  • Daenerys Targaryen on Random Fictional Characters Whose Ages You Were Totally Wrong About

    (#3) Daenerys Targaryen

    • Game of Thrones, A Song of Ice and Fire

While Emilia Clarke was well into her 20s when she began playing the Mother of Dragons on HBO's crossover hit Game of Thrones, the Targaryen heir was a bit more, ahem, juvenile in the novels. Daenerys is only 13 years old when she is married off to Khal Drogo in the first book of the series.

Barely into puberty, everyone's favorite Khaleesi is just as badass on the page as she is on the screen. It's just better to forget that she would be an 8th grader in contemporary times when reading her EXTREMELY graphic sex scenes.

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi on Random Fictional Characters Whose Ages You Were Totally Wrong About

    (#13) Obi-Wan Kenobi

    • Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars

The Star Wars films take place over a long period of time. From Anakin Skywalker's childhood to his grandson's emo phase, the series covers a lot of ground. Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the only human characters we see as a connecting thread, and he ages... interestingly.

In The Phantom Menace, Kenobi is 25. This seems pretty reasonable - he's an apprentice to Qui-Gon Jinn and he looks to be around that age. Cut to the next film, Attack of the Clones, 10 year later, and he looks EXACTLY the same. While he matures slightly in Revenge of the Sith, which takes 3 years later, he still looks nowhere near 38. And if one makes the argument that Jedi just happen to age really well, because of the Force or whatever, that's clearly not the case in his final appearance. Although only 19 years have passed between Episodes III and IV, Obi-Wan now seems to be around 5,000 years old. He certainly doesn't look 57, but maybe that's just part of the whole "old wise man" bit.

  • Chewbacca on Random Fictional Characters Whose Ages You Were Totally Wrong About

    (#11) Chewbacca

    • Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars Episode VII, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars Holiday Special, Star Wars

At the beginning of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Chewbacca is already 200 years old, according to many fan sites. Return of the Jedi takes place 4 years after A New Hope, so he's 204 years old during that film.

Therefore he's around 234 by the time of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Force Awakens, yet he barely looks to have aged (in stark contrast to the much older Han Solo). While Chewbacca is already ancient by human standards, Wookiees have an average lifespan of 400 years. He's barely into middle age, and 34 years is no time at all to him.

Chewbacca's longevity also adds a new layer to his relationship with Han Solo. Solo basically has the lifespan of a domestic dog compared to the Wookie. Makes you wonder how many other "best friends" Chewie has had over the centuries.

  • Juliet Capulet on Random Fictional Characters Whose Ages You Were Totally Wrong About

    (#16) Juliet Capulet

    • Romeo and Juliet, Romeo + Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Gnomeo & Juliet, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo & Juliet, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo & Juliet vs. the Living Dead, Romeo & Juliet: Sealed with a Kiss, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet in Yiddish, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo & Juliet, Romeo and Juliet on Ice, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet, Roméo et Juliette

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet has endured through the ages as THE archetypal story of star-crossed lovers. Full of heightened emotions, drama, rebellion against familial ties, the play does start to make more sense when you remember that Juliet is a newly-minted teenager. As the play goes, "My child is yet a stranger in the world/She hath not seen the change of fourteen years." The 13 year old's immediate commitment to Romeo does smack of a certain childlike conviction when you think about it.

  • Optimus Prime on Random Fictional Characters Whose Ages You Were Totally Wrong About

    (#10) Optimus Prime

    • The Transformers, Transformers: Prime, Transformers: The Ride - 3D, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Transformers, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, The Transformers: The Movie, Transformers Prime: One Shall Stand, Transformers

Initially known as Orion Pax, because giant transforming trucks aren't exactly known for subtlety, Optimus Prime made his living as a dock worker during the Golden Age of Cybertron. Oh, and that was nine million years ago. Yes, around four million years before the first human-like apes appeared on Earth, Orion Pax was chilling on Cybertron with a robot girlfriend named Ariel. Which, also, pick a side ancient Transformers robot names. Either pick weird names like Megatron or regular names like Ariel.

Anyway, Orion Pax was upgraded to become Optimus Prime, the first Autobot, and served as their leader for nine million years. It's also unknown how long he was living as Orion Pax, but presumably the fancy changing metal truck man could have memories stretching back to the Triassic period. That's a lot of RAM.

  • Professor Oak on Random Fictional Characters Whose Ages You Were Totally Wrong About

    (#14) Professor Oak

    • Pokémon Franchise

Professor Oak represents the venerable wise old man archetype for a generation of gamers. Anyone who grew up playing the original Pokémon games cannot help but think of the Pokémon Professor as a fount of decades worth of experience and wisdom. But in reality, he's only about 47 years old.

How do we know his age? Professor Oak appears as a young boy, Sam, in the movie Pokémon 4Ever: Celebi: Voice of the Forest, who has traveled 40 years into the future. Ash befriends the young Oak, who is around the same age as him.

Not only is he younger than we thought, he also has a ten-year-old grandson. No matter how you do the math, that does not make him seem responsible.
