Gon Freecss is a friendly, adventurous boy who is level-headed, confident, and happy most of the time. However, he has a hair-trigger temper and can become enraged when the people he cares about are in danger. For example, when Neferpitou's actions lead to Kite's demise, Gon is utterly unforgiving, transforming into an older version of himself with enough power to beat Neferpitou into an unrecognizable pulp. Gon can be a sweetheart, but when things get serious, he can be remarkably cold and even cruel.

- The Seven Deadly Sins
On the outside, Meliodas is a calm, funloving person who loves telling jokes and generally having a good time. But if anybody lays a finger on any of his friends - especially Elizabeth - he instantly goes into Berserker-mode. Unlike some characters on this list, Meliodas' rage was actually a dominant trait for much of his life - in the past he was a terrifying demon known for his extreme cruelty. Nowadays, he's trying to be a lot more low-key, but that's not always easy to do when you're literally the Sin of Wrath.

When Kakashi was a kid, he was a super serious person who was hardened by his traumatic experiences as a child soldier. He had little patience for nonsense, especially when it came from his more boisterous teammate, Obito. He was fully dedicated to his obligations as a ninja, and had no time for anything else.
As an adult, Kakashi has calmed down a lot. In fact, most of the time he's an amicable, friendly dude who can sometimes be found reading mildly salacious books for fun. But his cheerful nature instantly flies out the window when he's facing down an enemy ninja. His formerly serious personality comes out, and he uses anything from his Chidori attack to his mangekyo sharingan to do his duty as a ninja.

(#4) Saitama
Saitama is just about the most OP character in the anime universe - as long as he can land a hit, he can knock out any opponent with a single punch. While it does take some work for him to maintain that strength, he doesn't let all that power go to his head. Actually, he's a totally laid back dude who spends most of his time chilling out at home playing video games or collecting coupons to lower his grocery bill.
But when actual danger comes calling, he slides seamlessly into superhero mode, and knocks his enemies into the stratosphere.

(#5) Nezuko Kamado - 'Demon Slayer'
Nezuko Kamado is one of the most adorable anime characters to appear in recent years, and part of that is because of her oddly blissed out nature. Already a calm, sweet person prior to her demonic transformation, she somehow manages to retain her kind personality - with a few added quirks, of course. However, if anybody threatens her brother Tanjiro, the demon claws come out.

(#6) Shota Aizawa - 'My Hero Academia'
Would you expect that a guy who wears sweatpants to work, doesn't groom himself, and takes naps when he's supposed to be teaching how to be a stalwart hero? Probably not, but that's what Shota Aizawa, the homeroom teacher of Class 1-A brings to the table.
Most of the time, he's chill to the point where others consider him unprofessional, but he'll throw away the sleeping bag and fight with everything he has to protect his beloved students from villainous attacks.

Monkey D. Luffy is a member of the Straw Hat pirates, and if you only saw him hanging out with the rest of the crew, you'd probably think he was a cheerful idiot who would be useless in a serious situation. But while he spends his free time getting way too enthusiastic about hermit crabs, he's a reliable and powerful fighter whenever there's a conflict. He isn't oblivious to the hardships of pirating, he just prefers that everyone focus on the positive and try to live their best lives so that they're fully prepared to face danger when it happens.

Okay, so Roy Mustang does get into yelling matches with Edward Elric on the regular, but aside from being a little bit temperamental when it comes to the teenage alchemist, he's actually a pretty easy-going guy.
But when faced with a real conflict, he drops his flirtatious jokester persona and gets serious. He will not hesitate to burn his enemies to a crisp if there's no peaceful way to diffuse a situation. Good thing, too, otherwise he likely would have been destroyed by a homunculus midway through the series.

Kenshin Himura is just about the most mellow, happy, peaceful guy in the world - that is, as long as none of his loved ones are in danger. Once known for being one of the most brutal mercenaries in history, he has since vowed to dedicate his life to non-violence. He even carries a reverse-blade sword so make it that much harder for him to take another person's life.
None of this means that he'll keep smiling and being friendly when someone threatens his hard-won peace. Kenshin might be a pacifist, but he'll still draw his sword when he has to. The hitokiri battosai is still alive inside of him.

(#10) Mob Kageyama - 'Mob Psycho 100'
Shigeo Kageyama, commonly known by his nickname Mob, is pretty much the definition of this trope.
Mob literally has a percentage counter that ticks higher the more frustrated or upset he becomes. As his emotions sour, his power rises, and when the counter gets to 100%, he unleashes the brunt of his psychic abilities. However, if Mob isn't facing off against a powerful enemy or experiencing some form of trauma, he's a sweet, gentle boy who spends his free time trying to get in shape with the help his friends from school.

When Yato is first introduced, it's hard to imagine that he was ever anything other than the cheerful, eccentric person he appears to be. Yato's life as a minor god is currently devoted to doing odd jobs at 5 yen a pop in the hopes of eventually raising enough money - and gaining enough followers - to build himself a shrine. Aside from that, he spends his time fighting off ayakashi - spirits that threaten the safety of humans and gods alike.
Though his partners Hiyori and Yukine find his laid back behavior to be jarring at times, they ultimately respect him because he gets serious when the situation calls for it, always springing into action to protect those in need.

(#12) Vash the Stampede
Vash's personality is full of contradictions. In his everyday life, he goes out of his way to make other poeple feel comfortable. Often, this means exaggerating his sillier personality traits - flirting with women, and getting excited about delicious donuts. That personality disappears into oblivion the instant he or anyone else is threatened with danger. No longer silly or cheerful, he displays intense focus and precision. This is important for Vash, because while he is unusually strong, he is also committed to avoid taking lives under any circumstances - a feat that requires some serious focus and attention.

(#13) Rimuru Tempest - 'That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime'
For somebody who lost his life to a brutal stabbing and was reincarnated as a slime monster, Rimuru Tempest is alarmingly chill. Under those circumstances, many people would never stop screaming, but Rimuru takes it in stride. He's cheerful and welcoming to just about everyone, and rarely gets more than mildly annoyed with anybody no matter how much they insult him.
Chill vibes or not, though, Rimuru will throw hands when his growing community is threatened. The coolest thing about Rimuru, though, is that once he's defeated his enemies, he does his level best to see their humanity, and often incorporates them into his large group of allies.

- Gintama, Gin Tama, Gintama: The Movie
Most of the time, former samurai Gintoki Sakata is either loafing around doing nothing or taking on odd jobs for his business, the Yorozuya. He's a lazy dude with a wicked sense of humor, and while he does occasionally snap at people he's annoyed with, he's generally pretty nice.
All that changes when he's faced with someone who actually threatens his or his loved ones' safety. Gintoki is actually a war veteran, so he has a lot of experience with fighting powerful enemies - some of whom are actually his former allies. He doesn't play around when it comes to keeping other people safe, even if the only thing he has to defend himself is a wooden sword and years of training.

(#15) Chise Hatori - 'The Ancient Magus' Bride'
If Chise Hatori had a choice, she'd spend her whole life hanging out at home learning magic. She's healing from a tumultuous and traumatic past, and really just wants to live in peace with her loved ones. However, her placid attitude disappears the instant she discovers that someone else might be in danger. In fact, she's usually willing to risk her life if it means protecting others, whether that's engaging in battle against dangerous foes or literally taking on a curse.
Her tendency to go overboard when it comes to helping others is one of her greatest faults according to both Elias Ainsworth and Ruth - who are equally adamant about protecting her.
