About This Tool

The first Black Legion (but not in combat) was actually formed in the confederate states: the Louisiana Native Guard. After Louisiana left the Covenant, the Black Liberators of New Orleans wanted to show their loyalty to the state. There are about 25,000 people in the area, most of them French speakers. On April 22, 1861, a public meeting was held at the Catholic College. About 1,500 black people signed their names and joined the state militia. On 29 May, the governor formally accepted the regiment into the militia and appointed three white officers to command it.
