(#1) 1992 Dodge Viper
Hard as it might be to admit, the one car that truly stirred the souls of young gearheads in the '90s looks hopelessly dated today. The infection of aero styling and lack of character are so obvious now. And the wheels! The Earth will run out of "LOLs" before you're done with those. -
(#3) Nissan GT-R R34
I know, I know. But the greatest of all GT-Rs, that legend of Japanese performance, would never sell today. Primarily because of BMW. The GT-R's target was the BMW M3, and it's no coincidence that it looks a bit like one. But the GT-R has moved upmarket, and its target's styling has changed. While some of us would love to buy a brand new R34, there's no way it would compete in today's market. -
(#4) 1997 Plymouth Prowler
In the Prowler's defense, it was sort of apredecessor to the hugely successful PT Cruiser. And it was a cool idea, especially given the public's response to the retro-styled Viper. It's hard to say what makes this car so awful. The pasitche design hurts, yes, but the Prowler's one unforgivable sin was performing like a Honda Civic despite looking like an old school hot rod. -
(#7) Ford Crown Victoria
- Ford
-
(#8) 1995 Toyota Camry
Never in the history of man has a car been so deliberately bland, so purposefully inoffensive, so soul-shatteringly boring as the 1990s Toyota Camry. Granted, the fact that it was about as offensive as elevator music was the secret of the Camry's success. But that doesn't excuse it for being elevator music. -
(#9) 1999 Dodge Intrepid
When it was introduced, Dodge's Intrepid (sibling to the Chrysler 300M) was a really groundbreaking car. Based in large part on the Lamborghini Portofino concept, the Intrepid was a statement in cab-forward architecture and aero perfection. But both of those things died in 2000, and the Intrepid died with them. -
(#12) 1996 Ford Explorer
America's most popular SUV was a legend in its own time - a time in which blandness ruled automotive design. With updated mechanicals, stability control, some amenities, and different front fascia, the old Explorer would probably sell today. But as it stands, nobody would go out of their way to buy one. -
(#13) 1996 Ford Taurus
Pictured here is the SHO model, a V-8 powered study in all that is wonderfully ridiculous. But not even SHO treatment could hide the organic "oval" theme of the base Taurus. To its credit, the Taurus did look a bit like a Mazda RX-7 from the rear, but that was the only view of the thing that wasn't completely humiliating. -
(#15) Geo Metro
- Geo, Chevrolet
-
(#16) Cadillac Catera
- General Motors, Opel
