  (#11) Introducing Kids To These Concepts Early On Normalizes Them

  According to some psychologists, talking to and teaching children about homosexuality and the realities of gender fluidity at an early age can help to normalize those concepts. Therefore, seeing gay people treated as just another part of the world in Cardcaptor Sakura was likely hugely influential on a generation of young viewers. It's likely that we'll only see more and more conversations about gender and sexuality with children as time goes on. In fact, California passed legislation in 2017 to teach more LGBT gender identity idealogy in the public school system.

  (#12) In 'Cardcaptor Sakura,' No One Cares If You're Gay

  It can not be overstated how much of a non-issue it is being gay in the world of Cardcaptor Sakura. There's zero homophobia. It's just as normal for a guy to like a guy as it is for a guy to like a girl. Both the 10-year-old leads and the adult characters never question it. Love is such a huge theme of this series that to deny it to anyone, especially gay characters, just wouldn't fit.

  (#4) Toya Is Both Macho And Bisexual

  It's one thing for series to hit the gay and lesbian sides of LGBT, but it's much less common to get into bisexual territory. Cardcaptor Sakura establishes that while Toya has had some serious feelings for women before (in the case of Kaho), his affections are now squarely focused on Yukito. Toya is more of a traditionally masculine guy, but that doesn't stop him trying to act on his feelings. Cardcaptor Sakura shatters stereotypes left and right.

  (#10) Male Characters Can Be Weak And Open Up About Their Feelings

  A lot of homophobia, especially towards gay men, can come from the perception that guys can't be "weak." In Cardcaptor Sakura, however, all the male characters, especially Yukito, are open about what's going on with them emotionally and aren't afraid to cry it out if needed. The way they eschew traditional masculine stereotypes and embrace emotional openness and honesty allows for a much richer, deeper form of storytelling.

  (#8) The Dub Tried To Cut Out All The Queer Coding

  While eliminating the queer subtext (and text) from a series sounds terrible, the American dub (named Cardcaptors) actually tried to cut out all romance in the show. Even the main heterosexual love story between Sakura and Syaoran was heavily edited down to the point of non-existence. Any romantic drama was deemed too "adult" for a children's series.

  (#7) Syaoran Has A Crush On Yukito

  In Syaoran's first full appearance, he tries to take on Yukito in a fight but is stopped cold by the sight of him. He blushes and runs away, embarrassed. For the next chunk of the series, Syaoran can barely function around Yukito and even discusses his crush with Sakura. While it's later revealed this was only because he sensed the magical being within Yukito, it's still wonderful to see the lead male character of a series get a crush on a guy and not go through an over-the-top emotional identity crisis. It's just handled as a matter of course.
