  When many anime fans think about the concept of honor, Kenshin Himura is the first character to come to mind. In his early life, he was a mercenary who took countless lives. He eventually realized that there was no way he could continue his bloody path, and that he would pursue a life of peace. While he'll use violence if he absolutely has to in order to defend his loved ones, he always tries to resolve things peacefully. He truly believes in the sanctity of all life, no matter what.

  Mumen Rider isn't a high ranking or even particularly talented hero, but the one thing that makes him truly special is his honor. He wants to create a safe world for people to live in, so he's willing to put his life on the line when villains show their faces. It doesn't matter if he thinks he stands a chance at winning, he won't back down because he considers that to be his duty.

  • Yu Yu Hakusho

  Kazuma Kuwabara lives by a strict code of honor - wanting to fight every man who comes at him with his full vigor, refusing to fight women under any circumstances, and staying loyal to his friends. This sometimes leads to taking on opponents who are more powerful than he is when he's gravely injured, or letting female opponents beat the snot out of him because he refuses to hit a lady, but he still won't back down from his principles even when others advise him to do so.

  (#4) Tenya Iida - 'My Hero Academia'

  Tenya Iida begins My Hero Academia with a moral code that largely revolves around following the rules. Any attempt on his classmates' part to sidestep the rules or fail to put full effort into something is met with criticism. 

  Later in the series, Tenya's morals are tested. After Stain attacks his brother Tensei, Tenya breaks the rules and tries to fight Stain one-on-one. While he breaks his original code and puts himself in danger, he's still being honorable here - just in a completely different way than he ever has been.

  • Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, Fate/Zero

  Saber is a servant whose primary purpose in life is to win the Holy Grail War - but she isn't going to compromise her morals to get there. Underhanded tricks won't do for Saber, she'd much rather have a direct, one-on-one confrontation with her enemy, even if it means risking her own safety. Her code of ethics leads her into repeated conflicts with Kiritsugu during the Fourth War, as he has a more strategic mindset.

  (#6) Rimuru Tempest - 'That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime'

  Despite being a seemingly lowly slime, Rimuru Tempest is actually one of the most powerful creatures in the world he inhabits. However, he never uses that power in a dishonorable way. As soon as he neutralizes a conflict, he immediately starts trying to integrate them into his blossoming community. When he makes a promise - as he does when he agrees to rescue Shizu's students - he keeps it.

  (#7) Senku - 'Dr. Stone'

  Senku might not immediately seem like an honorable person - after all, he loves nothing more than tricking people through scientific means. But underneath all the joking, he's a person who truly stands by his principles. Rather than lie to Tsukasa and promise to give up science - or actually give it up - he opts to let Tsukasa end his life.

  Later in the series, he's willing to risk his own safety because he thinks that leaving Chrome behind is the best chance the world has for scientific advancement. He claims to be selfish and devious, but his allegiance is with his core beliefs, and he'll sacrifice pretty much anything for them.

  (#8) Mob Kageyama - 'Mob Psycho 100'

  In contrast to his mentor Reigen, Mob Kageyama doesn't have a conniving bone in his body. Instead, he's a deeply honorable and kind young boy who is loyal to his friends, straightforward, and fair with his enemies. He never hurts anyone who he believes to be innocent, and he takes a light, forgiving hand with those who do wrong.

  Because he's twelve years old and inexperienced both in battle and in his feelings, he's occasionally pushed past his emotional capacity and loses control of his powers but his heart is firmly in the right place.

  • Naruto

  There are a lot of honorable characters in Naruto, but because he's also a villain, Kimimaro is an usual case. Kimimaro is one of Orochimaru's most loyal henchmen. He believes that the sole purpose of his formidable powers is to help other people, not to serve his own needs. While he does dedicate himself to Orochimaru, it's because he comes to the mistaken conclusion that this is the morally correct thing to do. 

  When it comes to his opponents, however, he fights with the utmost honor. For example, when he takes on Rock Lee, he actually stops the battle long enough for Rock Lee to take a dose of what Lee believes is 'medicine' - proving that he doesn't want to have any unfair advantages over his opponent.

  (#10) Chise Hatori - 'The Ancient Magus' Bride'

  It takes a while for Chise Hatori to come into the more honorable version of herself - when viewers first meet her, she's sunken into a deep depression and doesn't have the emotional energy to consider how she interacts with the rest of the world. But as she begins to heal, she develops a strong code of ethics that she refuses to budge on, and holds everyone else to the same standards.

  Not only does she take on a dragon's curse to save the life of a baby dragon, she becomes furious with Elias when he tries to sacrifice a little girl to save her from the curse, and demands that he stop. To Chise, sacrificing someone else for her own sake is unacceptable, but she must take risks to help others.

  (#11) Jonathan Joestar

  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

  Above all, Jonathan Joestar values behaving like a gentleman. This means dressing smartly, but it also means approaching his opponants as equals deserving of his respect. No matter how dangerous his enemies, he will take them on directly, forgoing any stategies that might improve his outcome but would seem sneaky or underhanded. His personality stands in stark contrast to his adopted brother Dio, one of the major antagonists of the series.

  (#12) Emma - 'The Promised Neverland'

  When Emma finds out that she and her friends are being raised as meat for a race of demons, she's naturally terrified, but quickly decides that she wants to find a way to escape. The thing that makes her honorable is her steadfast refusal to leave anyone behind - even the babies and toddlers who couldn't possibly understand why they were leaving or keep up with the escape.

  Eventually, she agrees to do so if they can find a way to assure the children's safety, but she refuses to simply abandon them to their fates.

  (#13) Yuri - 'Megalo Box'

  Yuri is considered to be one of the most talented Megalo Boxers in the industry, and that's partially because of the gear that's been surgically connected to his body. When he meets Joe, a scrappy underdog who's been tearing up the competition despite not having any gear at all, Yuri realizes that what he has is not true strength. He wants to face Yuri one-on-one, with only their bodies on the line. To accomplish this, he has his gear removed, an intensely painful procedure that not only risks his health, but also makes him less likely to win. Nevertheless, he insists upon doing it, because in his mind that's the only way to face his opponent with honor.

  • Revolutionary Girl Utena

  Ever since she was a little girl, Utena Tenjou has wanted to be a prince. To her, this means chivalrous and honorable behavior, and an unassailable moral code. When she discovers that Anthy Himemiya is being treated poorly by the mysterious school council, she refuses to accept it and immediately challenges Anthy's 'fiance' to a duel. Throughout the rest of the series, she approaches the increasingly weird secrets she discovers with honor and grace.

  (#15) Yuugo Hachiken - 'Silver Spoon'

  Most honorable anime characters appear in shonen anime or other action-oriented genres - understandable, since those characters often face situations that test their honor in dramatic ways. But characters can display honor in more subtle ways, too.

  Yuugo Hachiken is an agricultural student who takes his work seriously. When tasked with making bacon, he decides that it isn't enough to simply handle the meat - he has to take on every part of the process, from raising the pig onwards. When he finds out that some of his classmates' families are facing financial ruin, he takes it upon himself to try and solve their problems. He considers this to be his personal responsability, and won't accept less than living up to his own ideals.
