About This Tool

The National Medal of Science Award, the National Medal of Science’s highest Award for outstanding scientific achievement, is the Nobel Prize in the United States, established by Congress in 1959. The award is presented annually by the president of the United States.

The number of awardees per year varies from subject to subject, and awards are given mainly to individuals who have made significant achievements in the fields of physical science, biological science, mathematics and engineering. The first award was given in 1962. The winners are world-renowned scientists and engineers. So far a total of 425 outstanding scientists have been awarded this honor.
