About This Tool

The power of the House of Lords to administer justice is an ancient one. In the 19th century, an attempt was made to abolish the jurisdiction of the House of Lords, mainly on the grounds that the members of the House of Lords were not all judicial men and that not every member of parliament knew the law. But for a variety of reasons, the compromise ended with a certain number of judges becoming members of the House of Lords. This was the Law Lords, created by the Appellate Jurisdiction Act of 1876, which established the pattern of appellate cases in the House of Lords. The Lords of Appeal in Ordinary.
