  • (#16) Bad Girl

    • Madonna

Madonna and director David Fincher (of Se7en and Zodiac fame) have a long history of making videos together, but "Bad Girl" has the most Fincher-like horror elements of all of their collaborations.

Based on the late-1970s thriller Looking for Mr. Goodbar, "Bad Girl" follows Madonna playing a woman who is at the whims of her self-destructive habits, especially when it comes to men. An angel (Christopher Walken) tries to protect her from herself, but he's unable to do so when one of the men she goes home with ends her life.

  • (#10) 'Donkey Rhubarb' By Aphex Twin, Directed By David Slade

Aphex Twin is known for his unsettling videos, so it's no wonder he enlisted director David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days Of Night) to tackle "Donkey Rhubarb."

The video features the electronic musician (Richard David James) as several not-so-cuddly teddy bears, all of which bear his maniacal grin.

  • (#8) Losing My Religion

    • R.E.M.

The extremely stylized and brightly colored music video for "Losing My Religon" was directed by Tarsem Singh, who later directed the The Cell, a movie about a crook psychologist who enters the mind of a serial slayer.

Originally, singer Michael Stipe wanted a more straighforward narrative for the video, but Singh insisted on a "dreamlike" landscape with angels and Indian iconography. That vision turned the project into a dream: The music video won six MTV Awards, one of which was for best video, and a Grammy for best short-form video in 1991.

  • (#7) 'Dancing in the Dark' By Bruce Springsteen, Directed By Brian De Palma

There's nothing about "Dancing in the Dark" that suggests legendary horror director Brian De Palma (Carrie, The Fury, Scarface) had a hand in its direction, as it has none of his signature touches. The video is straight from concert footage recorded over two nights at the Saint Paul Civic Center in Minnesota.

Toward the end of the video, Courteney Cox is invited on stage to dance with Springsteen, who had no idea she was an actress (this was pre-Friends) until after the fact. De Palma was brought in to direct as Springsteen was unhappy with original director Jeff Stein's work.

  • (#9) More Human Than Human

    • White Zombie

The director of the House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, and the revamped Halloween franchise, Rob Zombie directed his own music video. Before his career as a filmmaker, Zombie was the lead singer of White Zombie, and his love of all things ghoulish and retro were apparent from the beginning.

"More Human Than Human" is thought to be inspired by Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - and by association, Blade Runner - and was Zombie's first time in the director's chair.

  • (#12) Rabbit in Your Headlights

    • Unkle, Thom Yorke

Jonathan Glazer (Birth, Under the Skin) directed the international music video of the year. "Rabbit in Your Headlights" follows an unstable man (Denis Lavant) as he walks through a traffic tunnel talking to himself. Every so often, he gets hit by a car, but gets up and keeps going.

As the last car approaches, he stands defiant with arms outstretched, and as it hits him, it falls to pieces. Glazer's best work is a bit surreal, and the way he bends reality is extremely prevalent in this music video.
