out poster in the cafe Jim goes Into is from the Department of Transportation and announces that all goods deliveries to and from the UK are suspended due to the quarantine.

In a deleted scene there is a passenger train which has been converted to a mobile hospital by the Red Cross, likely to evacuate patients out of London.

In the comics we see people panic buying medicine at a pharmacy in London shortly before the infection hits the city. The graphic novel shows Kings Cross station in chaos as people rush to evacuate. Parliament Square is shown abandoned with dead soldiers lying around.

Anyway, the point in this post was really just to see if anyone else has any background I do or opinions on the 28 days before Jim woke up. A prequel would be amazing.

(#7) The Infected Seem Superhuman Because They Are Played By Athletes

    From IMDB

Athletes were cast as the Infected because of how important physicality is to them. Danny Boyle felt that since athletes can do things other people can't, they would be interesting when translated into the movements of the Infected.

(#8) Part Of The Gas Station Explosion Is Based On Bombings In Northern Ireland

(#9) The Film Contains Numerous References To Real-Life Horrors

  • The Opening Scene Is Based On Real War Crimes on Random Small But Fascinating Details Fans Noticed In '28 Days Later'

(#10) The Opening Scene Is Based On Real War Crimes

    From IMDB

Alex Garland and Danny Boyle did a great deal of research into social unrest, drawing ideas from things that had happened in Rwanda and Sierra Leone (such as the piling of bodies inside churches), but drew the line at using any actual footage from such incidents in the opening montage. All footage featuring dead bodies/desecration of bodies was faked.

(#12) Jim Survives By Acting More Like The Infected

    From YouTuber Olivia987

I love the transformation in Jim in this scene, finally adapted to the dog eat dog world he now lives in. When he stabs the soldier, there's no one-liner, just collected rage. In fact the reason he survives (I feel) is because he acts like an Infected who can reason and calculate.

    (#14) Jim's Postcard Has A Deeper Meaning

    From IMDB

The Bible verse on Jim's postcard is from the Book of Nahum. Nahum was a prophet who predicted the destruction of the great city of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian empire. It was to be utterly destroyed as a punishment for its inhabitants' sins.
