The Victoria Cross is Britain’s highest medal of Honour, awarded in 1856 by Queen Victoria at the request of her husband, Albert, Prince Consort, for acts of bravery in the Crimean War. After that, all the brave men and women who died or did meritorious service in Britain’s Foreign Wars would also be awarded the Victoria Cross. The tool generated a list of 16 British soldiers who had contributed to the war in Afghanistan, all of whom were awarded the Victoria Cross for a variety of reasons.

In the 19th century, Afghanistan was seen as an important buffer zone in British-ruled north-west India. These men and women were sent on missions to maintain the political security of Afghanistan and Britain during the 1878 and the Second Afghan War of 1880. Many of them were given Victoria Cross for distinguished service in battle, or for injury or death, as a tribute to their bravery on the battlefield.
