  • (#1) Maes Hughes

Last Words: "Hey, hey, cut me some slack. I've got a wife and kid at home."

Indeed he does. The kind, caring, cheery Maes Hughes is one person who definitely does not deserve to go. Worst of all, you know he's never going back to see his family, and soon, that same family will have to bury him.

The fact that he doesn't even harm Envy (who is disguised as his wife at the time) on his way out just throws salt onto the wound.

  • (#2) Spike Spiegel

    • Cowboy Bebop, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

    Last Words: "Bang."

That's all he has to say. Throughout the entire Cowboy Bebop series, you grow to know and love Spike Spiegel. Then, during the very last episode, you watch him finally conclude everything to the point where you think he's going to make it out of this last epic fight.

He holds up his fingers like a gun in an ostensible gesture of triumph. Our quirky bounty hunter did it! He can finally move on with his life. Then you look at him and see how seriously injured up he is and... "Bang." Instead of walking away from the scene in glory, he collapses and fades away. It's like the show just shot a big hole in your heart where Spike used to be.

  • (#3) Zabuza Momochi

    • Naruto, Naruto Shippūden

Last Words: "I know I cannot be, but I wish I could go to where you have gone... How I wish I could join you there... Haku..."

Zabuza came rolling through Naruto as a bad dude on a bad mission. You don't really have any sympathy for him until you learn about his relationship with his young ward, Haku. Not long after Haku dies, Zabuza gets taken down.

His final sentence is so self-aware and clings so desperately to the solidarity of his life that it cuts deeper than any kunai.

  • (#4) Ushio Okazaki From 'Clannad: After Story'

Last Words: "Daddy? I love you."

In an anime about demise, both the audience and Tomoya are forced to go through an insane amount of tragedy and heartbreak. But the passing of Tomoya's child in Clannad: After Story is enough to break down even the toughest anime fan.

Although cliche, her final words before her body goes limp and passes away takes your heart and throws it into a garbage disposal. Oh, and the fact that Tomoya calls for the help of his dead wife while his daughter perishes in his arms doesn't help either.

  • (#5) Kamina

    • Gurren Lagann

    Last Words: "Later, buddy."

Although Kamina's role in Gurren Lagann is brief, it's incredibly important, dramatic, and powerful. The strong-willed and spunky Kamina convinces Simon to break out of the underground, to be free, and to not just believe in himself, but to believe in the Kamina who believes in him.

He leaves as joyously and abruptly as he came: "Later, buddy."

  • (#6) Menma From 'Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day'

    Last Words: "You found me."

After the entire tragic story behind Anohana, Menma finally has to say goodbye to the gang again, but this time, she has to do it properly. Menma is a ghost, and it's a struggle for everyone who watched her die the first time to see her again.

Ultimately, she is able to leave the physical world, but not without saying her final words to her friends and leaving everyone, including the viewer, to crumble into a pile of emotional dust.

  • (#7) Going Merry From 'One Piece'

Last Words: "You always treated me well. Thank you."

Going Merry is the very first ship that the rag-tag Straw Hat Pirates use to sail the seas in One Piece. Unfortunately, like many pirate ships, the Going Merry had to go down. When it does, it gives the crew a heartbreaking speech.

"You always treated me well. Thank you." It's enough to take your heart and rip it to shreds, even if it was "just" a ship.

  • (#8) Lelouch Lamperouge

    • Code Geass

Last Words: "Yes... I... destroy... the world... and... create it... anew."

Lelouch chooses to die. He sacrifices himself to save the world. As he lies to rest, he speaks his last words to Nunnally, his sister. After the long, rugged, bloody road Lelouch Lamperouge endures, it ends with his final act of heroism to the world.

If all this (plus the montage of his life playing in the background and Nunnally crying out desperately next to him) isn't enough to start the waterworks, you just might be a heartless monster.

  • Entei on Random Famous Anime Last Words That Will Make You Cry Like A Baby

    (#9) Entei

Last Words: "And I will miss you. Just keep me close... in your dreams."

While the Pokémon franchise is aimed at children, it's no stranger to legitimately emotional moments. In Pokémon 3: The Movie, the legendary Pokémon Entei serves as a guardian and caretaker to Molly, a young girl who recently lost her father. The movie is very clear that he's a father surrogate, created by the subconscious of a scared little girl.

It's heartbreaking, then, when Entei sacrifices himself to save the world from the influence of the Unown. His last words to Molly deeply impact the impressionable young child, and they surely led to some difficult conversations between parents and sobbing kids as they left the theater.

  • Senketsu on Random Famous Anime Last Words That Will Make You Cry Like A Baby

    (#10) Senketsu

    • Kill la Kill

Last Words: "Don't cry, Ryuko. Sailor uniforms are made to be grown out of. From now on, you're free to wear what you like. Clothes far cuter than I could ever be."

Those are the last words of Senketsu, Ryuko's faithful, empowering, and sentient clothing. Possessing a genuine, fatherly attitude toward Ryuko, Senketsu has served as solid moral support during her quest to take down her father's killer.

Not only is her sailor uniform now grown out of (AKA dead), the story is coming to its conclusion. Overall, it is overwhelming, and also probably only one of the only times in your life that you're sad over a talking shirt. Also, Senketsu knows it's super cute.

  • (#11) Rem From 'Trigun'

Last Words: "Take care of Knives."

Rem's last words as Project Seed goes haywire and she sends Vash and Knives shooting off into space are ones of unparalleled selflessness. By that point in the narrative, the viewer knows Knives had a major part in the perishing of everyone on board.

Vash, losing someone who treated him and Knives as a mother, is a devastated, crying mess.

  • Goku From Dragon Ball Z on Random Famous Anime Last Words That Will Make You Cry Like A Baby

(#12) Goku From Dragon Ball Z

Last Words: "You put up a good fight, Gohan. I'm proud of you. Take care of your mother for me, she needs you. Tell her that I had to do this, Gohan. Goodbye, my son."

Goku dies twice in Dragon Ball Z, but the second time is far and away the most emotionally impactful. His last words are directed to his son Gohan after sacrificing himself to Cell.

Combined with Gohan's reaction, and the fact that Goku's second passing was thought to be permanent, Goku's last words are emotionally shattering.

  • (#13) Wizardmon From 'Digimon Adventure'

Last Words: "Don't be sorry. I don't have any regrets. If I hadn't met you, my life would have had no meaning. I'm glad you and I were friends. Thank you for everything, Gatomon."

Wizardmon is a truly tragic figure in the Digimon Adventure anime. He serves as a double agent in Myotismon's army, but his true loyalty is always to Gatomon. See, Gatomon saved his life when he was on the brink, collapsed out of exhaustion. From that point on, the two share an unbreakable bond.

He eventually repays his life debt to Gatomon when he sacrifices himself to save her from the evil Myotismon's attack. His parting words are both haunting and inspiring, as they spur Gatoman's digivolution to Angewomon. Although his death is avenged, the holes he left in the hearts of children everywhere will never really be filled.

  • (#14) Sayaka Miki

    • Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Last Words: "I'm such an idiot."

Sayaka Miki has a seriously sad story, and her final words are so full of remorse and self-loathing that it delivers a knockout punch straight to your feels. His last words before she transforms into a full-fledged witch and dissipates from her form as a magical girl translates to "I'm such an idiot."

The poor thing! The girl goes through the whole show feeling heartbroken and inferior, and, eventually, that heartbreak drives her to the point of such sadness that her friends literally have to end her life.

  • (#15) Kaworu Nagisa

    • Neon Genesis Evangelion, The End of Evangelion, Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo

Last Words: "Thank you, my life was meaningful because of you."

In Neon Genesis Evangelion, Kaworu is an emotional hurricane. An Angel and the most openly caring character throughout the entire messed-up series, he openly bonds with Shinji, easily the most misanthropic person on the show. His empathy makes it easy to get super close to Kaworu very quickly.

Then a bunch of horrible stuff happens and he ends up basically getting the life squeezed out of him. His departing words to humanity are the perfect emotional send-off for the character.

  • (#16) Jinno From 'Afro Samurai'

Last Words: "What about us? What about us? I... treated you as my brother... I will never forgive you."

In the penultimate battle of Afro Samurai, the titular Afro is forced to duel his foster brother, Jinno. Jinno is consumed entirely by his desire to seek vengeance on Afro, whom he blames for the death of their foster father/sensei. Their fight is imbued with an emotion unseen in the rest of the series, as their memories and history weave seamlessly into the gorgeous combat choreography.

Jinno's final words are insanely poignant. Even the usually stoic Afro is visibly affected, as he reflects on his relationship with Jinno before he strikes the final blow. While Jinno is resurrected later in the series, the impact of his final words on Afro reverberate throughout the rest of the anime.

About This Tool

“until all are one. ” That’s the charm of a leader, Optimus Prime, a leader, a good Autobot soldier, a hero. In the minds of his children, he was a father figure; brave, fearless, always leading the charge against the Decepticons, tolerant of everyone, violent when he had to be, with the radiance of a leader. The passing of such a great man is, I believe, unacceptable to anyone.
