Leelanau County is a county in the northwestern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, USA, bordering Lake Michigan on the west. It covers an area of 6,559 square kilometers. According to estimates from the 2000 U.S. Census, there are a total of 21,119 people. The county seat is Leland. Founded in 1840. The county name is a word coined by the American geographer and geologist Henry Schoolcraft (Henry Schoolcraft).
