About This Tool
The International Hydrographic Organization (Iho) is the predecessor of the International Hydrographic Office (IHB) , which was established in 1921. The name IHO was adopted in a revision of an international agreement among member states in 1970. IHB, however, is retained as the executive branch, based in Monaco, and consists of three elected principals and a staff member. In the 19th century, many coastal states established specialized hydrographic institutions to improve the navigation of navies and merchant ships by providing nautical charts, nautical publications and other navigational services. However, there are many differences and divergences in hydrographic mapping and other published data. In 1889, an international maritime conference was held in Washington, D. C. to propose the establishment of a permanent international commission in this field. Similar proposals were made at the two international maritime conferences held at the St. Petersburg in 1908 and 1912.
