  Hashirama's wood release kekkei genkai was considered so impressive that Orochimaru slayed 60 children in an experiment intended to replicate it. Wood release allows the user to create plant matter, specifically trees. He actually created the forest that Konoha was built on, which is part of why he became the first Hokage.

  The technique can do a whole lot more than just create trees, however. He can create functional wooden clones of himself, create houses and other complex structures made of wood, and even suppress the chakra of tailed beasts.

  Itachi Uchiha was considered one of the most powerful living members of the Uchiha clan, which is why he was chosen by Danzo to slay the rest of the family. What makes him so powerful? It's his kekkei genkai, the sharingan. This eye-based power allows users to use a variety of incredible techniques - most notably, he can copy any jutsu used by another person. After witnessing his friend Shisui take his own life, he awakened his mangekyo, the next stage of the sharingan.

  With one eye, he can use Amaterasu, which allows him to produce a fire that never goes out. With the other eye, he uses Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that distorts the targets ability to perceive time. He can also use Susanoo, a nearly impenetrable defense that takes the form of a giant glowing skeleton.

  Madara is one of the most powerful ninja in Konoha history, and he doesn't slack off in the kekkei genkai department. Starting life with the sharingan that's common to the Uchiha family, he later awakened the mangekyo shaaringan, which only appears after the user experiences severe trauma.

  Later, through splicing his DNA with Hashirama's, he was able to acquire both the rinnegan and wood release - and he can use storm release, too. Even just one of these kekkei genkai would make him into a terrifying opponent, but with all five it takes an almost godlike ability to even put a scratch on him.

  Though not the only person to possess a rinnegan, Nagato, also known by his nickname Pain, is one of the most noteworthy. Through the rinnegan, Nagato is able to use the Six Paths Technique, which involves a wide range of incredible abilities. The one that Nagato focused on the most was the Outer Path, which gave him control over life. Nagato was able to reanimate a group of lifeless bodies and use them as a proxy for his own, forcing the proxies to fight his opponents while he remained in a safe location.

  Though he was ultimately defeated by Naruto, he almost wiped out Konoha before he was taken down.

However, when he receives chakra from Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, he awakens an advanced form of the rinnegan, which affords him a nearly infinite plethora of powers.

  One of his most commonly used techniques is Amenotejikara, which lets him physically switch places with a target. He eventually gains the ability to freely travel between dimensions. With all those powers, it's amazing that he ever meets anyone he struggles to defeat.

  The byakugan is one of the more prominent kekkei genkai in the Naruto universe. It allows the user to see for miles away from them and in 360 degrees, as well as sense and target other people's chakra. Neji Hyuga was able to use it effectively at only 12 years old and steadily increased his talents every year.

  Shukaku, the tailed beast, amplifies the impact of his offensive moves. Though Gaara formerly used his abilities to negatively impact others, he now uses them for altruistic purposes.

  As the protagonist of the series, Naruto Uzumaki is naturally going to be among the most powerful.   Lava release uses a combination of fire and earth release to create actual lava. In Mei's case, the lava is acidic, making it even more formidable. Boil comprises fire and water release, creating a corrosive steam.

  Storm release is a combination of water and lighting release, and it allows the user to shoot out electricity that flows as naturally as water does. This technique is used by Darui, one of the top ninja in the Land of Lightning.

  He's a former student of the third Raikage, and now serves as one of his assistants.

  Toneri Ōtsutsuki appears in Naruto: The Last - a movie best known for being the one where Naruto and Hinata's relationship becomes official. He's a descendant of the Ōtsutsuki clan's branch family, which once lived on the moon.

  As a person, Toneri isn't that great - he is, after all, the guy who kidnaps Hinata and tries to force her to marry him, and he's trying to wipe out humanity - but his powers are formidable. He possesses not only the byakugan but also the tenseigan, which has a wide range of powers including using all five forms of chakra release, moving the moon toward Earth, and reviving a planet after it's been wiped out. If that's not OP, nothing is.

  Jugo was one of Orochimaru's followers, before ultimately breaking away to join Sasuke and form Team Taka. He has a powerful unnamed kekkei genkai that's shared by the rest of his clan. His body is constantly absorbing natural energy, which is something that most ninja require extensive training in sage jutsu to accomplish.

  Sadly, this powerful ability has a major drawback - Jugo can't control how much energy he absorbs which leads to major mental instability and violent behavior. This is actually why he submitted himself to Orochimaru - he wanted help controlling his rages so that he could act on his pacifist beliefs.

  Sakon and Ukon come as a pair, because these brothers literally share a body. Their kekkei genkai has no name, but it's incredible nevertheless. They are able to break their bodies down to the cellular level, and recompose them however they like. Often, they use this to merge with each other, but they can also merge with enemies to wipe out their cells.

  Sakon usually controls their merged body, but occasionally goes dormant if he needs to heal from an injury - the two are able to rapidly heal themselves when merged.
