  • Montgomery Scott on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#1) Montgomery Scott

    • Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Trek

Who He Is: Montgomery Scott is the chief engineer on both the USS Enterprise and then the Enterprise-A under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. He builds a reputation for being something of a miracle worker, which is partly based on his ability to accomplish tasks in half the time he says is possible - but also by always quoting twice as much time as he needs. He is eventually promoted to Captain, but disappears from the historical record later in life.

Why He's So Lucky: Scotty makes his own luck in most situations, as he is quick to make friends with people, and is relied upon by the entire crew.

Luckiest Moment: While on his way to retire at the Norpin colony, Scotty's ship collides with the outer shell of a Dyson sphere. Unable to take off or summon help, he and his fellow engineer, Matt Franklin, have little choice other than locking their transporter patterns in the system's buffer - where they remain for 75 years.

His luckiest moment comes when he is freed from the transporter by the crew of the Enterprise-D. Sadly, Franklin's pattern is too degraded to be recovered, and he is lost forever.

  • Seven of Nine on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#2) Seven of Nine

    • Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek

Who She Is: Seven of Nine is just a young girl named Annika when she is assimilated by the Borg. She grows up as a member of the Collective, which makes it hard for her to acclimate with the crew of the Voyager. She is an incredibly intelligent engineer, and her knowledge of the Borg helps Captain Janeway in her ongoing conflict with the powerful aliens.

Why She's So Lucky: Because Janeway takes a shine to the former Borg right away, Seven of Nine finds luck in her acceptance on the Voyager. This saves her life countless times.

Luckiest Moment: In the original Voyager timeline, Seven of Nine perishes before the crew reaches Earth. Janeway, despite getting the Voyager home, can't forgive herself for failing to save Seven and defies orders to travel back in time. Through the aged admiral's interference, a new timeline is created in which Voyager ends up on Earth with most of its crew unharmed.

It could be argued that Seven of Nine is one of the luckiest people in the universe, as Janeway's decision to defy Starfleet's temporal directives gives her a literal second chance at life.

  • Khan Noonien Singh on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#3) Khan Noonien Singh

    • Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek

Who He Is: A genetically modified human who rises to prominence during the Eugenics Wars of the late 20th century to become the tyrannical ruler of more than a quarter of Earth's population. He and his followers flee persecution in a sleeper ship called the SS Botany Bay, which is how he is discovered and revived in the 23rd century.

Why He's So Lucky: In terms of genetics, Khan wins the genetic lottery, but he would argue that he makes his own luck through pure strength of will, superior tactics, and a genius-level intelligence.

Luckiest Moment: By all rights, Khan should have perished shortly after Kirk exiled him to Ceti Alpha V. A cataclysm on the next planet over, Ceti Alpha VI, wipes out most of the indigenous life on the planet, including Khan's wife. The surviving planet is knocked into a new orbit, turning it into a wasteland. While none of that is lucky, what follows certainly is.

The events of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan only occur because Starfleet fails to do its homework. The organization completely overlooks the fact that an entire planet has blown up and been replaced by its neighbor. No sooner does the USS Reliant land on Ceti Alpha V than Khan and his people subdue the crew and seek revenge for their suffering. Khan's lucky that Chekov didn't remember where he'd seen the Botany Bay before - until it was too late to stop him from shoving a worm in his ear.

  • Quark on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#4) Quark

    • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek

Who He Is: Quark is a Ferengi who owns a bar on Deep Space Nine. He works through the Cardassian occupation and continues in his proprietorship following the handoff to the Federation. Despite being a profit-hungry Ferengi, Quark often demonstrates allegiances to his friends and bar patrons, making him occasionally trustworthy and an important figure on board the station.

Why He's So Lucky: Despite constantly committing offenses and doing nearly anything he can do to earn a profit, he has escaped incarceration multiple times. His ability to think on his feet usually gets him out of a jam, and he never pays much of a price for his misdeeds.

Luckiest Moment: When Quark learns that his mother is involved with the Grand Nagus, he quickly becomes elevated as a Ferengi due to his close connection to the leader of his people. Through several different events, he becomes one of the most important people in Ferengi society - until his brother ultimately becomes Nagus instead of him.

It may seem like a bum rap for Quark, but his brother Rom loves him unconditionally, meaning Quark is probably better situated in his culture than if he became the Nagus himself.

  • Tom Paris on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#5) Tom Paris

    • Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek

Who He Is: Tom Paris grows up under the umbrella of the Federation, as his father, Admiral Paris is a prominent member of the organization. He is a flight officer and helmsman with excellent skills, but he often finds himself getting into trouble with the law.

Why He's So Lucky: Believe it or not, Tom is lucky because he ends up on Voyager. Sure, he has to make a 70,000-light-year trip to get from one end of the galaxy to the other, but his road to redemption comes from that journey where he earns the respect and admiration of his crew.

Luckiest Moment: After reaching an unprecedented Warp 10 in the Cochrane, Paris rapidly mutates into a hideous amphibian, abducts Captain Janeway, and speeds off to a jungle planet. He could have spent the rest of his unnatural life as a frog monster in a swamp, but the Voyager crew tracks him down and administers some anti-proton treatment to bring him back to normal. Luckily, this incident is never mentioned again.

  • Wesley Crusher on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#6) Wesley Crusher

    • Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek Nemesis, Star Trek

Who He Is: The son of Dr. Beverly Crusher, Wesley grows up on the USS Enterprise-D. He quickly demonstrates his academic brilliance, and is given a position as an acting Ensign to help his education and give him experience working on a starship.

Why He's So Lucky: Wesley is a genius, and his ability to quickly and easily solve problems makes him a vital member of the Enterprise's crew, despite being just a child.

More importantly, despite Captain Picard's general coldness toward children, the fact that Wesley's father perished under his command - and that he still harbors feelings towards Wesley's mother - makes him more lenient with Wesley. This basically gives Wesley a front seat to the most exciting discoveries of the 24th century.

Luckiest Moment: Wesley impresses a visiting alien who is ostensibly working on a warp drive upgrade, but is actually trying to use the ship's technology for his own purposes. The alien, referred to as The Traveler, sees something in Wesley, and years later returns to take Wesley from the United Federation of Planets and on to unimaginable adventures.

  • Odo on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#7) Odo

    • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek

Who He Is: Though his origins are initially unknown, it is eventually revealed that Odo is a member of a species who call themselves Changelings, but are referred to as "The Founders" by those they have subjugated in their quadrant of the galaxy.

Why He's So Lucky: Odo is a Founder and, as a result, is revered by roughly one-fourth of the species in the Milky Way. Additionally, he is a shapeshifter who has been accepted by the people aboard DS9, which includes members of the Federation and Bajor.

Luckiest Moment: Odo is one of 100 Changelings that were sent out into the void of space in an attempt to see what information they could acquire. While still a juvenile, Odo happens to be located in the Bajoran system where Doctor Mora Pol finds him, learns of his sentience, and teaches him how to live in society.

Because of Odo's unique role on DS9, he is able to provide key information on his species to the Federation and help them devise strategies to fight them. He is ultimately instrumental in ending the conflict.

  • Reginald Barclay on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#8) Reginald Barclay

    • Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek

Who He Is: Lieutenant Reginald Barclay lands a position on board the USS Enterprise-D, but due to his nervousness and lack of confidence, he stammers often and ends up causing a lot of problems for the rest of the crew. Despite this, he continues in his career to eventually help in the creation of the Emergency Medical Hologram at Jupiter Station.

Barclay later helps bridge the unfathomable gap of communications between the USS Voyager and the rest of Starfleet when the former winds up on the wrong side of the galaxy.

Why He's So Lucky: Despite being a bumbling fool half the time, Reg becomes a trusted member of the crew. Lt. Cdr. La Forge cuts him a lot more slack than most would in his position, and this results in his continued advancement in Starfleet.

Luckiest Moment: Barclay's Starfleet career includes such incredible highs and abysmal lows that picking one moment is difficult. It could be that time he contracts "Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome," which Dr. Crusher names after him, but doesn't mutate into an alien spider. It could also be when Captain Picard chooses not to transfer him off the ship for spending all his free time - and work time - in the holodeck. Or perhaps it's the fact that he is able to achieve any success in Starfleet despite his crippling phobia of transporters.

  • Guinan on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#9) Guinan

    • Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek Nemesis, Star Trek

Who She Is: Guinan is an El-Aurian, an enigmatic race of aliens referred to as "listeners" that were scattered across space by the Borg. She is also the bartender in Ten Forward, where she provides guidance and advice to the Captain and his crew.

Why She's So Lucky: Guinan has proven her dependability, and for this, she is entirely trusted by Captain Picard. The two have known each other for years prior to his taking command of the Enterprise, and his reliance on her insight leads the other crew members to have faith in her as well.

Luckiest Moment: In "Yesterday's Enterprise," a rift in time alters reality so that the Federation is in the midst of a bloody conflict with the Klingons. Of course, it's not possible to know you're trapped in an alternate reality - unless you happen to be Guinan.

Guinan informs the Captain of her suspicions about something being wrong with their timeline, though cannot articulate any reason beyond it being "a feeling" she has. Despite the ambiguity of her information, the Captain takes an incredible tactical risk in trusting her, and the Enterprise returns to its normal timeline.

  • Miles O'Brien on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#10) Miles O'Brien

Who He Is: Senior Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien begins his Starfleet career fighting in the Federation-Cardassian War, but later ends up working as the transporter chief on the USS Enterprise-D. After that posting, he is transferred to DS9, where he works as Chief of Operations before settling into a life of teaching at Starfleet Academy.

Why He's So Lucky: Few people, O'Brien included, would consider him lucky. In fact, he's one of the unluckiest people in Starfleet, considering all the terrible catastrophes, horrific conflicts, possessions, kidnappings, temporal paradoxes, and dangerous mishaps he's involved with. That being said, the man somehow survives each and every time. By simply being alive, and living to retirement, he's shown just how lucky he truly is.

Luckiest Moment: Despite not wanting to associate closely with Dr. Bashir, the Doc manages to break through O'Brien's tough exterior, and the two men become the closest of friends. Meeting the doctor and failing to push him away is truly O'Brien's luckiest moment.

  • Geordi La Forge on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#11) Geordi La Forge

    • Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Chains of Betrayal, Star Trek Nemesis, Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek Generations, Star Trek

Who He Is: Lieutenant Junior Grade Geordi La Forge advances quickly through the ranks of the Enterprise to become the chief engineer with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He is a brilliant engineer and one of the smartest people in all of Starfleet where warp mechanics are concerned.

Why He's So Lucky: To be fair, Geordi isn't incredibly lucky. He's been subjected to heartbreak, deadly terrors, and horrific mishaps. Also, he's born completely blind. Ultimately, Geordi's luck stems from his ability to overcome all the hardships of his life to become a significant member of Starfleet.

Luckiest Moment: When he is 5, Geordi receives a VISOR, which makes it possible to see the world around him, albeit not in the same way as most people. This event changes his life and helps set him on the path that would lead to his life of success and well-deserved respect.

  • Benjamin Sisko on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#12) Benjamin Sisko

    • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek

Who He Is: Benjamin Sisko comes to DS9 a Commander but is eventually promoted to the rank of Captain. He works as the administrative head of the station - where he lives with his son, Jake - in order to bring Bajor into the Federation.

Why He's So Lucky: It is eventually revealed that Sisko is "fated" to lead DS9 due to the intervention of the aliens that live in the wormhole near Bajor. These wormhole aliens, or Prophets, possessed Sisko's mother to ensure that she gave birth to him. Living in a non-linear time space, the aliens know that Sisko's life will ultimately lead him to DS9 to become their Emissary.

As the Emissary, Sisko is considered a holy man in the eyes of many people on Bajor. This helps him maintain a tenuous peace between the Bajorans, the Federation, and Cardassia.

Luckiest Moment: When the nigh-omnipotent Q attempts to wreak havoc on the space station, a riled Sisko punches him in the face - which is about the same as punching God in the face. Perhaps due to divine intervention, Sisko receives no reprisal.

  • Jonathan Archer on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#13) Jonathan Archer

    • Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek

Who He Is: Prior to the creation of the United Federation of Planets, a fledgling Starfleet chose Captain Jonathan Archer as the first commander of the Enterprise NX-01, the planet's first fully functional warp-capable starship. Archer helps explore the galaxy, and it is through his command Earth is able to make contact with many previously unknown alien species.

Why He's So Lucky: Despite being the type of officer who runs headfirst into almost every possible situation, his actions get results that somehow don't result in the demise of his crew or the destruction of his ship. He is remembered by historian John Gill as the "greatest explorer of the 22nd century," and is often credited as being one of the main people who helped launch the UFP (and later come to lead it as one of its earliest presidents).

Luckiest Moment: In 2150, Archer is chosen to command the Enterprise NX-01 over his greatest rival, Captain Robinson. The two have a long-running adversarial relationship due to their competitiveness with one another as they progressed through their careers, but it is Archer who is chosen to lead the first human starship.

Of course, being the son of famed warp scientist Henry Archer probably didn't hurt his chances...

  • Kasidy Yates on Random Luckiest Characters In The ‘Star Trek’ Franchis

    (#14) Kasidy Yates

Who She Is: A human pilot who isn't a member of Starfleet, Kasidy Yates commands a freighter via her company, Kasidy Yates Interstellar Freights. When she initially shows up as a love interest for Captain Sisko, she isn't affiliated with the UFP or Bajor, but over time, she begins working for the Bajoran Ministry of Commerce.

Why She's So Lucky: Due to her relationship with Captain Sisko, she has his ear, as well as his occasional looking the other way when she does something shady. Granted, she gets in trouble when she crosses the line, but it always works out for her in the end.

Luckiest Moment: When Kasidy does cross that line, Sisko is the one who apprehends her. She is charged with the unlawful transport of devices and supplies to freedom fighters, which lands her in prison. Nothing lucky about that, but when she finishes her stint in prison, she immediately resumes her relationship with the man who sent her away - and no one bats an eye at her or Sisko.
