About This Tool

The London Eye opened in late 1999 when it was sponsored by British Airways, hence the name Millennium Wheel, with a total height of 135m (443ft). The London Eye has 32 cabins (numbers 1 through 33), no 13 because of religious taboos, and air conditioning because they are made of toughened glass. Each capsule can carry about 25 passengers and rotate at a speed of about 0.26 meters per second, or 30 minutes for a lap. The “London Eye” was built to celebrate the new millennium, hence the name “Millennium Ferris Wheel”. Passengers can take the London eye up in the air and get a bird’s-eye view of London. The “London Eye” at night is transformed into a huge blue halo, greatly adding to the dreaminess of the Thames. The London eye also lit up the 2015 general election, with red lights for labor, blue for the conservatives, purple for the UK Independence Party, and yellow for the Lib Dems.
